Simple method of thermoelectric cooler (Peltier device) parameters determination
based on datasheet and modeling results.
Version 2.
2017, Kubov V.I., Dymytrov Y.Y.
To determine parameters of ThermoElectric Cooler – TEC, you will need to follow this 8 step simple
procedure.
1. Take the maximum output voltage - Vopt from the graph in the datasheet.
As an example, take the parameters of the device TEC1-12706.
http://www.thermonamic.com/TEC1-12706-English.PDF

Fig.1. Standard Performance Graph V= f(ΔT). Th=27ºC.

On fig.1 example, it`s 16 V for the temperature of hot side Th=27ºC.
Vopt {V}
2. Calculate the Seebeck coefficient from Se  . For the example on fig.1
Th{  K }

16
Se   53mV / K .
27  273
3. Determine the maximum performance for zero temperature difference Qcold. For the example in
fig.1, it is 61W.
2
Vopt
4. Calculate electrical resistance from R 0  . For the example in fig.1:
2  Q cold
2
Vopt 16 2
R0    2.1 . The datasheet indicates2.0Ω.
2  Q cold 2  61
5. Determine the maximum temperature difference between the cold and hot sides DTmax - the
temperature, at which the thermal performance turns to 0. According to the graph in Fig.1, this is
70°C. The datasheet indicates 70°C
6. Determine the Quality-factor - the ratio of the thermal to the electrical resistance – X=Rq/R0, for the
known maximum temperature difference dT=Thot - Tcold according to the equation:
Rq dT
 2
 1  dT / Thot 
R0 2 2
Vopt
In considered example Vopt=16V and Thot - Tcold=70°C, and Thot=300°K.
Rq 70
 2  0.93 .
16  1  70 / 300
R0 2 2

7. Calculate value of thermal resistance Rq=R0∙X..

Obtain the value Rq=2.1∙0.93=1.95°K/W.
Thus, we have set of parameters for the model of Peltier device TEC1-12706:
 Seebeck coefficient 53mV/°K.
 Electrical resistance 2.1Ω.
 Thermal resistance 1.95°K/W.
Rq
8. In case you need classical Quality-factor Z   Se 2 , or dimensionless factor Z  T - recalculate it.
R0

In considered example Z  0.93  53  10

3
 
2
 2.6  10 3 / K , and
Z  T  2.6 10 3  300  300  70  / 2  0.69
T - is the average temperature between the hot and cold surfaces.
