OPERATING PRECAUTIONS PI of its ability. © Do not install your deck in a location where it will be exposed to the sun or where it is near a stove or any other source of ex- tremely high temperatures. The temperature range for the correct use of this deck is from 5°C to 36°C. ¢ If you use your cassette deck near an electric fan or an electric sewing machine, a humming noise may be generated. ¢ Do not store your recorded tapes near a magnet, motor, television set, or near any source of magnetism. This will downgrade the sound quality and cause noise. Built-in Dolby noise reduction circuit for reduced noise A dolby noise reduction circuit is provided for greatly reduced tape hiss. Tape travel with a wow/flutter of only 0.09% (WRMS) All-electronic full automatic stop mechanism which does not tax the tape and changes color with the operating mods ise bear in mind the following precautions so that your cassette deck will operate to the best If you stack your cassette deck on top of an amplifier or tuner, it may be affected by hum, If this happens, change the installation location of the deck. Avoid installing the deck in dusty and very humid locations. The sound quality of your tapes will be impaired if you allow the heads to get dirty. Get into the habit of cleaning them re- gularly. If they have been depressed, they will be locked together. DOLBY NR OFF DOLBY NR ON Dolby NR oJ '® The stop and eject operations with this unit are designed as a single action, When the Stop/eject key is depressed halfway, the stop operation is performed and the Function keys are released. When the same key is Pushed right down, the eject operation is Performed with the result that the cassette is ejected. Stop operation Eject operation BEFORE RECORDING Optical display This component comes with an optical display which uses green, yellow and red LEDs to in cate the peak level. Peak level There are two ways of indicating the level of signals: VU display and peak display. A VU display indicates the sound volume. But when input signals are supplied in pulse-like form, a level lower than the peak is indicated and so even when the display is confined within 0 VU during recording, the sound is sometimes dis- torted upon playback. The peak display indicates the peak (maximum value) of the input signals. Setting the recording level The important thing about recording on a cassette deck is to make the most of the per- formance of the tape you are using and to record the signals with the recording level as high as you can without distortion. This deck is adjusted so that the green indi- cators will light up normally, the yellow indi- cators will occasionally light up and the red indicators will not light up when you record sound, Fine adjustment of recording level As you can see in the figure, the relationship between the input signals and the distortion differs according to the type of tape used. If you use an LH tape, distortion is about 2% even with an input level of +6 dB, Distortion is about 4% with an input level of +6 dB when you use a chrome type tape. Even with the same type of tape, these characteristics vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and from tape to tape. However, if you adjust the level so that the +3 dB in cator comes on with an LH tape and so that the +6 dB indicator does not come on, and so that the +3.dB indicator comes on with a chrome type tape, you will be able to record sound with a high signal-to-noise ratio and with mini mal distortion. RECORDING/TAPE RUN INDICATOR When the Power switch is set to on, this lights up green to indicate that power is being supplied to the deck. When you load the cassette tape and depress the Play/pause key, this green indicator will wink to indicate that the tape is now traveling. When you depress the Record key for record- ing, the indicator lights up red to indicate the recording/pause mode, If the Play/pause key is now depressed, this red indicator winks and indicates that the deck is now set to the recording mode. PLAY/PAUSE KEY This cassette deck is set to the pause mode when a cassette tape is loaded. To stop the tape temporarily during recording or playback, de- press the Play/pause key to release it. When the same key is depressed again, the tape starts traveling again and recording or playback resumes. AUTOMATIC STOP SYSTEM When the tape is completely wound in record, playback, fast forward or rewind, the automatic stop mechanism becomes activated to stop the tape and return the control key(s) to the neut- ral position. During recording, the Record key is not released but this does not indicate that there is anything wrong with the cassette deck. RECORDING 1. Depress the Record key and load the cas- sette tape. 2. Set the Input switch. Depress for recording with a microphone, Release for a DIN in recording, 3. Select the Dolby NR switch. Depress,to activate the Dolby system. Release to deactivate the Dolby system. 4, Select the Tape selector switch position. Depress for a chrome position type tape. Release for an LH or normal tape, 5. Set the recording level 6. Depress the Play/pause key and record- ing will now start. The line output signals are not fed out during recording. Use the _amplifier's monitor switch and set it to SOURCE to monitor the recording. The construction of this unit allows even cas- settes whose accidental erasure prevention lugs at the rear have been broken out to be recorded. Before recording anew on a pre-recorded cas- sette, first check the recorded contents and then re-record. 4 3 DOLBY NR ON Hf DOLBY NR OFF 4 CrOz position tape BL LH tape or Normal tape mic ¥ Hoon input DOLBY NOISE REDUCTION SYSTEM When you play back a recording tape, you will often be irritated by a hissing noise. This is particularly noticeable with pianissimo sound ‘on the tape such as when the violins go solo in an orchestral piece. The Dolby noise reduction system was developed to suppress this hiss. It is an invention of the Dolby Laboratories, Inc. There are two types: ‘A’ type is the basic system for professional-use audio, and ‘B’ type derived from ‘A’ type for use in general audio. This noise suppression system is designed to increase the recording level over the ordinary level when the level in the midrange and treble (where the hiss is particularly irritating) is lower than the constant level. When the tape is played back, the level which was increased during re- cording is reduced and then played back. The Dolby system can improve the signal-to- noise ratio by about 5dB at 1 kHz and by about 10 dB at levels of over 5 KHz. CLEANING THE PARTS When you use the deck for a long period of time, tape particles and dust build up on the heads and this causes noise, impaired sound quality and other problems. Get into the habit of cleaning the head section regularly in order to enjoy the best sound at all times. For the best sound quality, clean the head section two or three times a month with the head cleaning swabs or the optional head cleaning fluid (HC-10). Cleaning the head section Raise the head cleaning lid on the top of the unit and clean the head section, If the parts are very dirty and the magnetic particles have built up into a black deposit, use the optional head. cleaning fluid (HC-10) to clean the parts. MOUNTING THE HANDLES Handles can be mounted on this cassette deck. Attach at the sides of the model as shown in the figure.
