Q&A (no.

28)
This Q&A focuses on mainly on Doi sensi's answers to the questions from person S who is from Kanto
area in Japan and has attended one of GRN master's Koryukai.
First of all, this is a part of S's story. "Last November, I came across Reiki and found out about two
different styles of Reiki. One is Jikiden Reiki which carries on traditional Reiki, the other one is Gendai
Reiki which is the mixture Western Reiki. I have been reading books and internet information
regarding both types of Reiki and at first I was absolutely certain about Jikiden, however I would also
want to learn more about Gendai Reiki. Some questions might seem rather rude to you however I am
seriously tormented by the differences and this is my honest feeling so please understand." This story
shows that there is misunderstanding about S's knowledge however, this type of situation can occur
quite often in our practice within our members. It would be useful to see below answers from Doi
sensei for your future reference.

Ql,
I thought that Reiki was used to be focused to cure illness however Gendai Reiki seems not to
concentrated on it, why is it? Your book seems to indicate that "it is difficult to detect 'Byousen' or 'ill-
gland'", on the other hand, Jikiden Reiki states that "anyone can feel it". Is it really difficult? Or is it
attainable through practice?

Al,
First of all, I would like to say that Gendai Reiki has no relationship with Jikiden Reiki at all. The origin
of Jikiden Reiki was started by Tadao Yamaguchi who gained knowledge from his mother Chiyoko
Yamaguchi who was taught by Hayashi sensei (who was taught by Usui sensei) for only 5 days. Tadao
Yamagushi was a teacher of 'J Healing' and his style and content of teaching was different from the
traditional Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai. From the beginning, Reiki Ho is "a pathway to health and
happiness" (Ultimately it is to aim self-improvement but hand healing and experience the physical
health is the only starting point). Some group would state that "the purpose of Reiki was to cure
illness" and "(Gendai Reiki has) changed its purpose" however, those group do not know the truth of
Usui Reiki Ryoho.

Q2,
Why did you (Doi sensei) take Western Reiki into your practice of Gendai Reiki while you have been
impressed with traditional Usui teaching? I have heard that there is a clear difference in power
between Western and Traditional Reiki. In fact, some master said that it was big power difference
when the master re-learnt traditional Reiki after Western Reiki.

A2,
I could not judge which Reiki is better than the other between Western and traditional Reiki however
I heard that many people left the traditional Reiki due to the realisation of no ability to
feel the "Hibiki". Western Reiki has been tested medically repeatedly and Western Reiki has been
applied within the current medical system in Western countries such as UK and US. In Uk, health
insurance can be used if the condition are met. On top of that, Western Reiki is very simple and
practical to use as soon as you learn, these are the reasons why I have taken Western Reiki into
Gendai Reiki. Furthermore, I have included Western Reiki within the Gendai Reiki system so that it
supports to grow spiritually and self-improvement.
Q3,
I hear "chose your master carefully". On your book, "it is up to you (to improve your Reiki) and it all
starts from after attunement" but I would like to receive attunement (with power) from proper
master as I would pay rather expensive fee for it. In Gendai Reiki, to becoming a master, do they
need to pass the test or something to make sure the masters would have proper Reiki energy? I
think that some places offer anyone to be a master if you pay money. I actually received Reiki before
but I did not feel anything, as Reiki is invisible, I would like to learn from the master with a
"guarantee".
A3,
There is no problem to learn from a master who is qualified properly as the healing ability is not
meant to be given but rather adjusted by a master. After all, the healing ability can be improved by
your own practice. However, it is important to learn from master who has a clear lineage and a
compatibility as you pointed out that it is invisible energy. You should avoid those courses that finish
all 3 level in one day or provide via internet communication or distance. Also you should avoid
masters who do not provide follow ups. Moreover, it is not important that you "do or do not feel the
energy". It would be better you do not to feel such energy like anger, fear, rage that are habitually
exist around us. If you practice the basic 12 hand healing positions -which anyone can do it-, you will
be able to feel necessary energy naturally.
Q4,
Does the basic 12 hand healing position in Gendai Reiki come from Western Reiki, not Traditional
Reiki (Dento reiki)? Do you use the technique because it is easy to use at the beginning? Would it be
difficult to use or feel the energy with Traditional Reiki technique? Are there many people who give
up in Traditional Reiki?
A4,
The basic 12 hand healing position is used in Gendai Reiki Ryoho. As I answered in above question 3,
it is easy to use and anyone can use it. I would advise people that you can choose to use Traditional
Reiki technique (using "Hibiki" technique) when you became advanced and also your ability to "feel"
has been developed.
Q5,
It's about 21day self-healing process, there are various style of course out there and some courses
teach level 1 to 3 in one day and then follows with practicing 21day self-healing, and others require
no self-healing and teach level 1-3 in 3days. Why does Doi sensei teach such styles? Is that because
of your own experience and was it the best way?
A5,
21day self-healing practice is the foundation of all. You are the only one who can heal your own
illness. That is why it starts from there. The techniques of Gendai Reiki are constructed on the basic
concept of "not suspicious (or mysterious), not strange, not difficult".
Q6,
I have been come across rather negative information about Reiki on the internet, for example, Reiki
is "a kind of religious", "a cult" and "a fraud". They seem to be "Reiki bashing" by people who are
not interested in Reiki but I would like to go ahead to ask you this as I could relate to some of their
claims.
All of the masters who learnt Reiki says "may your life be happy" or "hope all of you to be happy".
Then why do they charge money for it? I have been encouraged and also wanted to experience it but
due to the high cost, I have not able to try Reiki in reality. I think that if you "hope all to be happy"
then you could volunteer Reiki without charging money. Something contradicting I thought. Also
someone says that "I wish more and more people could use Reiki in the world" however I can't
decide to learn Reiki as it would cost more than 100,000 yen and it is not cheap at all. Why do you
need to charge money people if you "wish Reiki would fill up our world". I think that it should be free
or as cheap as 10,000yen so that people can access easily. Please tell me why would you have to
charge with expensive fee for just doing attunement?
A6,
It is necessary to pay a price for something valuable. It is easily misunderstood as no value if it's free.
There is a story with Toshihiro Eguchi (1873-1946) who also claimed that "why you should charge
money as Reiki is given by the universe" and left the Usui Reiki society. Then he has taught Hand
Healing Ryoho for free and his members became over 500,000. However, it has been vanished.
There was no income for practitioners as well as masters. This won't last long.
It is the fact that Reiki given by universe for free so if you want to use it for yourself, you don't need
any money for it. However, if you can't do it yourself and want to ask others to help you, then it is
not possible to be free. The person who help you to use Reiki would spent some money and time,
those time that providing healing and conducting seminars and also requires a variety of living costs.
It doesn't make sense if you complain: "why do you charge for petroleum as it is given by universe".
It would be not possible to be free of cost, but if you are not happy about the price, then you
should look for alternatives yourself. If you are not happy about anything, then you can learn
yourself and not learn from others. It is possible to learn Reiki yourself. I published book from
Kodansha call "Jissen Reiki Healing IMyumon (Introduction to Practical Reiki Healing)" which
introducing ways to practice self-healing.
Q7,
In some course website stated that Usui sensei did not pass on anything like "Anshin Ritsumei"-
(calm resignation/attain spiritual peace), is this true?
A7,
I have known such a content of the website. There are some people who claim that "Anshin
Ritsumei was started by Doi sensei or Koyama sensei" as they do not know about the fact that it is
stated so clearly in the pamphlet which is given exclusively to its member of Usui Reiki Ryoho
Gakkai. I have not claim my objection to them though.
If there was no philosophical thoughts of "Anshin Ritsumei" in Usui Reiki, then it would mean only
be "Hand Healing Ryoho" and there is no purpose for Usui sensei to establish his society.
I have been answering your questions however, without understanding whole Reiki, I feel like
answering only in the surface level and you may not understand fully. I hope and pray that you
would learn the important essence of Reiki enough so that you can make a good choice.
