Ashtavinayaka (अष्टविनायक)

Ashtavinayaka means eight forms of Ganesha in Sanskrit Language. Lord Ganesha is always
worshiped as the god of Knowledge & Prosperity. Thus his eight forms stands for its unique
identification.

1) Moreshwar Temple, Morgaon

Shri Moreshwara Ashtavinayak : The temple is covered from all sides by four Minarets and gives
feeling of a mosque if seen from a distance. This was done to prevent attacks on the temple during
Mughal periods.

Location: Shri Mayureshwar Mandir is located in Morgaon, about 80 kilometres from Pune city.
The temple is the starting and ending point of a pilgrimage of eight revered Ganesha temples
called Ashtavinayaka.

2) Siddhivinayak Temple, Siddhatek

Shri Siddhivinayaka Ashtavinayak : God Vishnu is supposed to have vanquished the asuras
Madhu and Kaitabh after propitiating Ganesha here. This is the only idol of the eight
Ashtavinayakas.

Location: Siddhivinayak Temple of Siddhatek is one of the Ashtavinayaka and the only
Ashtavinayaka shrine in Ahmednagar district. The temple is located on the northern bank of the
river Bhima on a hillock, surrounded by thick foliage of Babul trees.

3) Ballaleshwar Temple, Pali

Shri Ballaleshwar Ashtavinayak : Ganesha is believed to have saved this boy-devotee, Ballala,
who was beaten by local villagers and his father for his single-minded devotion to him. This is the
only Ashtavinayak idol to be name after a Ganesha devotee.

Location: Ballaleshwar temple is one of the eight temples of Lord Ganesha and the only
incarnation of Ganesha that is known by his devotee’s name. Ballaleshwar Pali temple is situated
between fort Sarasgad and the river Amba,at a distance of 30 km from Karjat in the Raigad district.

4) Varadavinayak Temple, Mahad

Shri Varadvinayak Ashtavinayak : Ganesha is said to reside here in the form of varada Vinayaka,
the giver of bounty and success. This is the only temple where devotees are allowed to personally
pay their homage and respects to the idol.

Location: Varadvinayak Temple is located in Mahad village situated in Khalapur taluka near
Karjat. The idol of this temple is known as Varada Vinayak and temple premises are on one side
of a beautiful pond.

5) Chintamani Temple, Theur

Shri Chintamani Ashtavinayak : Ganesha is believed to have got back the precious Chintamani
Jewel from the greedy Guna for sage Kapila at this spot. However, after bringing back the jewel,
sage Kapila put it in Lord Ganesha’s neck naming him

Location: The Chintamani Ganesh Temple of Theur is one of the larger and more famous of the
Ashtavinayaka Ganesha temples. Like other Ashtavinyaka icon, central icon of Ganesha is
considered self-manifested, located near the confluence of river Bhima and the conjoint river
Mula-Mutha.

6) Girijatmaj Temple, Lenyadri

Shri Girijatmajavinayaka Ashtavinayak It is believed that Parvati (Lord Shiva’s wife) performed
penance to beget Ganesha at this point. This temple stands amidst a cave complex of 18 caves of
Buddhist origin. This temple

Location: The Girijatmaja Vinayak temple at Lenayadri is located at Lekhan hills, at a distance
of about 160 km from Pune. Lenyadri cave 7 is dedicated to the god Ganesha, one of the
Ashtavinayak shrines in Maharashtra.

7) Vighnahar Temple, Ozar

Shri Vigneshwara AshtavinayakThe demon Vighnasur, after being defeated by Lord Ganesha
pleaded to show Mercy. Ganesha granted his plea, but on the condition that demon should not go
to the place where Ganesha worshipping is going

Location: Vighnahar Ganapati Temple is located about 85 km from Pune on the banks of Kukadi
River. The Vigneshwara Temple Ganesha form worshipped here is called Vigneshwara, one of the
eight revered shrines of Ganesha in Maharashtra.

8) Mahaganapati Temple, Ranjangaon

Shri Mahaganpati Ashtavinayak Shiva is believed to have worshipped Ganesha before fighting the
demon Tripurasura here. Constructed so that the rays of the Sun fall directly on the idol during
the southward

Location: Ranjangaon Ganpati Temple celebrating eight instances of legends related to Ganesha.
The idol of these lord Ganesh is also named as Mahotkat, located at Rajangaon 21 km before
Shirur and 50 km from Pune.
