NOTES
Fuel tanks
⎯ On the A319/320 fuel is stored in wing tanks with an inner and outer cell, connected by electric transfer valves
and a center fuselage tank
⎯ Vent surge tanks, located outboard on the wings, collect fuel overflow due to thermal expansion.
• This fuel drains back into the respective outer cell

Fuel pumps

⎯ On the A320 there are two fuel pumps in each wing inner cell and the center fuel tank
• Center tank pumps override the wing tank pumps
• Suction feed is only possible from the inner wing cells
⎯ The FAULT light will illuminate, and ECAM caution appears, when the delivery pressure drops and the pump
is on

Engine Low-Pressure Valves

⎯ The engine MASTER switch or the ENG FIRE pb controls the wing low pressure fuel shut off valve
© 2003 LR Publications FOR TRAINING ONLY 30
Fuel Quantity Indication

⎯ Fuel Level Sensing Control Unit (FLSCU) controls:

• Fueling and defueling
• IDG cooling fuel recirculation
• Center-to-wing tank fuel transfer

Fuel Feed Sequencing

⎯ Center tank feeds the engines first
⎯ With fuel MODE SEL pb in AUTO:
• Center tank pumps operate for 2 minutes after both engines are started
Will continue to run after engine start if slats are retracted & inner tank not full
• After takeoff, the center tank pumps restart after the slats are retracted
Will continue to operate for five minutes after the center tank is empty
Center tank pumps will stop if the slats are extended
⎯ With the fuel MODE SEL pb in MAN:
• The center tank pumps operate continuously until selected off
⎯ Wing tank transfer valves open when either inner wing fuel quantity drops to 1,650 lbs
• Valves remain open until the next refueling
⎯ FAULT light illuminates, with ECAM caution, when the center tank has >550 lbs. and one wing tank has <
11,000 lbs.
Fuel Recirculation System

⎯ FADEC controls the fuel return valve to regulate IDG temperature via the IDG heat exchanger
⎯ If the outer fuel cell is full, recirculated fuel overflows to the inner cell
• When the inner wing cell is full the center tank pumps automatically stop until approximately 1,100 lbs of
fuel has been used from the wing tank

Landing Gear Control and Interface Units (LGCIUs)
⎯ Two LGCIUs provide sequencing, operation, monitoring and indications for the landing gear and cargo doors
⎯ One LGCIUs controls one complete cycle and then automatically switches to the other unit
• If one unit fails the other takes over
• If a proximity sensor fails, the affected LGCIU will provide signals regarding gear and shock absorber to
the other LGCIU which automatically assumes control of the landing gear operation
⎯ LGCIU 1 controls the indicator panel

Normal Gear operation

⎯ Automatic braking is applied to the main gear during retraction via the normal brake system. Nosewheel
braking is provided by a brake band
⎯ When gear is extended, the system remains pressurized

Emergency Extension
⎯ Accomplished by gravity
⎯ Turning hand crank clockwise shuts off hydraulic pressure to the gear, opens the doors and unlocks the gear
⎯ Main gear are locked down by means of locking springs and the nose gear is downlocked by aerodynamic
forces
⎯ Gear doors remain open and nosewheel steering is deactivated

Nose Wheel Steering

⎯ Electrically controlled by BSCU
⎯ Hydraulic pressure is delivered to the steering system when:
• Nose landing gear doors are closed
• A/SKID & N/W STRG switch is ON
• Towing control lever is in the normal position
• At least one engine is operating
• The aircraft is on the ground
⎯ Hand wheel authority is reduced above 20 knots to 0° at 70 knots
⎯ Rudder pedal authority is reduced above 40 knots to 0° at 130 knots

Brakes
⎯ Brake and Steering Control Unit (BSCU) controls all normal braking functions – anti-skid, autobrakes and
brake temperature indications

Normal Brakes
⎯ Normally powered by the green system
⎯ Available with the parking brake is off (A319/320), A/SKID & N/W STRG switch ON and green pressure
available
CAUTION
If a BSCU reset is performed in flight, a switch to alternate braking without antiskid may occur at
touchdown accompanied by an ECAM message informing the crew of the switch to alternate braking
without antiskid
Antiskid System
⎯ Automatically deactivated at 20 knots
⎯ May or may not be available with alternate brakes

Autobrake System
⎯ Requires:
• Green hydraulic pressure
• Antiskid electrical power
• No failures exist in the brake system
• At least one ADIRU is functioning
• At least two SECs must be operative
⎯ Activated when ground spoilers extend
• During a rejected takeoff below 72 knots the autobrakes will not activate since the ground spoilers do not
extend
© 2003 LR Publications FOR TRAINING ONLY 49
⎯ Disarmed when
• AUTO/BRK pb is deselected
• One or more arming conditions is lost
• Ground spoilers are retracted
• 10 seconds after lift off
• Pressure is applied to at least one brake pedal
⎯ Not available with alternate brakes
Alternate Brakes
⎯ If green hydraulic pressure is insufficient, the yellow hydraulic system is automatically selected to provide
alternate brakes
⎯ Alternate brakes without antiskid are provided:
• With electrical power failure
• With BSCU failure
• If the A/SKID & N/W STRG switch is selected OFF
• If the brakes are supplied by yellow accumulator pressure only
⎯ Accumulator can provide at least seven full bake applications
CAUTION
If a BSCU reset is performed in flight, a switch to alternate braking without antiskid may occur at
touchdown accompanied by an ECAM message informing the crew of the switch to alternate braking
without antiskid.

Parking Brake
⎯ When the parking brake is on:
• All other braking modes and antiskid are deactivated
• Yellow hydraulic system or accumulators supply brake pressure
• Triple indicator indicates brake pressure
⎯ Accumulators can be pressurized by activating the YELLOW ELEC PUMP pb
• Accumulators will maintain adequate parking brake pressure for at least 12 hours

When only one ECAM display is on:
4 STS • It displays the STATUS page only when the pilot pushes the STS pb and holds
it. The next STATUS page, if any, can be displayed by releasing the pb and
pushing it again (before 2 seconds have elapsed). The new page then appears
after a short delay.
• Keeping the STS pb pressed will display the STATUS page for a maximum of
3 minutes, after which the SD displays the E/WD automatically.
Calls up the warning and caution messages that the activation of the CLR pb or
flight-phase-related inhibition may have suppressed. If there are no suppressed
5 RCL warnings or cautions, the E/WD shows “NORMAL" for five seconds. If the pilot
holds this pb down for more than 3 seconds, the E/WD shows any caution
messages that have been suppressed by the EMER CANC pb.
When pressed and held down, the SD displays all the system pages successively
at one-second intervals. If the ECAM control panel fails, this pb can be used to

Pressing this pb affects the following:
• Warnings
o Cancels (stops) an aural warning for as long as the failure
condition continues.
o Extinguishes the MASTER WARN lights.
o Does not affect the ECAM message display.
• Cautions
7 EMER CANC
o Cancel any present caution (single chime, MASTER CAUT lights,
and ECAM message) for the rest of the flight.
o Automatically calls up the STATUS page, which displays
“CANCELLED CAUTION” and the title of the failure that is
inhibited.
The inhibition is automatically suppressed when flight phase 1is initiated. It may
restore it manually by pressing RECALL pb for more than 3 seconds.
Pressing this pb simulates the application of takeoff power. This is a test that
triggers a warning if the aircraft is not in takeoff configuration. If the configuration is
correct, the E/WD displays the message “TO CONFIG NORMAL” in the TO MEMO
8 T.O. CONFIG
section. If the ECAM control fails, the CLR, RCL, STS, EMER CANC, and ALL pbs
remain operative, because their contacts are wired directly to the flight warning
and display management computers.

PITCH TRIM and THRUST LEVERS

REF CONTROL INDICATION DESCRIPTION
The pilot uses the thrust levers to do the following:
• Manually select engine thrust.
• Arm and activate autothrust (A/THR).
Levers • Engage reverse thrust.
• Engage the takeoff and go around modes
When autothrust is disconnected, the thrust levers control thrust
1 Thrust Levers
directly.
TO GA Max takeoff thrust, Go Around thrust.
FLX MCT Max continuous thrust (or FLX at takeoff).
CL Maximum climb thrust.
IDLE Idle thrust for both forward and reverse thrust.
MAX REV Maximum reverse thrust.
Reverser Permit the pilot to override the stop at the forward idle position to select
2 latching Levers reverse thrust. Stop resets when the pilot moves the lever back into the
levers forward thrust area.

The autothrust is disconnected by pressing either instinctive disconnect
pb on the thrust levers. When the autothrust system is disconnected,
thrust will immediately revert to a setting corresponding to thrust lever
Autothrust
position. If an autothrust instinctive disconnect pb is pressed and held
3 instinctive Pb
for more than 15 seconds, the autothrust system is disconnected for
disconnect
the remainder of the flight, including α floor protection. The autothrust
system can only be reset during the next FMGC power-up (on the
round).
Both pitch trim wheels control the THS mechanically, and take priority
Wheels over electrical control. Pilot action on the pitch trim wheel disconnects
the autopilot.
Scale adjacent to each trim wheel indicates trim position in degrees. A
4 Pitch Trim scale adjacent to the pitch trim scale shows the relationship between
the location of the CG and the pitch trim setting for takeoff. A green
Scale
band marks the normal range of pitch trim for takeoff. After touchdown.
the system automatically sets pitch trim to zero as the pitch attitude
becomes less than 2.5° (confirmed after 5 seconds).

NOTES
⎯ Two flaps and five slats on each wing. When the flaps are extended the ailerons droop approximately 5°
⎯ Slats are powered by both the green and blue hydraulic system
⎯ Flaps are powered by both the green and yellow hydraulic systems
⎯ If one hydraulic system fails, the associated surfaces extend and retract at half speed
⎯ If one SFCC fails, all flaps and slats operate at half speed
⎯ Four Wingtip Brakes (WTB) are activated in the case of:
Asymmetry
Overspeed
Symmetrical runaway
Uncommanded movement
• The WTBs lock flap or slat surfaces and cannot only be released on the ground
• If flap WTBs are on the slats still operate, and if the slat WTBs are on the flaps still operate
⎯ A flap disconnect detection system stops flap movement if excessive differential movement is detected
between the inner and outer flaps on the same wing
⎯ “Alpha lock” function inhibits retracting the slats from position 1 to 0 at a high AOA or low airspeed

Configurations
⎯ Takeoff configuration 1: 1+F is selected. Flaps automatically retract at 210 knots
⎯ Takeoff or go-around in configuration 2 or 3: When configuration 1 is selected, config 1+F is provided if the
airspeed is under 210 knots. Flaps automatically retract at 210 knots
⎯ Configuration 0 to configuration 1 in flight: Configuration 1 is selected
⎯ After flap retraction, configuration 1+F is no longer available until the airspeed is 100 knots or less, unless
configuration 2,3 or full have been previously selected
