Come, Come, Ye Saints

One by One
We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet
How Firm a Foundation
Take Time to Be Holy
Let Us All Press On
Nearer, My God, To Thee
The Spirit of God
Praise to the Man
Be Thou My Vision

"Come, Come, Ye Saints" is number four. It would be my number one, but I only listen to it when I'm having
an especially hard day.

During one particularly harsh winter, anti-Mormon mobs forced them to flee — with barely any preparation —
for their lives across the Wyoming plains in winter. Half of them starved and froze to death, leaving their
families and friends to bury them in shallow graves of snow. Yet this whole time, even amidst holocaust-like
circumstances, these people remained optimistic. Sad, but optimistic, and they sang hymns to help them do so.

This was their favorite, for which it has an inexplicable place in my heart.

Let Us All Press On is number six. It’s a Mormon hymn, but I think you would really like it.
Mormons have always had trouble being accepted by others, especially other Christians. While
today, some people alienate me and shoot slurs my way, in the 19th Century, being a Mormon
was something that put a death-threat on my ancestors from almost everybody. They came up
with a lot of hymns to help them thru it all, and we still sing them today. This is one of them. I
feel that it’s a good song for any disciple of the Lord who needs courage in a world that’s getting
harder for all Christians.
I am a light,
And so are you.
But shining together,
We’re brighter than two.

We both glow softly,

A good from within.
Sweet gifts given
By Him-Without-Sin.

And when we speak,

The one with the other,
We draw from a well.
Out comes better!

We’re good each alone,

But when combined,
A thrice-bright light
Both of us find.
