Chapter 4

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Data inconsistencies are due to valve replacements while switching filtrate

containers, but even the experimental results show some inconsistencies, it clearly

followed a trend that as the filtrate volume increases, the time increases while the rate of

filtration decreases. While sudden increase in time to filtrate the solution is primarily due

to chalk build up in the filter cake that causes an increase in the amount of pressure for

the water to permeate the filter, thus requiring more time. We therefore conclude that as

more chalk build up, the filtration rate decreases and the final mass of cake is lower than

the original amount of chalk since some chalk particles are too small that it permeate

along with water.

The researchers recommend screening the chalk properly for more uniform

particle size to avoid chalk build up caused by larger chalk particles. There should be

more group members assigned in recording the time to have a more accurate reading

since the filter rate is very fast at the beginning of the experiment. Also, the switching of

valves for filtrate containers must be done as fast as possible.
