year 3 semester 1 project the festive sanctuary
The Festive Sanctuary provides a space for the
Muslim majority refugee population to pray in Athens,
which is currently the only European capital that does
not have a government funded mosque.

The prayer space within the sanctuary is purposefully
exposed in the square to encourage inclusivity and
welcome people of all backgrounds to be a part of
this ritual, which the Muslim community observes five
times daily.

This project also seeks to collaborate with the City

Plaza, a hotel in Athens, which caters to refugees.
City Plaza and The Festive Sanctuary will host three
cookery classes each week, both for refugees and for
the wider public to participate in.

Inspired by the Iftar tradition of Ramadan, a cultural

feast will take place at The Festive Sanctuary every
Friday at sundown.

the empowerment facility year 3 semester 2 project

Over the course of the 20th century, questions about refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers have been on top of the national
and international agendas of many developed and developing countries. This project focuses on youth refugees in Athens.
Nearly 40 percent of the new arrivals in Greece in 2016 were children, of whom 1,146 are registered as unaccompanied minors.
Provided with insufficient support by the sovereign due to the nation’s failing economic status, youth refugees haven fallen
victim to forced prostitution and drug abuse.

The Empowerment Facility is designed to provide psychological, medical and practical support for these youth refugees: from
offering free careers advice, to vaccinations, to accommodating safe housing for the most vulnerable.
This project hopes to raise awareness of this issue as well as becoming a beacon of empowerment and refuge for this
neglected community at the centre of this run-down capital.
