Homework 5

This homework is due in class on 3rd April, 2019 (Wednesday). Please submit this homework
to your respective TA. Nothing will be accepted after 2:30 pm; no late homework please!

Solve the following problem; justify your answer carefully. This problem is worth twenty points.

Let f : R − 0 −→ R and g : R − 0 −→ R be functions, given by

|x| x2
f (x) := and g(x) := .
x |x|

Using only the ε − δ definition of limit, show that

lim f (x)
x−→0

does not exist and

lim g(x) = 0.
x−→0

Remark: You are only allowed to use the ε − δ definition of limit! Please do not use any facts about
sequences, continuous functions etc. If you do that, you will get zero!

You will get ten points for each of the parts (involving f and g).
