COMPARITIVE SKETCH OF WORKS OF INDIAN

WRITERS
-By Sreemaee . A
There goes a saying that says “Literature very effectively portrays the true
picture of society”
Indian writers like kalki, masti venkateshwara iyengar and vikram seth have
enhanced the standards of indian writing. Their stories have pictured the
society in its truest, most basic forms and have depicted the
language, social status and the local culture in different layouts and time
frames. Sure, the society is evolving everyday and their stories might not
be 100% relatable to the present day scenarios but they have come closer
than any other writers ever did in illustrating an apt sketch of the present
community.
Gathering value points from the stories ‘the tale of melon city’ , ‘ranga’s
marriage’ , and ‘the tiger king’ by the three authors, we can conclude that
despite the fact that we are not living in a society with kings and ministers,
we are still surrounded by people who have similar basic charecter and
mindsets. The stories depict the emotions, mentality and personality of a
person spot on!

Taking the story ranga’s marriage by Masti venkateshwara Iyengar into

consideration,
It is set in the 21s century in a rural setting called hosahalli, which
according to the narrator was ignored by the cartographer and is not even
on the maps. And ranga, one of the only people who was apparently
fortunate enough to go and study in the city bangalore comes back to the
village after six months with new ideas and views on marriage, how he was
inspired by the story of shakuntala and dushyantha. The story concludes
on a rather hypocritical note with ranga giving in to the concept of child
marriage and falls in love with a 11 year old girl ratna, which makes him
pedophllic. Some other concepts that we can gather from the story--

we can see how villages being disconnected from the rest of the world is a
liability and the people can never evolve to catch up to the city life due to
the culture and narrow mindset, and lack of exposure.
It also depicts how everyone in the village behave like family members
helping out each other, which is a positive aspect true to this day. the story
shows how village traditions glorifies arranged/child marriages and
astrology.
And true to this day, people are hypocrites, and despite all the modern
thoughts they are still haunted by their traditional beliefs and it usually
asserts a dominance over the modern views.
people can be desperate enough to uphold their so called beliefs of the
village that they go to the lengths of setting up a situation for the person to
come back to the old system despite it being originally against his will.

Then comes the story, tiger king. Written by author kalki.

The story, set in ancient india, in times of kings and kingdoms, potrays this
king who sets upon a journey in order to change his fate
It shows how the appointed ministers aren’t honest and only obey the king
in fear of him.
They should put the country before their jobs when advising the king. the
king doesnt take his fate in good spirit and dedicates his entire life trying to
change it without any concern regarding the environment nor the disrupting
the food chain and still ends up dying as foretold.
The bureaucracy wasnt transparent and was corrupted. It also shows how
the king, a metaphor to the mindset of modern man was selfish and
misused his powers to establish a supremacy to kill the tigers and was too
obsessed about his fate that he didnt bother to rule the state honestly.
the society, like a few people believed in superstitions, miracles and fate
and took it seriously

The tale of melon city, yet another story set in kingdom’s times, written by
author vikram seth is a depiction of how lack of common sense or taking
things way too literally can bring upon one’s wrath. And how catastrophic
lack of practicality in decision making can be.
It potrays how naive people can be and how improper governance can lead
to disastrous outcomes.
In yet another metaphor to people’s mentality these day, it shows how
people put themselves before the country and justice that they dont mind
giving unjust advices just to save their jobs, and how the selfishness can
lead to consequences.
In a striking resemblance to modern society, people dont care about their
ruler or the kingdom as long as they have an obstacle-free lifestyle
the story is a sattire on kings and their kingdoms in olden days

Drawing a conclusion after reading between the lines of the three stories by
the said authors, all of them write their short stories as a sattire to the
situations in the society showcasing how exactly it is in to live in the
society, and also subtly hinting to the readers, that the characters are a
metaphor to a person living in the modern society. They have made indian
writing evolve to such a level that no matter which point of time a person
reads it in, it still is somehow relatable. Its a breakthrough and these
authors lay the foundation stones for a new era of india writings.
The authors are and will continue to be guiding light to budding and
proffesional writers alike :)
