3Introduction
Before you continue surfing through the next
pages of this book, | would like t0 explain to
you few points regarding the purpose of this
book. As mary of you already know, | am a
fessional career have been 10 help other
rmadelers to improve their skills and motivate
them to continue in this great hobby. | am not
‘an, my background isin the arts, psy
aller, and most of my efforts in my pro-
chology, graphic, design and marketing, The
interpretation of the real photos is always a bit
subjective, but it possible to apply objective
analysis to black and white photos in order to
extract usefulolor information. Sometimes
four conclusion of a colormight not corre:
spond with the opinion of 2 war historian or
that of a person who dedicated his fe to the
study of German, tanks It snot my intention
to decide if vehicle should only be painted
in a certain colar, oF to critique any particular
model. The purpose of this book is twofold
First, to provide to modellers a fountain of in
spration and ideas to create new mod
Secondly, to provide entertainment tothe lov-
‘ats of German armour, history and the events
related to Second War World. The paces of
this book were created from the artist point
of view ~ using an objective perspective, We
have made a serious commitment to studying
every aspect of the colors used by the German
army during the final days of the war. Our goal
was 10 provide the reader with a good point
cof reference for the interpretation period pho-
tographs. As you wil see the task of interpre
tation can be at times wcky, and pethans you
may disagree with our findings and draw your
‘own conclusions, We feel that ths type of de-
bate, one based upon critical analyss, can be
very positive for the modeler as we continue
‘to unravel the secrets of the past. The color n=
formation andinterpretations presentedin ths
book ate the result ofthe extensive research as
performed by Carlos Cuesta. The tas, howe
er. is not simple due to information that was
incomplete or misleading, or new evidence
‘would later be found that would confit with
prior conclusions, At times we might believe
that a color is shades lighter due to a coating
lof dust. Other times @ camouflage scheme
right appear as darker color due to reflection.
Many times we only have a poor photograph
to base our interpretations upon. in all cases
cateful study is required, Claudio Ferandez
we form and life the research by creating
the excelent illustrations found throughout
this edition, | also wanted to give you an ex
tra chapter that includes the Paper Panzers, a
subject that has became very popular amongst
‘modellers. with perhaps the exception of the
Maus, a few blueprints and Claudio's imagi
nation ae al that can guide us as we explore
these 1946 panzer. The Paper Panzer section
is totally subjective and cannot be based upon
photos of any actual vehicles, but please keep
in mind that even when using our imagina
tions we can base our painting choices on the
knowledge we have learned by studying the
actual 1945 panzers.
itis abo very important
ence and opinians of people who are involved
with the study of Miltary History. These peo:
ple have direct information from veterans 0
artefacts that show the oxiginal colors of tanks
{and equipment. Mirko Baryert is one of these
people. Mirko has studied in depth the history
‘of the battles that took place in the battles in
Hungary in the closing days of the war, nud
ing interviews with vetarans in whom he has
learned many detas ofthe tanks and crews
In racent conversations with Mirko we spoke
‘about the tank colors in 1945 in which we were
‘able to agree through the actual tank parts and
pint chips the real colors used on German ve=
Fieles during the war From these pages, I went
to give im thanks for al his work researching
{and studying al ofthese aspects in the history
which are important forall modelos.
‘Coming to conclusion on exact colors isnot
‘an easy task even for the an expert, howe
er, if we use the information that exists from
real tank parts and by reading about the com:
plex painting processes used in the factories
and on the batlefield we can create a useful
‘uid for modellers to motivate them to paint
some of their unpainted kits. Now, there are
no excuses for lack of references due to the
lack of color references. | hope that you enioy
