Water chlorination is the process of adding chlorine or hypochlorite to water.

This method is used to kill

certain bacteria and other microbes in tap water as chlorine is highly toxic. In particular, chlorination is
used to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, typhoid etc.

The dosing/chlorinating unit is meant to dose a chemical into water. The chemicals can be chlorine for
fresh water systems, corrosion inhibitors for main engine cooling water, pH adjustment of fresh water
etc.

The unit consists of a dosing pump, a control cabinet, an injection valve and a container for the
chemical. The container is equipped with a low-level alarm which stops the pump in case chemical runs
out, a suction valve and a manual agitator. All components are mounted on a stable steel frame for easy
installation.

The most common application is that the dosing unit is being used to pre-chlorinate or pH-adjust fresh
water, pre-chlorinate evaporated water or bunker water, on its way to fresh water holding tank, and to
re-chlorinate water before it is distributed. The pre-chlorination systems are normally controlled by flow
meters in bunker water flow line and evaporated water flow line respectively. This ensures enough
chlorine dosed into the actual water flow in the water line proportionately.
The following features at plant need improvement for cost effective and best operational practices.

1. Chlorination through a dosing system including dosing pumps, tank and controls.
2. Chlorination in the night time or after sunset to improve its effectiveness.
3. Chlorine stock to be maintained.
4. Supply of bulk chlorine direct from manufacturer.
5. Less manpower
6. Keep environment neat & clean

A scheme is prepared to evaluate the above points and get benefits.

1. Bulk storage to be prepared instead of keeping chlorine solution in cans.

2. OR A bowser of chlorine solution to be supplied by the manufacturer or supplier, available all
the time at plant. It may be replaced/ exchanged with next delivery of chlorine solution.
3. From storage or bowser, solution to be transferred at chemical dosing tank at Cooling tower
through a pump having flow 500~1000 liter/ Hour (approx.) It will save time and manpower
used for transfer of solution from cans to dosing tank.
4. The chlorine dosing to be started from chemical dosing system till the level maintained. The
dosing such is adjusted by time control or flow/ make-up control. It will control excessive dosing,
if any and wastage during transfer from cans.
5. The fumes of the chlorine gas will controlled through use of pumps. The environment will be
cleaner and odor free. The problem of keeping cans will be resolved; space will be available for
other activities.
