SUMMARY OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROJECTS

“Development of Data Aggregation Protocols for Under the Guidance of: Dr. Debashis Saha
Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks” MIS and Computer Science Group.
Project Status- Completed (March 2007) Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata
Several data dissemination protocols exist for static sensor networks, namely SPIN, LEACH,
CLUDDA, PEGASIS etc. But not one such protocol exists for mobile wireless sensor networks
(MWSNs). We have proposed a new protocol to address node mobility in SPIN. It is a 3-way
handshaking protocol, where message is sent to a requesting node on explicit request after the node that
has the data advertises to all other nodes. Nodes move following the random way-point mobility model.
Aim is to keep up the percentage of success and lower the percentage of futile data messages sent. An
efficient trade off has been reached between the two with two different versions of the protocol.
MOBSPIN, the deterministic one attaches more importance to better percentage of success whereas the
probabilistic version An extension of the work, EMOBSPIN attaches more importance to reducing the
energy cost of sending redundant and futile data. Simulations in C & NS2 provided support to the
theoretical results. (Reports- Publication 1 & 2 in Resume)

“Analysis of textual and map based GIS services Under the Guidance of: Dr. Pradip K. Das
using GPRS and Wi-Fi networks” Department of Computer Science & Engineering,
Project Status- In progress Jadavpur University, Kolkata
In a team, I worked in developing a centralized GIS tool having a server-client architecture for exchange
of geographical information between a centralized server and mobile user (PDA, iPaqs, phones). Analysis
was done in two phases. Database of spatial information is located in IBM Regatta server in Jadavpur
University and appropriate servlets were deployed in Tomcat server for query interpretation, data
extraction and transmission of data to the client. Inforrnation can be received in form of text or graphical
maps depending on bandwidth of connection used. Extensive testing has been done using GPRS network.
(Report- Publication 4 in Resume) This phase is over. In the second phase we are working on
improvements on the GIS tool:- testing feasibility of creating a reflective middleware based approach to
decentralize the centralized GIS system thus developed and we are trying to carry out some small scale
testing using 2-3 laptops.

“A Lifetime Maximization Algorithm that Under the Guidance of: Dr. Debashis Saha
minimizes data loss in Wireless Sensor Networks” MIS and Computer Science Group.
Project Status – Completed (September 2007) Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata
Standard sleep synchronization algorithms for wireless sensor networks involve one active and one
sleep state to address energy efficiency. Assuming that the network is composed of a matrix of square
grids, the energy cost of one node remaining active can be further reduced by sending it to doze state,
an idle listening mode. In this state node only listens for data and doesn’t process or forward them.
Data arrived is just received and buffered. After a specific time interval to doze is over the node goes to
active state and processes the buffered data. Then it returns back to doze state if no alert beacon is
detected. An extension of the work involved increasing the delay tolerance of the network further by
changes in the SDC protocol. Mathematical analyses and simulations have been undertaken to find an
optimal buffer size for this protocol, duty cycle of the network being optimized. Energy consumption
has been found to be reduced for this optimal buffer size and percentage of sensor nodes surviving after
a fixed time interval increased over standard previous lifetime maximization protocols. (Reports -
Publications 3 & 5 in my resume)

“Analysis of Handoff Algorithms for Cellular Under the Guidance of: Dr. Nabanita Das
Networks” Advanced Computing & Microelectronics Unit.
Project Status: Completed (April 2007) Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.
Cellular network architecture is composed of hexagonal cells with an omnidirectional antenna at its
centre. Base station handoff and frequency handoffs occur on leaving the hexagonal cell boundaries. A
new idea was proposed to improve the bandwidth utilization, optimize the number of handoffs and
reduce the call-dropping probability. This idea involved using a new cell structure with a hexagonal
cell having three omnidirectional antennae at three alternate vertices. Our simulations in Java under
Linux environment showed that call dropping probability was reduced for the same number of handoffs
as in the previous case and bandwidth utilization increased. (Report- Submitted to guide)

“ Improvement of network lifetime in sensor Under the Guidance of: Dr. Nabanita Das
networks” Advanced Computing & Microelectronics Unit.
Project status:- In progress Indian Statistical Institute (ISI),Kolkata.
Presently, in a second project at ISI, I am working in a team to develop a new grid building approach for a
dynamic topology control algorithm in wireless sensor networks which would improve network lifetime
over existing protocols.

“RFC compliance over IPv6 and TCP/IP stack Under: UNIX Networking group Hewlett
enhancements” Packard India, R&D wing, Bangalore.
Project Status: In progress Project Manager :- S. Shanmuganathan
Since the emergence of the computer network engineering, the protocols and characteristics defined in
every Internet protocol has been documented in memoranda called Request for Comments (RFC). The
Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) adopts some of the proposals published in RFCs as Internet
standards. Hewlett Packard has recently designed the RFCs 3041, 3810, 3678, 3376 for the IPv6
protocol stack. For my final semester project, I am currently working under HP India, on
implementations of the standards defined in these RFCs using socket programming in UNIX
networking environment. The final output obtained will check compliance of these RFCs in the TCP/IP
stack.
