1. INTRODUCTION
This report describes the various activities executed at site, in laboratory and depicts the nature
of sub-soil strata. This report also evaluates the various soil properties required for computation
of Safe Bearing Capacity required for “Proposed ROR Line in DN GC Railway Line at GOMOH.
This job of subsurface exploration was assigned to M/s. Ultra Geo Civil Projects Private Limited,
Ghaziabad (UP) by M/s Neel Construction Links Pvt. Ltd. A-402, Rail Vihar, Sector-15 /II,
Gurgaon-122011.
2. SCOPE OF WORK
In order to collect data and achieve the project objectives, studies and site investigations were
conducted. Main purpose of these studies was to obtain the relevant geotechnical data
including sub-surface profile, classification, behavior and engineering properties of soil / rock.
Analysis of field and laboratory test results and to provide the precise and feasible
recommendations of foundations for “for “Proposed ROR Line in DN GC Railway Line at
GOMOH. The Bore Holes depth is taken as suggested by the Client for boring at different
locations.

3.1 Mobilization on Site
The required equipment and team was mobilized to the site for carrying out the
required field work and demobilized on satisfactory completion of the entire field work.
Each Sample extracted was labeled properly and kept separately in poly bags to
maintain the natural moisture content.
Page 02
3.5 Disturbed Soil Sample
During the course of boring, disturbed samples were obtained by drill bit. Collected
disturbed samples were used for verification of layer stratification. Immediately after
taken from borehole, the samples will be placed in polybags and labeled.
Page 03
4.0 Laboratory Work
The Undisturbed and disturbed soil sample collected during the sub surface investigation was
transferred to the laboratory. The laboratory testing of samples have been carried out to
access physical as well as strength deformation characteristics of the soil.
The broad objectives of laboratory testing of soil are given below:
1. Measurement of Physical Properties of Soil for Soil Classification. Based on Soil
Classification, general guide lines for hydraulic properties (permeability etc.), Strength
properties (shear strength parameters, compressibility etc.), suitability of soil for
different purpose (e.g. foundations, etc.) can be obtained. The tests required are
Sieve Analysis, Liquid Limit and Plastic Limit Tests.
All the tests are carried out in accordance with relevant Indian Standards Codes on Soil
Engineering. The soil based on physical properties is classified as per IS 1498 – 1970. The
detailed procedure and guide lines for the Laboratory Tests are given in relevant Indian
Standards on Soil Engineering. A brief description of different tests is given below:
The Sieve Analysis Test is performed for particle size distribution analysis of coarse fraction.
The sieves are from 75 microns to 4.75mm for sand with / without fine fraction. For soils
containing Gravels, the set of sieves up to 80mm size are to be used.
Consistency Limits Are Liquid Limit, Plastic Limit and Shrinkage Limit. These tests are
performed on fine grained soil with cohesion (clay and plastic Silt). The cohesive soil exhibits
plasticity in presence of water. The in-situ strength of such soil depends very much on its water
content. Liquid Limit Test and Plastic Limit Test are used for classification of fine grained soil
as per IS Classification. Higher Liquid Limit Coupled with lower Plasticity Index (Liquid Limit –
Plastic Limit) indicates Swelling Soil. The Plastic Limit is the water content at which the soil
when rolled into threads of 3mm diameter on a glass plate just crumbles.
The shear strength of soil is measured mainly using Direct Shear Test and/or Tri-axial
Compression Test. Direct shear test is mainly used for Cohesionless soils. The sample of size
60 x 60 x 25mm ht. is sheared by applying shear force on predefined horizontal plane. The plot
of normal stress v/s shear stress gives shear parameters: Cohesion and Angle of Internal
Friction. Tri-axial Compression Test is best suited for Clayey soil. The sample of size 38mm
dia. x 76mm height. After applying confining pressure, deviator stress is applied till failure. %
Free Swell Test is measure of increase in volume of a soil sample in water compared with a
similar weight poured in identical volume of Kerosene.
Page 04
CORE LOGGING, CORE RECOVERY, RQD
Core logging is done to describe type & characteristics rock stratum occurring in the field, geological
structures including detailing for preservation & identification of the Cores obtained during drilling. In
core logging, the cores are to be indexed and stored as per I.S.: 4078 The observations are made for %
Core Recovery, length and number of pieces of cores, Fractured Surfaces, Rock Quality Designation,
nature and type of rock, geological structures, etc. The information obtained by core logging is
represented in the Lithologs.
On removing the core from the barrel, all pieces of core are put in a partitioned wooden box
specially built for the purpose. The ratio of total length of rock pieces collected to length drilled,
expressed as percentage, is known as Core Recovery (CR). To obtain Rock Quality Designation (RQD),
only those pieces of rock which are 100mm and longer are measured for their total length. The above
length divided by length drilled, expressed as percentage, is known as RQD. RQD value is always equal
to or less than the value of core recovery.
CR (%) = (Length of Core/Length of Run) *100
RQD (%) = (Length of core pieces,100mm and above/ Length of run) *100
If the core is broken by handling or during drilling (i.e. the fracture surfaces are fresh, irregular
breaks rather than natural joint surfaces), the fresh broken pieces are fitted together and counted as one
piece. Some judgment is necessary in case of thinly bedded sedimentary rocks and foliated
metamorphic rocks and the method is not so exact in these cases as in igneous rocks, thick bedded
limestone, sand stones etc. However, the system has been applied successfully even for shale,
although it is necessary to log the cores immediately upon removing them from the core barrel before air
slacking and cracking can begin.
All the test results are given in the Appendix-III of this report.

5.3 THE GROUND WATER LEVEL:
The ground water level was not observed in any of the bore hole during boring activities at site.
However, as the proposed structures are important structures and surface water may rise
during heavy rainy season, to ensure the safety of the structure in the worst condition, for
design purposes the ground water table may be considered 0.5 to 1.0 meter above from the
existing position, if prevails below the boring depth.
6.1 General :
The main aim of the Investigations is to determine type of Foundation and placement depth of the
foundation and safe bearing capacity.
For the present investigations one borehole is used at each location as given at Sl. No. 5.0 above.
The Results of the field and laboratory tests are summarized in the Annexure III.
In the present case, considering the subsurface condition, it is proposed to provide open
foundation at depths below from the existing ground level (EGL) 2.5 or 3.0 or 3.5 or 4.0 meter to
rest the foundation on available strata.
Page 10
6.4 Allowable Bearing Capacity Calculations
For preliminary design these presumptive values may be taken based on the assessment of
experienced engineering geologist taking into consideration the various characteristics of rock
mass. As per Table -2 IS 12070 -1987 the safe bearing pressure is given below:
Massive crystalline bed rock including granite, diorite, gneiss, trap rock 1,000
Soft or broken rock (excl. shales ) and broken lime stones 100
Shales 30
Corrections To Be Applied:
For getting the allowable bearing pressure the safe bearing pressure obtained from above Table
shall be multiplied with the correction factors according to the geological conditions as per IS:
12070 Clause 9.2.
Correction Factors:
Submerged conditions C1= 0.50 to 0.75 depending upon the aperture of joints.
Orientation of joints C2 = 0.50 to 1.00 for joint orientation, applicable for slopes only.
For the present case the rock is highly weathered rock,
q = 100 T/m2, C1=0.5 and C2=1.0
Page 11
Table 3 of IS-12070, Design & Construction of Shallow Foundation on Rock, gives net allowable
pressure based on RMR values. These values will ensure settlement of foundation to be less than
12 mm.
Estimation of Rock Mass Rating (RMR):
Sl. ITEM AP-28 (BH-01)
No. Value Rating
1 Point Load Strength, MPa 2 to 4 7
2 RQD 50 -75 13
3 Spacing of Discontinuities, m 0.2-0.6 10
4 Condition of Discontinuities <1 mm 25
5 Ground Water Condition Damp 10
6 Adjustment for Joint Orientation Fair -7
Rock Mass Rating (RMR) 58
The present case falls into the Classification III with RMR 41-60.
Hence safe bearing pressure is 151 T/m2.
