• On July 2, 1828, the Peruvian corvette Libertad, armed with 24 guns and a crew of

124 men under the command of Captain Carlos García del Postigo, sailed to northern
Peru to monitor the movement of the estuary of Guayaquil.

• On August 31, 1828, the Peruvian corvette was intercepted by two Grancolombian
warships, the Guayaquileña schooner and the Pichincha corvette, under the
command of the Irish-born ship captain Thomas C. Wright.

• The Peruvian corvette, before the intentions of the Gran-Colombian ships, opened
fire, beginning a combat in enclosed spaces, during which the Peruvians almost
boarded the Guayaquileña, meanwhile, the Pichincha corvette stayed away and did
not participate in the combat.

• At the height of the battle, Grancolombian ships began to flee to Guayaquil and were
closely persecuted for Freedom. The persecution ceased when Libertad had to go to
Paita so that the wounded of her crew would be treated and the dead buried. The
Peruvians lost 15 men and 28 were injured, while the Gran Colombians had 24 dead
and 36 injured.
