Topic: Korean music

Subtopic: Instrument of Korean Music


Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the characteristics of Korean Music in relation to their


history and culture.

2. Perform the most popular folk song of Korea “Arirang”.

3. Value the importance of Korean Music through applying the


knowledge of musical elements and style.

Resources: Music and Arts of Asia 8 Learners Module pp. 74-77

let’s play a game. This game is

KOREAN MUSIC

Korean’s folk music tradition, with it’s


generous use of bright rhythms and
melodies, offers a more energetic and
capricious contrast to the nation’s of

CHONG-AK means literally “right 9or


correct) music”, Chong-ak also refers
to ensemble music for men high

SOG-AK or MINSOGAK is a category


of Korean Music traditionally

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC OF KOREA

KAYAGUM (GAYAGEUM) is a
traditional Korean zither-like string
instrument with 12 strings, though
some more recent variants have 21 or
other numbers of strings. It is probably
the best known traditional Korean
musical instrument.

GEOMUNGO is a traditional Korean


stringed musical instrument of the
zither family of instruments with both
bridges and frets.

HAEGUM is a traditional Korean


string instrument, resembling a fiddle.
It has a rodlike neck, a hollow wooden
soundbox, and two silk strings, and is
held vertically on the knee of the
performer and played with a bow.

PIRI it is made of bamboo. Its large


reed and cylindrical bore gives it a
sound mellower than that many other
types of oboe.

CHANGGO it is the most widely used
drum used in the traditional music of
Korea. It is available in most kinds,
and consists of an hourglass-shaped
body with two heads made from
animal skin.
