What Is Marketing?
What does the term marketing mean to you? Many people think it means the same as
personal selling. Others think marketing is the same as personal selling and advertising. Still
others believe marketing has something to do with making products available in stores,
arranging displays, and maintaining inventories of products for future sales. Actually, marketing
includes all of these activities and more.
Marketing has two facets. First, it is a philosophy, an attitude, a perspective, or a
management orientation that stresses customer satisfaction. Second, marketing is activities
and processes used to implement this philosophy.
The American Marketing Association's definition of marketing focuses on the second
facet. Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating,
delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and
society at large.
Marketing involves more than just activities performed by a group of people in a
defined area or department. In the often-quoted words of David Packard, co-founder of
Hewlett-Packard, "marketing is too important to be left only to the marketing department."
Marketing entails processes that focus on delivering value and benefits to customers, not just
selling goods, services, and/or ideas. It uses communication, distribution, and pricing strategies
to provide customers and other stakeholders with the goods, services, ideas, values, and
benefits they desire when and where they want them. It involves building long-term, mutually
rewarding relationships when these benefit all parties concerned. Marketing also entails an
understanding that organizations have many connected stakeholder “partners," including
employees, suppliers, stockholders, distributors, and society at large.
Research shows that a company’s ability to motivate its employees translates directly to
customer satisfaction and thus to the bottom line. At The Container Store, sales
representatives receive 24 hours of training compared to an industry average of eight hours,
The company offers health care coverage to part-time workers, and arranges schedules to
allow parents to drop off and pick up their children. The Container Store has experienced 15
percent to 20 percent annual sales growth since its founding, due in part to putting employees
before customers. The motto of Wegmans Food Markets, the Rochester-based grocery chain
ranked by Fortune magazine as the best company to work for in America, states, “Employees
first, customers second." The rationale is that if employees are happy, customers will be too.
One desired outcome of marketing is an exchange; people giving up something to
receive something they would rather have. Normally, we think of money as the medium of
exchange. We “give up” money to “get" the goods and services we want. Exchange does not
require money, however. Two persons may barter or trade such items as baseball cards or oil
paintings.

Nissan LEAF Passes 400,000 Mark, Company Targets Electrification For

Asian Markets
The Nissan LEAF is the best-selling battery electric car of all time. Its record may
not stand long if Elon Musk and Tesla have their way, but for now Nissan is the EV king
with over 400,000 LEAFs sold since the car was first introduced in 2010. Now the
company is planning to introduce the LEAF and various models powered with its e-Power
hybrid powertrain to more countries, especially in Southeast Asia and Oceania.
“This milestone is a powerful statement that 400,000 customers, and counting,
value the Nissan LEAF for the excitement, confidence and connection it delivers,” said
Executive Vice President Daniele Schillaci, Nissan’s global head of marketing, sales and
electric vehicles. “The LEAF remains the icon of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, our strategy
for moving more people to a better world.”
LEAF owners have driven more than 10 billion kilometers in all. Today all those
electric cars save 3.8 million barrels of oil a year, not to mention the millions of tons of
carbon dioxide that haven’t entered the atmosphere in all that time.
Last year, the LEAF was not only the best-selling electric vehicle in Europe, but
also the top-selling car of any kind in Norway. It is available in more than 50 markets
globally. That number is about to rise. It will go on sale in six new markets in Latin
America in the first half of 2019 and seven new markets in Asia and Oceania by the end
of the year. It will be offered in the Philippines and Indonesia in early 2020.
Nissan‘s goal is to electrify a quarter of its sales volume in Asia and Oceania by
2022. In addition to the Leaf, a number of models with the e-Power drive will make up a
part of this plan. “e-Power we believe is the most pragmatic step towards electrification,”
said Yutaka Sanada, Nissan regional senior vice president and head of Asia & Oceania.
“In addition to introducing electrified mobility, Nissan is working on making them more
accessible through electrification components assembly and localization in key
Southeast Asian markets.”
The e-Power is a series hybrid similar to a Toyota Prius but not so similar that
Nissan has to pay royalties to Toyota. It is by far the best selling option for Nissan
vehicles in the Japanese home market. The LEAF is currently manufactured in Japan,
Tennessee, and the UK.

Christmas Shopping, the Rise in Spending

Christmas is generally a top-selling season for retailers in many countries around

the world. Because it is a season where people buy gifts, decorations, and supplies to
celebrate, sales escalate rapidly. In the U.S., the "Christmas shopping season" starts as
early as October. In Canada, merchants begin advertising campaigns just before
Halloween (October 31) and step up their marketing following Remembrance Day on
November 11. In the UK and Ireland, the Christmas shopping season starts from
mid-November, around the time when high street Christmas lights are turned on.
In most Western nations, Christmas Day is the least active day of the year for
business and commerce; almost all retail, commercial and institutional businesses are
closed, and almost all industries cease activity (more than any other day of the year),
whether laws require such or not. In England and Wales, the Christmas Day (Trading) Act
2004 prevents all large shops from trading on Christmas Day. Scotland is currently
planning similar legislation.
Recently, many people have started protesting against the Christmas season
consumerism. For example, Buy Nothing Christmas is an ongoing protest and reaction to
the commercialization of the North American Christmas season. Contemporarily a
movement was created to extend Adbusters magazine's Buy Nothing Day into the entire
Christmas season. The idea advocated by this movement is that buying something never
makes one happy. It is our human connections that are essential for our happiness. At a
critical moment in human history when global warming is causing so much harm, this
movement claims that it is wiser to ignore the advertisements that incite us to buy more,
to buy things we do not really need.

Tips to start the new school year

If you change your school, you need to learn how to find your way from your home
to the new school. Start building new relationships in your new school environment. It will
be easy for you to make new friends if you are willing to. Your new friends will certainly
show you the places around the school. Your new teachers will also be happy to
introduce you to your classmates.
If you feel anxious of the new school year, it is very important to talk to your
parents about your fears. They will surely find a way to help you get over your fears and
gain confidence. They will certainly show you that they believe in your abilities, and will
be willing to help you with your first pieces of homework if need be. It is also essential
that you develop self-confidence and believe in your own potential.
If you are overly anxious about performance, work through your negative beliefs,
especially the beliefs about the implications of school failure. Challenge your negative
thoughts that your worth as a person or future prospects hinge entirely on your grades.
Good performance will be achieved only when you beat your fears and discover your
own personal worth.
Enjoy setting goals for yourself, so you can transcend your weaknesses and reach
your full potential. Your study goals must be realistic and achievable. For example, start
with small steps to reach higher targets.
Achieving some goals will certainly motivate you to reach more challenging
targets. Another motivating factor would be to understand that you work primarily for
yourself and your future career. Apart from the external rewards that your parents may
promise you, you must understand that studying well is your chance for
self-development.

Computer addiction

Computer addiction can be defined as the excessive or compulsive use of the

computer which persists despite serious negative consequences for personal, social, or
occupational function. The addiction involves online and/or offline computer usage and
consists of at least three subtypes: excessive gaming, sexual preoccupations, and
e-mail/text messaging".
Researchers link internet/computer addiction with existing mental health issues,
most notably depression. Studies showed that the majority of those who met the
requirements of internet/computer addiction suffered from interpersonal difficulties and
stress and that those addicted to online games specifically responded that they hoped to
avoid reality.
There are many consequences resulting from computer addiction. For example,
excessive computer use may result in lack of face to face social interaction. It may also
lead to Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), a condition that results in headaches, blurred
vision, neck pain, fatigue, eye strain, dry eyes, irritated eyes, double vision, vertigo or
dizziness.

5 of the best keyboard shortcuts you probably aren’t using by Jenna Berman
It’s safe to say you probably abide by the basics, but there are numerous
keyboard shortcuts you’re probably missing out on. (Seriously, there’s so much more to
the world of life-changing shortcuts than Command + F.) Each and every time you lift your
hand off of your keyboard (or trackpad) to reach for that mouse, you are wasting valuable
time. Regardless of whether you’re a Mac or a PC loyalist, we’ve got you covered. Here
are five of the best keyboard shortcuts you’re probably not using but definitely should
be.
1. Paste without carry-over formatting
Since you’ve probably already mastered the basic copy-and-paste shortcut, this
keyboard hack is the next best thing. It helps you avoid any unwanted variance in font
size, typeface, bold treatments, you name it.
Mac: Shift + Command + V, PC: Control + Shift + V
2. Access the emoji keyboard
Who doesn’t like to add an emoji or two to the end of their messages? Instead of
using the old-school smiley face (colon and closed parenthesis), use this shortcut to
access a full emoji keyboard. This way, you’ll never send a boring message again.
Mac: Control + Command + Space Bar, PC: WIN + Period Mark
3. Quickly hide everything
Have you ever experienced the panic of having your boss walk by when you have
a window up on your computer that you really don’t want anyone to see? Here’s your
quick fix so that you never have to endure that trauma again. This keyboard shortcut will
save you valuable seconds in minimizing those open windows.
Mac: Command + H, PC: Alt + F4
4. Log out and change users instantly
This keyboard hack is a helpful way to seamlessly change user profiles. Just know
that on Macs, you will always be asked to confirm your log out. If you want to log out
immediately without confirmation, simply add “option” to the shortcut.
Mac: Shift + Command + Q, PC: Control + Alt + Delete
5. Make an application full screen
Whether you are watching a movie or just need a distraction-free screen, this
keyboard shortcut will allow you to focus solely on what’s in front of you within a fraction
of a second. Mac: Control + Command + F, PC: WIN + Shift + Enter
Using keyboard shortcuts is a great way to increase productivity and make everyday
tasks significantly easier. The best part? You don’t need to be a tech wizard to learn these
computer tricks. Once you start using them, you won’t miss the days of dealing with your
mouse.

Google Docs tips everyone should know by Christina Mercer

Google offers one of the best word processors in the market with its Docs app. It
is responsive, built in the cloud and comes packed with advanced collaboration features.
But like most technology, it can also be infuriating, tricky to use and sometimes limited.
To make your overall editing experience a bit better, we offer some tips on how to get the
most from Google Docs. Here are 3 Google Docs tips everyone should know.

1. Move whole paragraphs around the doc:

If you want to move a whole paragraph from one section of your document to another,
you could copy and paste it and then delete it from its original location. However, if it's a
big document and you're making lots of changes, it can get a bit messy and you could
accidentally produce duplicate information. To avoid such tragedies, you could use your
keyboard to move whole paragraphs up and down, really easily. Here's how: Highlight
the text you want to move. Next press Alt and Shift (or Option Shift on Mac) and then use
your keyboard arrows to move the whole section up and down the document.

2. Add an e-signature:

E-signatures are great for adding that personal touch to multiple documents. They save
you printing out docs, physically signing them, scanning them back to the PC and then
emailing them out. To create one, follow these steps: Go to the 'Insert' tab, select
'Drawing', and then the 'Scribble' option. From there you can draw your signature.

3. Manage repeated text:

Let's say you're a project manager who frequently writes "needs more explanation" in
draft project docs. To save time, go to Tools, Preferences from inside a text document in
Google Docs. In the pop-up window that appears, under 'automatic substitution', type
nme below the 'replace' heading and needs more explanation below the 'with' heading.
Next, click OK. Back in your document, type nme and press the spacebar: You should see
"needs more explanation" appear automatically. If it doesn't work, go back to Tools,
Preferences to make sure that 'Automatic substitution' is checked. Try to choose
substitutions that are short and use unique letter combinations, so that Google Docs
won't mistakenly overwrite a desired word with a substitution.
