Tillage is mostly ineffective according to Wiersma, because shallow tillage will not reduce adult
emergence in the spring and plowing will still leave some population shallow enough to emerge.
Research has shown that even if 10 percent of the population survives, it will produce enough adults
the next season to cause economic damage. Wiersma said in western states and western ND where they
have adopted no till at a greater length, they have seen good results as it helps maintain natural habitat
for wheat stem sawfly enemy populations better than even reduced till.
