Fire/Explosion Emergency Response Procedures

Fire in ' university building is the most likely c'mpus emergency th't could result
in loss of property 'nd thre't to lives.  It is, therefore, most critic'l th't individu'ls
re'ct quickly 'nd responsibly to 'ny indic'tion of fire in their surroundings.  
PROCEDURES
If you SMELL smoke or g@s
● From the ne'rest phone c'll the Dep'rtment of Public S'fety, 't ext. 3111 or
255-3111.
If you OBSERVE fire or smoke
● Do not shout "Fire!"  Rem'in c'lm.
● Pull the ne'rest fire 'l'rm.  Notify those in immedi'te d'nger.
● From the ne'rest phone c'll the Dep'rtment of Public S'fety 't ext. 3111 or
255-3111 to notify the dep'rtment of the ex'ct loc'tion of the fire.
● If possible 'nd s'fe to do so 'fter initi'ting the fire 'l'rm, 'ttempt to
extinguish the fire with ' fire extinguisher.
○ Never use ' fire extinguisher on ' fire th't is l'rge enough to frighten you
or when you do not h've ' w'y of esc'pe.
○ No m'tter how sm'll the fire, never use 'n extinguisher without sounding
the fire 'l'rm, in c'se you 're overcome.
○ If you c'nnot extinguish the fire by yourself with one extinguisher, le've
the 're' 'nd let the profession'ls h'ndle it.
● If it is not possible or s'fe to extinguish the fire, from the ne'rest phone
cont'ct the Dep'rtment of Public S'fety 't ext. 3111 or 255-3111 'nd provide
the ex'ct loc'tion of the fire.
● Do not prop open 'ny fire doors.  (Fire doors h've 'utom'tic closers on
them.)
● Ev'cu'te, using 'ppropri'te exits 'nd esc'pe routes (do NOT use elev'tors). 
Provide 'ssist'nce to those who need it.
If the fire @l@rm sounds
● All 'l'rms should be tre'ted 's ' v'lid fire 'l'rm until Public S'fety personnel
verify th't it is ' f'lse 'l'rm.
● Stop wh't you 're doing immedi'tely, rem'in c'lm 'nd follow instructions.
● Do not look for other people or 'ttempt to t'ke 'long belongings (other th'n
your purse or b'ckp'ck) - don't t'ke the time to g'ther up your "stuff," your
life is more import'nt!
● Do not prop open 'ny fire doors.
● Using the ne'rest exit or esc'pe route (do NOT use the elev'tors), le've the
building quickly 'nd c'lmly.
● Persons with dis'bilities should be 'ssisted out of the building or removed to
' s'fe 're' to 'w'it ev'cu'tion by emergency responders.
● Proceed to s'fe ground 't le'st 25 feet 'w'y from the building 'nd out of the

fire l'ne(s). The Director of Crisis M'n'gement should notify emergency
response personnel of missing or dis'bled persons.
● Do not obstruct fire hydr'nts or 'ny fire/rescue workers.
● Do not re-enter the building until informed by ' uniformed officer (fire or
police).
Reporting
After cont'cting Public S'fety, 'nd 'fter meeting with the University Police,
cont'ct your supervisor.

Any time th't the fire 'l'rm is 'ctiv'ted, the building is to be immedi'tely
ev'cu'ted (see ev'cu'tion procedures).
Acting
If fire is observed or smoke smelled, DO NOT HESITATE to pull the fire 'l'rm to
ev'cu'te the building Notify Public S'fety immedi'tely 's to the specific problem
'nd its loc'tion.
If the fire 'ppe'rs no l'rger th'n ' tr'sh c'n, 'nd there is 'n extinguisher ne'rby,
AND you feel confident 'bout putting the fire out, use the following instructions
remembering the 'cronym PASS.
Pull the pl'stic t'b off the fire
extinguisher h'ndle 'nd pull the pin
out.
Aim the nozzle 't the b'se of the fire
while st'nding 'pproxim'tely 8-10'
'w'y.
Squeeze 'nd hold the h'ndle to
disch'rge the dry chemic'l inside the
extinguisher tow'rd the BASE of the
fire.
Sweep the nozzle b'ck 'nd forth 't
the BASE of the fire.
Use the entire contents of the extinguisher or stop when the fire is out. If the fire
continues 'fter emptying the extinguisher, ev'cu'te IMMEDIATELY.

c'lling 911. Give the loc'tion of the fire (building, room number).

st'tion.
^. If 'l'rm f'ils to oper'te, w'rn ne'rby occup'nts by knocking on doors 'nd
shouting w'rnings.

○ Unless told otherwise by building 'nnouncements or emergency offici'ls,
go to your predetermined 'ssembly loc'tion.*

cont'ct inform'tion on the Y'le Port'l so th't you will receive the l'test
inform'tion through Y'le Alert. M'ke pl'ns to h've 'ltern'te me'ns of
