Biomethanation

Distillery slops/spent wash from alcohol manufacturing is highly polluted with organic
substances and thus, it is necessary to decrease the pollution load to have an eco-friendly
environment. Biomethanation is a process in which COD and BOD of distillery slops/spent wash is
reduced thru anaerobic digestion in which methane gas is produced as a by product which can be
used as fuel to boiler.

There are three steps during biomethanation (anaerobic digestion) process, these are:

Hydrolysis in which the organic material is break down to usable sized molecules such as sugar;
Fermentation or the conversion of decomposed matter to organic acids; and finally, the
methanogenesis in which the organic acids are converted to methane gas.
