ABSTRACT

In the modern era of furnitures, folding furnitures like chairs and tables are very popular as
this were used by people to let their home be more spacious that brings to the topic that this
furniture is a multipurpose furniture. The researchers goes to the product they named as
"CHAIBLE" which is the combination of a folding chair and a folding table and to make it to have
multiple purposes for the people to use it. The researchers’ objective in this product is to know if
this product will have an ability to free up space and storage inside their home and how well this
product can benefit the users. In order for the researchers to do this, they are assigned to make their
own product and build it and finish it in a designated time. The only problem that the researchers
faced doing the product is finding a good materials as the researchers think the safety of the product
when the users sits on it. They gathered materials for their product that can fit for its durability.
They used palo-china as their wood because of its strength, light colored and it's durability that fits
for the product. They added an extra features to the product where you can play chess for the
entertainment. The researchers did this product in a span of 20 days. After they finished the product,
they presented it in exhibit to explain what the capabilities of the product are. The researchers
concluded that the product useful and can benefit the users as this product can free up space and

Review of Related Literature

As we see in this modern age, furniture are an essential part of our everyday lives. Furniture

is everywhere we can see it in our own houses, building and etc. We can also see many businesses

that is mainly towards furniture making as it’s the best product for its usefulness. In accordance

with McMahon (2016), for the lacking of space area like offices, businesses or even inside the

houses, a folding table is very more likely be usable for this problems as this product gives many

different use for the users for the product is a multipurpose. The statement above explains that

there are business places that are lacking in space which is why McMahon states that combo

furniture like chaible or something is very beneficial to its users especially in a space-lacking area.

He also asserted that the folding tables are very convenient as this product are very flexible that it

can store right away in a place where the product can be stored as this can be fold into smaller

object to make the room have a bigger capacity.

Based on the statement of Christensen, M.B. (2014), the mechanism of a functional folding

chairs gives some pleasing design to the eyes of a the buyers in which the chairs gives more

additional value to the product’s feature. He also said that a simplicity of a folding and unfolding

of the chair makes it more appreciated that shows compliments from the product and uniting the

value of the hearts of the consumer about the product.

From the statement of Buffart (2017), In today’s age architectural application, the

functionality of a folding products like chairs and tables are really helpful to lessen the space of

the user. Utilizing this products is a good way and idea to transform any houses with a shortage of

space into a spacious area which helps the user to be less compact inside their house. He also stated
that having a multipurpose furniture provides multiple creativity as it unleashes more potentials

and more capabilities for the future users to come.

A claim by Sakanoue K., et. al, (2012), folding table’s part are very important as this will

help the product fully functional. Using specific parts for the locks, for the support and for the

shaft holes will make the product easily to use. Using the parts should be useful as this will

strengthen the product itself. The producer should have a manual on where to put the parts of the

product in order for the user to know where it will be put and where will be the designated places

that should be put.

Piretti, G., (2015) states that the parts of a folding chair has an elements or parts where

there is a right measurement. If the parts has a specific measurements, like having the chair’s pair

of legs parts and the rotatable joints structure should be in a transverse axis as this will make the

users be more comfortable and the chair will not be shakier. Having a right measurement pf a

chair will be more structured and fine as this will make the users like more the product.

According to Frankel, A.D., Zheng, & S., Zheng, T., (2014), headrest is very important to

a chair as this is very universal for the product that will make it more comfortable. The model of

a headrest expands the functionality of the chair as it is attached at the top of the backrest of a

folding chair. This will give the product flexibility as for the multipurpose product as it give

cleverness of the product on how the headrest be more supportive to the products purpose of

comfortability.
According to Yang, B., (2012), supporting frames of the folding product is a portion of a

multipurpose products which are called extras. Supports in an object gives an additional safety

for the product. Example of supporting frames are the backrest support, sliding sleeves, support

rod and the frame body. Having this supporting materials gives the users application to add more

benefits as they use their folding chair. The more they have a supporting frames, the more they

are likely to love the product and they can have like a more decorative chair in their house.

From the statement of Lu, CM, et. al., (2010), locks in a folding chair is very important as

the locks will help the product to not easily be broken and will support every joints of the

product. The locking mechanism of a folding chair will be the support of the chair as this provide

the strength to the any parts where the locks is being attached from. As the users use the locks

from the product, they will not be worried for their safety as the locking mechanism provides

safety and convenience of the user.

Procedures:

1. Searched many models of chairs and tables and adjusted the dimensions to ideally match
the size of Chaible, finalized the measurements and after that draw it.

The researchers have brainstormed

about the main design of the
product “Chaible” and what the
measurement will be. They drew it
so that they can easily clarify and
understand the concept.

Figure 1. The figure about shows the early stages of the chaible and the measure of each and
every part of the said product.
2. Created a prototype.

The researchers have brainstormed about the

resulting design of the product and this is what
they’ve come up with. The figure shows what the
chaible looks like on its side view. The figure
shows the product’s main parts: backrest, armrest,
the movable footrest, and the feet.

Figure 2. This is the prototype of the product “Chaible”.

3. Canvassed for the materials and bought them. Prepared all the materials to start the
creation of Chaible.

The researchers collected materials

that are already present in their
respective vicinities and bought the
lacking materials that is also
needed for the product to be done.

Figure 3. The figure about shows the researcher collecting wood and other materials needed for
the creation of the product.

4. Mark the palo china with pencil where the cuts are to be made. Metro is used.
The two people in the figure are the
two researchers of Team WBE that
were assigned to measure and mark
the Palo china where the cuttings
will be done.

Figure 4. The figure shows the measurement the researchers made to the wood.

5. After marking the designated areas, the electric wood cutter is then used to cut the palo
china.

The researchers assigned one of

their member to cut down the Palo
china where the previous
researchers marked it. They used
an electric wood cutter to cut down
the wood to diminish the time that
will be consumed.

Figure 5. The figure shows one of the researchers cutting the wood needed for the creation of the
chaible.

6. After cutting the wood (palo china), the woods are then stick together using a wood glue.

The researchers used “Stikwel”

wood glue in sticking the palo
china together. Using the wood
glue, the researchers attached two
handrest and one for supporting the
backrest.
Figure 6. The figure above shows the seat of the chaible after applying wood glue and sticking
the Palo china together.

7. After sticking the wood with wood glue, let it dry up and attached the backrest along with
the hinges and drilled the screws into the hole within the hinges to the backrest.

The researchers drilled six screws

for each hinges. There are four
hinges applied to the Chaible, two
to the back and two to the front
part. The researchers screwed
twenty-four screws in totality the
dozen being attached unto the
backrest of the Chaible.

Figure 7. The figure above shows the researcher drilling the cross-headed screws to the hinges
where the backrest is going to be attached.

8. After adding the hinges to the chaible, the square bars (steel bars) are then are sliced
using metal saw.

The researchers sliced the metal

square bars into twelve (12) pieces.
The 4 longer ones are for the feet,
the 8 short ones are for the braces
of the feet.

Figure 8. The figure shows the cutting of square bars that are going to be used as the feet of the
chaible.
9. After cutting the square bars into the desired measurements, the square bars are welded to
create the feet.

The researchers proceeded into

welding the sliced square bars.
They sought help from a father of
one member of Team WBE.

Figure 9. The figure shows that the researchers sought help in welding the feet of the chaible.

10. After welding the square bars, the end of each bars are then even out using an electric
grinder.

The researchers refined the end of

each foot of the chaible after
cutting it. This end up balancing
the chaible more and provides
steadiness of the said product.

Figure 10. The figure shows the main frame of the chaible’s feet after refining the end points of
the feet.

11. After refining the end of each foot, the braces are then welded into each spaces between
every feet.
The researchers have refined the
end of each feet first before they
proceeded into welding the braces
between the feet. They added brace
because it strengthens the core of
the product which are the feet.

Figure 11. The figure shows the researcher welding the braces into the feet of chaible
TIMETABLE

This section is the time table. The table below shows a detailed description of the
procedures the researchers did during that given day. It took the researchers six (6) days to
complete the product.

Date/Time Task
DAY 1 The research group held a meeting and brainstormed about the final
January 13, 2018 design of the product “Chaible” which is a multipurpose furniture.
2:00 PM They created a prototype made up of karton at Summerwind IV,
Amsterdam, Dasmariñas City.
DAY 2 The research group searched and canvassed for the materials needed
January 14, 2018 for the creation of the product. After buying and collecting all of the
9:30 AM needed materials, the group measured and marked the palo china with
the right measurements and then proceeded to cut the palo china for
the chaible’s main frame (backrest, seat, armrest, and front footrest)
using an electric wood cutter and smoothened the table with sand
paper.
DAY 3 The research group glued the armrest and backrest support to the seat
January 20, 2018 using wood glue. They let the wood glue dry up. They drilled holes
11:00 AM into the backrest support and front footrest where the hinges will be
placed. Then they drilled the screws into the hinges for the backrest
and mini footrest. After drilling all the screws in the hinges, the group
applied a natural varnish to the entirety of the wooden parts of the
chaible.
DAY 4 The research group proceeded to measure and mark the square bars
February 10, 2018 which will be used as the main component of the feet of the product.
11:00 AM They cut the metal bars and smoothen each end and then welded each
cuttings using an electric welding machine.
DAY 5 The research group attached braces to the feet to strengthen the feet
February 17, 2018 of the chaible. After welding and smoothening the feet, they coated
10:00 AM the whole feet with a black paint. The group drilled 8 holes on the top
part of the whole feet where the wooden frame of the chair will be
attached. They then drilled the screws to the holes made on the top
part of the feet and attached the chaible.
DAY 6 The group attached an angle bar to the back of part of the chaible as a
February 25, 2018 support for the backrest when tilted backwards. Then added a chain
11:00 AM from the front of the chaible to the mid top part of the backrest as an
added support for the backrest. The research group added a
chessboard design on top of the chaible as an added design.
