BULACAN GRAND COCKPIT ARENA

BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT

A cockfight is a blood sport between two cocks, or gamecocks, held in a ring called a cockpit. The
history of raising fowl for fighting goes back 6,000 years.
The combatants, referred to as gamecocks (not to be confused with game birds), are
specially bred and conditioned for increased stamina and strength. Male and female chickens of such
a breed are referred to as game fowl.
In the Philippines, Cockfighting, locally termed Sabong, is a popular pastime, where both illegal
and legal cockfights occur. Legal cockfights are held in cockpits every week, whilst illegal ones,
called tupada or tigbakay, are held in secluded cockpits where authorities cannot raid them. The country
has hosted several World Slasher Cup derbies, held biannually at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Quezon
City, where the world's leading game fowl breeders gather. World Slasher Cup is also known as the
"Olympics of Cockfighting". The World Gamefowl Expo 2014 was held in the World Trade Center Metro
Manila.
Cockfighting was already flourishing in pre-colonial Philippines, as recorded by Antonio Pigafetta,
the Italian diarist aboard Ferdinand Magellan’s 1521 expedition. Cockfighting in the Philippines is derived
from the fact that it shares elements of Indian and other Southeast Asian cultures, where the jungle fowl
(bankivoid) and Oriental type of chicken are endemic.

MAIN PROBLEM

Cockfight is a trend most especially in the province of Bulacan where most of its cities legalized
cockfighting which also becomes as source of income of many. Despite this trend, many places in Bulacan
still held illegal cockfights mainly because their city and government does not allow cockfighting so they
tend to do tupada. Legal or illegal cockfights however, that are held mostly in different places all over
Bulacan where regular cockfights and the derbies were held weekly aren’t suitable or are poorly designed
for their location and needs which causes conflicts to the neighboring residentials.

SUB PROBLEMS

The following are the sub-problems associated with the study:

• The location where the cockpit arena that is secluded away from residential areas.
• Legalization of the native sport in the location.
• Poor design of the site that causes illegal parking and other code issues.
• Intimidation of those living nearby.
• Accessibility to the arena of the cockers from Bulacan and the dayo.
GOAL OF THE THESIS

Cockfight is one of the Filipinos traditional games played whether for the reasons of entertaiment,
leisure and money or income. The goal of this study is to develop a cockpit arena which will be the main
arena for holding cockfights all over Bulacan which is also open for the dayo who also wants to compete.
Bulacan Cockpit Arena will be the main gathering of all cockers from its covering vicinities and more. It
will be designed appropriated to its use and located to a place away from residentials where it is suitable
with a wide space that is designed not to offend the code issues. The Bulacan Cockpit Arena aims to
provide arena to whom wants to hold a fight legally.

OBJECTIVES OF THE THESIS

With the primary goal being stated, specific objectives shall be likewise enumerated which
includes the following:

• To design a cockpit arena accessible although out Bulacan.

• To provide well designed space that considered the neighboring areas where there will be
no intimidation.
• To design an arena that is in a wide spacious area that could accommodate the expected
cockers and its vehicles.
• To provide a well-designed arena for the cockers with the right spaces, materials, safety
and comfort.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The proposed project entitled Bulacan Cockpit Arena is a type of commercial building where the
game called cockfight happens which aims to provide an arena that will serve as the major and grand
location for the cockers in holding derbies and cockfights. The project shall site the necessary and relevant
data and informations abiding the rules of the government and its city ordinances.

This architectural study will address social and environmental factors through surveying the location
and site which the arena will stand, designing it considering the natural features in the vicinity which will
include architectural drawings, engineering plans and drawings, design specifications, utility plans and
detailed drawings, planning of the building process and other necessary and relevant documents needed
upon the construction.

Since the span of time given to conduct the research and study is only limited for barely a year, factors
like socio-economic, market, income generation, and financial studies would be limited to abstract or
conceptual presentations. Moreover, the technical working drawings shall have an output associated with
utility system concepts such as structural, electrical, mechanical, sanitary and plumbing, and security and
safety.

HIGH RISE WOODEN MIXED-USE BUILDING BLOCK

BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT

Worldwide, buildings produce about 40 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions. While net-zero
energy buildings and retrofits can improve those numbers, the construction industry —and, specifically,
the materials it uses—has an intrinsic role to play. Recently the top-ranked architecture and engineering
firm in the U.S., Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) and researchers from Oregon State
University (OSU), launched a research project investigating the performance characteristics of a hybrid
wood and concrete structural floor system that may offer owners, developers, architects and builders with
a traditional flat plate construction alternative.

Their latest test examines how cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor systems, when using a
composite concrete topping slab, improves structural, acoustic, and fire performance. Popularized in
Europe and gradually gaining attention in the rest of the world, Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) stands out
for its strength, appearance, versatility, and sustainability. The material consists of planks (or lamellas) of
sawn, glued, and layered wood, where each layer is oriented perpendicular to the previous. By joining
layers of wood at perpendicular angles, structural rigidity for the panel is obtained in both directions,
similar to plywood but with thicker components. In this way, the panel has great tensile and compressive
strength.

Although the cost of the material is high, factors such as shorter construction time, greater
quality control, and cleaning can be considered when making your choice. Another issue is cultural.
However, considering that the construction industry still relies heavily on non-renewable resources,
Laminated Cross Timber can be an excellent choice for building material.

MAIN PROBLEM

Timber is a type of wood which has been processed into beams and planks. It is also known as
“lumber” in US and Canada. Timber is one of the types of woods abundant in the Philippines and is very
well use in construction where it is only used on small construction. This is a challenge to exceed the
expectation of people on the potentials of timber in a large scale. The project will be built out of cross-
laminated timber (CLT) from its floors to its walls and other of its structural members. This study is a
process of innovation and possibilities in building and construction.

SUB PROBLEMS

The following are the sub-problems associated with the study:

• Ideal location of the building considering physical, environmental and social status and
aspects of the vicinity.
• Availability of sources of cross-laminated timber and other materials needed.
• Construction process, cure, techniques and technology which solves latter issues on
materials and withstand natural calamities
• Alternative materials, techniques or technologies needed to make the building more
ecofriendly.
GOAL OF THE THESIS

Woods has been widely used altroughout these years in construction. Early sturctures and
building in the ancient times were almost built using woods which proves the strength and flexibility of
wood. The goal of this study is to exceed peoples expectation to the potentials and limitations of wood in
construction. This study promotes an ecofriendly design and and construction process which helps
decrease the emition of carbon dioxide. The structure will be a new face of a broad and complex
structures in the latter. The study will also open new posibilities in building construction in the Philippines
and will be the first ever high rise building to be built out from wood (timber).

OBJECTIVES OF THE THESIS

With the primary goal being stated, specific objectives shall be likewise enumerated which
includes the following:

• To provide a sustainable and resilient design that defies time and nature’s catastrophes.
• To unleash and introduce potentials of using woods in constructing complex buildings.
• To design a building where the residents could walk through their residence 24/7, and
shop and go to café or restaurant without riding on their car.
• To build an ecofriendly structure which defines beauty and resiliency at the same time.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The proposed project entitled High Rise Wooden Mixed-Use Apartment Block is a type of mixed-
use commercial building where people gather, meet and interact with each other and the environment. This
is a building where people stay, relax and live. The project shall site the necessary and relevant data and
informations abiding the rules of the government and its city ordinances.

This architectural study will address social and environmental factors through surveying the location
and site which the arena will stand, designing it considering the natural features in the vicinity which will
include architectural drawings, engineering plans and drawings, design specifications, utility plans and
detailed drawings, planning of the building process and other necessary and relevant documents needed
upon the construction.

like socio-economic, market, income generation, and financial studies would be limited to abstract or

DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS
AND
PHILIPPINE NATIONAL SPORTS UNIVERSITY
BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT

Last 12th of Julu 2019, Sen. Emmanuel D. Pacquiao submitted a sSenate Bill No. 192- AN ACT
CREATING THE DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS, DEFINING ITS POWERS AND FUNCTIONS, APPROPRIATING
FUNDS THEREFOR, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES, commending to have a Department of Sports in the
Philippines. On the explanatory note of the bill it says, “... The Philippines is home to budding athletes.
Through the years, countless athletes of talent and determination have been produced and have shown
world-class talent. However, there is still room for improvement in terms of the country’s sports
development.

…This measure seeks for the creation of the Department of Sports that shall be the authorizing
body in sports and grassroots development. The said department will take hold in developing Filipino
athletes to become their best version with adequate support from the government...”

Another bill passed on senate under Senate Bill No. 732 passed by Sen. Sherwin T. Gatchalian
was- AN ACT ESTABLISHING A PH ILIPPIN E HIGH SCHOOL FOR SPORTS AND APPROPRIATING FUNDS
THEREFOR. On the explanatory note it says, “The Philippines has a pool of talented youth who have great
potential in the field of sports. However, due to financial constraints, these talented youth are unable to
fulfill their dreams of bringing home the gold for our country. Our country is home to world champions in
boxing, bowling, and swimming, among others.

…However, to be able to realize and maximize the full potential of these athletes, there is a need
to provide them the appropriate support and assistance through the establishment of a Philippine High
School for Sports. At present, there are no opportunities to obtain quality education with emphasis on
sports development.

…It is also with the establishment of this high school for sports that we can finally get a gold
medal in the Olympics as our talented athletes will not just be adequately trained but more importantly,
developed and prepared for international sporting events.”

However, in this study, both the Department od Sports and the school for sports will be planned
and designed at same location for the purpose of connectivity and support of the department to the
trainees and students. Rather than a high school, a national university will be designed in the project.

MAIN PROBLEM

Athletes requires a lot of considerations for their trainings, exercises and conditioning, from the
spaces they need to even their thermal comfort while exerting their strength in trainings. The study
requires full understanding of different aspects and considerations in designing a department especially
the university where the students train and the potential programs that could improve or deteriorate
their physical fitness and/or harness their talents more as an athlete and trainers.

SUB PROBLEMS

The following are the sub-problems associated with the study which needs absolute
understanding and solutions:
• Site where the department and university will be located that is wide enough to fit all the
necessary spaces of different sports offered.
• Accessibility of the department to the university.
• Distribution of spaces in the university where students could focus in accordance to the
respective sports.
• Measurements of different fields, courts, pools and other medium where the students
train.
• Number of offices needed and spaces necessary for the department.

GOAL OF THE THESIS

This study aims to provide the Philippines its very own Department of Sports and National Sports
University which caters and gives importnace to sports in the Philippines and to the people who desires to
make the country known in the field of sports. In providing this project, the aim is not only to enhance
the abilities of the students or athlete but also to strive for the World Olympics where our own Filipino
athletes participate and strive to bring home the gold medals from different fields of sports. This will also
be a new way to introduce the other sports that we don’t have and offer to the athletes.

OBJECTIVES OF THE THESIS

With the primary goal being stated, specific objectives shall be likewise enumerated which
includes the following:

• To provide a department and its needed offices to facilitate the sports field in the
Philippines and support
• To provide facilities and programs needed by each field of sport offered which helps the
athletes improve their skills and discipline.
• To design buildings and structure appropriate and speaks to its relevance and use.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The proposed project entitled Department of Sports and Philippine National Sports University are
types of government and institutional facilities. Department where people work and a sport university where
students train their respective sports. Both structures are for people and where people interact with each
other and interact with the space. The university building is where athletes train, stay, and live. The project
shall site the necessary and relevant data and informations abiding the rules of the government and its city
ordinances.

Since the span of time given to conduct the research and study is only limited for barely a year,
factors like socio-economic, market, income generation, and financial studies would be limited to abstract
or conceptual presentations. Moreover, the technical working drawings shall have an output associated
with utility system concepts such as structural, electrical, mechanical, sanitary and plumbing, and security
and safety.
