1. Read the following paragraphs and answer the questions
that follow :
A month later a letter came for Father. After he finished reading
it, his eyes looked as if he had been crying. ‘‘Do you want to
know what became of your kite?’’ he said. Then he sat down
beside us and told us the whole story.
Father had a brother and a sister. He had quarrelled with his
brother and left home. Years afterward, he felt sorry and when
he went back, he found his brother had died and he couldn’t
find his sister. The letter father had just received was from his
sister, Aunt Esther, mother of Dick and Mimi. She was a widow
who lived hundreds of miles inland. One day when Dick and
Mimi were out in the woods, they discovered the kite on the
top of a tree and carried it home. When their mother saw the
kite patched with the letter, she turned pale. It was the very
letter she had once written to her brother. Philippa was her
mother’s name and Claude was her father’s. She knew who we
must be. So she sat down and wrote to Big Half Moon and
Father received her letter.

1. Read the following paragraphs and answer the questions
that follow :
Gandhiji’s funeral was to take place the day after his death.
Hours in advance, people lined the route the funeral procession
was to follow. Padmasi, Mrs Naidu’s daughter, spoke for us all
when she said simply : we will walk. It is the last time we shall
be walking with Bapu.
6 [ ò¢ü •zLjÏÓ˚!ç §yˆÏ秉¢ö

It was an agonizing walk. Thousands silently watched the

procession. Bapu lay on an open truck covered with flowers.
Thousands of people wept, trying to touch Bapu’s feet. It was
impossible to move in the thick crowd.
As I moved forward slowly I understood I was not merely in the
midst of grieving people. This was even more than the funeral
procession of India’s beloved leader. I was among people for
whom walking with Bapu had a special meaning. We had walked
with Bapu over the rough and smooth of India’s recent history.
We could not now accept the fact that the man who had led us
over many difficult paths, was never going to walk with us again.
Bapu’s slight figure had walked, staff in hand, over a large part
of India. To walk is to make slow progress. It is to think with
clarity and closely look at all that is around you, from small
insects to the horizon in the distance. Moreover, to walk was
often the only way open to the average Indian. It required no
vehicle except his own body and cost him nothing but his energy.

commonplace and transformed it into a joyful effort.

Swami hoped that with this his father would be made to see

By the time Swami was ready to leave for school, Father had
composed a long letter to the headmaster. He put it in an
envelope and sealed it.
‘‘What have you written, Father?’’ Swami asked apprehensively.
‘‘Nothing for you. Give it to your headmaster and go to your

Reading Comprehension [Unseen]

1. Read the following passage and answer the questions below :
Background [edit]
The construction for the 2.2 kilometre (1.4 mi) Vivekananda
flyover was constructed in 2008 and the work began in 2009.
IVRCL, a construction firm based in Hyderabad, won the bid for
the project. The company was given an 18 month deadline by
Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee to complete
the flyover by February 2016 and allocated a budget of nearly
165 crore (US$25 million) but only about 60 percent of the
work was completed. As of March 2015, IVRCL had a debt of
4055 crore (US$600 million) and reported losses of 672 crore
(US$100 million). In December 2015, a consortium of banks
that had lent to the company took over and the company had
been banned from doing business in Uttar Pradesh and several
others states.
On 30 March 2016, one day before the collapse, concrete was
laid on the bridge and hours before the collapse, construction
workers had heard the cracking noise of nuts in the cantilever.
Incident [edit]
At 12:40 pm IST on 31 March 2016, a 150 m (490 ft) span of
steel of the bridge collapsed, trapping many pedestrians and
vehicles underneath. The incident took place at the busy
Rabindra Sarani— K K Tagore road crossing. 27 people were
killed and at least 80 others were injured. More than 90 people
had been pulled from the rubble, but as of 1 April, over 100
people were still unaccounted for. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh
(RSS) volunteers worked in Kolkata flyover collapse relief
operations with police, NDRF and other security personnel and
the photographs of it have gone viral on various social media
platforms.
Aftermath [edit]
On 1 April 2016, the construction company IVRCL was charged
ò¢ü •zLjÏÓ˚!ç §yˆÏ秉¢ö [ 29
with murder, under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. The
police detained five IVRCL officials in Kolkata and two in
Hyderabad and sealed off IVRCL’s local office in Kolkata. The
firm called the collapse an ‘‘accident’’, while one IVRCL official
described it as an ‘‘act of god’’. The shares of the company fell
11.7% the day after the disaster. Sixty-two families living in
buildings near the accident site were asked to vacate temporarily
for the safe removal of collapsed debris. In a letter sent to BSE,
IVRCL claimed that the design of the flyover was done by a
reputed consulting firm of Kolkata.
Reaction [edit]
The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, rushed to
oversee the post-crash relief and rescue operation, and made a
statement blaming the previous left-wing government for the
disaster. The previous state government, headed by the CPI(M),
alleged that the portion of the bridge that collapsed was built
during the current Government’s tenure. Minister of State for
Urban Development, Babul Supriyo remarked that the
construction work of the flyover was carried on in an unscientific
manner and ‘‘the state administration did not take any lesson
even after the collapse of Ultadanga flyover three years ago.’’
The legal advisor to IVRCL, Sheela Peddinti said, ‘‘The glass was
shattered. It could have been a blast.’’ The vice-president of the
Indian National Congress, Rahul Gandhi visited the injured and
the site of accident. He refused to make any political statements.
Later, he incidentally raised the issue at rallies and accused the
ruling party, Trinamool Congress of negligence.’’

The worst impact was felt in the twine districts of Imphal, East

When the termor struck, the market complexes of Imphal city

when he first felt the tremor. ‘‘I tried to calm the terror stricken
vendors and shoppers. However there was complete chaos at
that time.’’ the officer said.
People had a tough time regulating the traffic with many people
turning up to see the cracked market building later in the day.
The damage was muchless because of the depth, about 40km
below the earth’s surface, at which there could be said to be a
fault dislocation because of stress. Had it occurred at a depth of
18-20km, such a high intensity quake would have resulted in

Ahmedabad : A Buddha tourist circuit in Gujarat was among the
high points of the meeting between Chinese President XI Jinping
and Prime Minister Narendra Modi here in September 2014.
But recent constructions around the 4th century Buddhist cave
in Khambalida, in Jetpur taluka of Rajkot, are an eyesore for
heritage conservationists.
The facade of the ancient Buddhist cave has been hidden behind
a fibreglass shield. Inside the floor has been plastered with freshly
laid stone tiles. These are the interventions of the Gujarat
archeology department, which seems to have got the basics of
conservation wrong.
The reason offered for constructing the grotesque canopy is
constant see page from cracks during monsoon, which was
dissolving the facade of the limestone cave. However,
conservationists say there were better ways of protecting the
monument which has braved the vagaries of nature for over

Ajanta caves had faced a similar problem and were reinforced

with compatible material. Khambhalida has three caves.
The entrance of the central cave, ‘Chaitya’ is flanked by two
large sculptures of Avalokiteshvara Padmaponi and
Avalokiteshvara Vajrapani—both forms of Buddha. These are
the only depictions of Avalokiteshvara in a Gujarat cave. The
cave features prominently in a book Buddha circuit brought out
by the government in 2010.
The former director of Gujarat state archeology department, Y S
Rawat, said, ‘‘There was no other way. This was a limestone
cave which was fragile. The fibreglass on top prevents limestone
from dissolving due to seepage. The complex is also sinking as a
whole due to weakening and had to be supported by pillars.’’

went to visit Murshidabad, a place of historical interest.
Murshidabad offers a multitude of interesting places. I was
accompanied by my parents. There are many attractive places,
such as ‘the Hazarduari’, ‘the New palace’, ‘the Kathgola Bagan’,
‘the Khoshbag Fomb’, ‘Jagath Set’s House’, etc. The most
interesting place is the Hazarduari which I have seen on the first
day. We also paid a visit to the notable attractions like the
Kathgola bagan, ‘the new palace’, the Khoshbag Fomb etc by a

When one is faced with the shock of a loved one’s death,

3. Read the following passage and answer the questions that
follow :
It was some days before the extent of the damage to
Hiroshima was known. Immediately after the bomb had
exploded on that fateful morning of 6th August, 1945, it was
evident that the destruction in the city was beyond all living
experience. A single atomic bomb, and a small one at that,
had an effect similar to the simultaneous explosion of 20,000
tons of high explosive. It was estimated that about 1,00,000
people were killed by that one explosion––more than the
population of a town the size of Cambridge. Another 40,000
people were injured. More than two-thirds of the buildings
in Hiroshima were destroyed and thousands more were
damaged beyond repair. It was found that telegraph poles
about two and a half miles form the centre of the explosion
were charred by the intense heat.
Statesmen and ordinary men and women all over the
world were shocked and frightened by the news of the
terrible devastation caused by this single atomic explosion.
Ever since, the peoples of the world have lived in the fear
that one day the final catastrophe would happen. As one
newspaper put it : ‘‘the atomic bomb means the end of war
and the end of the human race.’’
If men can agree to settle their disputes by peaceful
means, the atomic power which can mutilate and kill in was
can be used to treat diseases and to produce enough power

1. Read the following paragraphs and answer the questions
that follow :
When the family has finished tea, and gathers round
the fire, the cat casually goes out of the room. True life now
begins for him. He saunters down his own backyard, springs
to the top of the fence, drops lightly down to the other side.
He trots across and skips to the roof of an empty shed. His
movement becomes lithe and pantherlike. He looks keenly
from side to side and moves noiselessly, for he has so many
enemies––dogs and small boys with stones.
On top of the shed, the cat arches his back and rakes his
claws once or twice through the soft bark of the old roof. He
stretches himself a few times to see if every muscle is in full
working order. Then, drooping his head nearly to his paws,
he sends across a call to his kindred. Before long they come,
gliding, graceful shadows. No longer are they the meek
creatures who an hour ago were mewing for fish and milk.
They are now grim fighters.
Just think how much more he gets out of his life then
you do out of yours! And the sports they have, too! As they
get older they go in for sport to the suburban backyards.
These backyards that are dull to us, are to them hunting
grounds where they have more gallant adventure than King
Arthur’s knights ever had.
It is always spoken as a reproach against cats that they
are more fond of their home than of the people in it.
Naturally, the cat doesn’t like to leave his country, the land
where all his friends are, and where he knows every
landmark. Exiled in a new land, he would have to learn a
ò¢ü •zLjÏÓ˚!ç §yˆÏ秉¢ö [ 85

3. Read the following passage and answer the questions that
follow :
Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In
otherwords, we do not educate children only for the purpose
of educating them; our purpose is to fit them forlife. As soon
as we realize this fact we will understand that it will very
important to choose a system of education which will really
prepare children for life. It is not enough just to choose the
first system of education one finds : or to continue with one
old system of education without examining it to see whether
it is in fact suitable or not.
In many modern countries it has for some time been
fashionable to think that by free education for all whether
88 [ ò¢ü •zLjÏÓ˚!ç §yˆÏ秉¢ö

rich or poor clever or stupid-one can solve all the problems

of society. It also build a perfect nation. But we can already
see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such
countries a far larger number of people with university
degrees than there are jobs for them to fill. Because of their
degrees, they refuse to do what they think ‘low’ work; and
in fact, work with the hands is thought to be dirty and
shameful in such countries.
But we have only to think a moment to understand that
the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more
important than that of a professor : we can live without
education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned
our streets and took rubbish away from our towns. In
countries where there are no servants because everyone is
ashamed to do such work, the professors have to waste much
of their time doing house work.
In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated, we
mean that all of us must be educated in such a way that,
firstly, each of us can do whatever job is suited to his brain
and ability, and secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are
necessary to society, and that it is very bad to be ashamed
of one’s work, or to scorn someone else’s. Only such a type
of education can be called valuable to society.

1. Read the following paragraphs and answer the questions
that follow :
Of course, there was nobody for us to play with on the
Big Half Moon. We just had to make the most of each other,
and we did.
We live on the Big Half Moon island. ‘We’ are Father
and Claude and I and Aunt Esther and Mimi and Dick. It used
to be only Father and Claude and I. It is all on account of the
kite that there are more of us. This is what I want to tell you
about.
Father is the keeper of the Big Half Moon lighthouse. I
am eleven years old. Claude is twelve. In winter, when the
harbour is frozen over, we all move over to the mainland. As
soon as spring comes, back we sail to our own dear island.
The funny part used to be that people always pitied us
when the time came for us to return. They said we must be
so lonesome over there, with no other children near us. Of
course Claude and I would have liked to have someone to
play with us. It is hard to run pirate caves and things like that
with only two. But we used to quarrel a good deal with the
mainland children in winter. So it was perhaps just as well
that there were none of them on the Big Half Moon. Claude
and I never quarrelled. To be sure, Father didn’t seem to
have any relations except us. This used to puzzle Claude and
me. Everybody on the mainland had relations. Why hadn’t
we? Was it because we lived on an island? We thought it

Kolkata : On reaching Hatkhola, off Shobhabazar, a drive
down Hara Chandra Mullick Street leads the visitor to a
narrow lane, cramped even for two persons to walk together.
The whitewashed walls abound with paintings of freedom
fighters, Swami Vivekananda, Sister Nivedita and scenes from
the ‘Ramkrishna Kathamrita’.
Where this old-world north Kolkata alley ends is the

mammoth-sized wall paintings of Lord Hanuman, the resident
deity of the samity.
The Mitra family of Hatkhola donated the plot of land to
freedom fighters Upendranath Bandyopadhyay and Pushpalal
Chakraborty who were associated with Anushilan Samity.
Bandyopadhyay was also a co-accused with Barin Ghosh and

Chris wondered hopefully if Mr. Sundar was coming across
to offer some fresh views, but his footsteps dwindled away.
He stretched, thinking of how he came to be here and his
experiences in the last month.
It had all been quite sudden. His father owned Stark Plastics,
a small but highly-regarded company making plastic
products, and when he came home after his final semester
in college he was told of the exciting new collaboration
between them and KapCo in India who wanted to diversity
from steel into plastics. The project progressed smoothly,
with executives from India coming to be trained and orders
being placed for the appropriate injection machines and
moulds to be sent to India.
Then suddenly there had been a silence. When Chris, who
had become interested in the project as soon as he had
started working for his father, faxed to ask the reason, he
received an unsatisfactory reply about ‘Labour problems’.
‘‘May be I can help explain what its all about and try and
sort it out’’, he suggested to his father.
‘‘Sure’’, the old man had grunted. ‘‘With your vast experience
of six months.’’
But he had let him go. A letter to the Kapoors had elicited a
cordial invitation to stay with them, which Chris had
