I. Abstract

Social networking sites have created a new social dimension

where individual can increase his social awareness by keeping in

touch with old friends, making new friends, dispensing and acquiring

new data or products and gathering information in other aspects of

everyday life (Nor ZairahAb.Rahim 2014).

Social media is the most common activity of today’s children,

any website that allows social interaction is considered a social

media. It refers to collective online communication channels

dedicated to community based input, interaction, content sharing and

collaboration like Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Google, Instagram, You

tube, etc..

II. Statement of the Problem

This research aims to analyze the impact of social media on the

educational learning and study habits of elementary graders of Gregorio

Paradero Elementary School in school year 2016-2017.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. How did the elementary graders engage themselves in usingsocial

media?

2. In what way do social media become helpful to elementary graders?

2

3. How do social media affect the behaviour and outlook in life of the

viewers?

4. How do social media change the study habits of pupils?

5. How do parents guide their children in choosing the proper types of

social media?

III. Significance of the Study

This study is significant because its findings will for sure be

beneficial, particularly to the additional knowledge of the following.

and implement various programs related on how to handle students

who are affected by social media in their studies.Faculty members.

They will be able to know what further advantages are brought by

social media to the students.

Parents. Since social media is very in demand nowadays in

gaining popularity among elementary graders and others students all

over the world this study will be a great help to them in guiding their

kids for they could learn the tolerance on the right and proper use of

social media for their better learning.

Students. The findings of this research will be beneficial to

the elementary graders in the sense that they could learn the proper
3

use of social media, being responsible pupils even they are exposed

to social media.

Future Researchers. Since the present researchers hope

that the study is easy to follow because of the clear description of

terms, readable figures and tables, as well as ample numbers of

examples and cases to illustrate how the model works in practice,

future researchers will use this study as their guide.

IV. Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study covers the impact of social media to Gregorio Paradero

Elementary School elementary graders enrolled in the school year 2016-

2017 with Internet connection at home. Furthermore, this study does not

cover those pupils who rented Internet in the Internet shop.

VI. Review of Related Studies

Students have great interest in social media, although, providing a

detailed perspective in social media use among college, high school, and

elementary students can produce both positive and negative

consequences, according to a Nielsen Media Research study, in June

2010.

As to the impact of social media on students study habits and

academic performance, a study released by Ohio State University reveals

that students who utilized facebook spend least time on studying and have

lower grades than students who do not use the popular networking sites

(Kalpido, costing, & Morris, 2011). This was also supported by the

research from Johnson and Wales University stated that social media
5

affected student efficiency and grades. That the vast hours consumed in

social media increased distraction of the students to their study habits

which lead to poor academic performance.

On the other hand, the positive aspect of social media is that youth

can utilize them for academic assistance and support (Lusk, 2010). Due

to the ability of social media to provide virtual space to students to explore

their interest with similar individuals, academic support while

strengthening online communication skills and knowledge.

VII. Research Design

This study will utilize the descriptive method because it will present

the observable occurrence of impact of social media to the elementary

graders of Gregorio Paradero Elementary School

Parents shld. monitor the use of social media The use of social media shld. be limited among
grade school learners

on the result, most of the parents agreed that elementary graders should
be monitored in using social media and others agreed that it should be
limited among grade school learners.
The result also shows that social media is useful and should be open to
elementary graders.

IX. Findings

Based on the result and discussion of social media to the elementary

graders of Gregorio Paradero Elementary School the following findings

came out.

1. Elementary graders engage social networking websites at home

using gadgets like smart phone, tablet and laptops. Participants of this

study indicated that social media site they visit the most are facebook,

Instagram, youtube, and google. Socia media is being used by

respondents for communication with family, relatives, teachers, and

friends, downloading and uploading of photos, music and videos. Time

allotments for them by their parents are around half an hour to one hour.
24

2. Respondents of the research state that social media turn to be

positive because it improved their awareness of a product, service, and

organizations around them. Much of the student respondents’ claimed that

they gain more friends thru social media; it improved their communication

skills; and they learned to operate modern technology gadgets at early

age.

3. Majority of parent participants state that social media does not

affect their child behaviour of being responsible. Students’ respondents

data inform us that it gives positive effect for it improve their speaking skills,

writing skills, they learn how to manage new gadgets, and they become

friendly.

4. When it comes to the effect in the study habits of our subject,

answers gathered says 19 out of 25 parents respondent’s declare that

social media does not affect their child study habits.

5. Based on the data gathered, 24 of 25 of our parents’ respondent

allow their children to use social media at home, but the data also state

that parents monitor their child with their use of social media, the site they

are in and the length of time they are allowed to engaged in social

networking website.
25

X. Conclusion

Base on the findings the following conclusions have come up:

1. To communicate with family and friends through facebook and

twitter, and entertainment thru you tube is the most reasons why

elementary graders engage social media.

2. Helpful effect is evident to our elementary student thru improving

their speaking and communication skill, becoming friendly, and awareness

of what is happening in the community where he/she belong.

3. The negative effect of social media was minimal compare to

positive effect our students are getting.

4. When it comes to effect of social media to study habits of our

elementary graders, data says there is parents should not be worried

because the study habits of our students is not affected much by social

media.

5. Elementary graders with family having gadgets and internet at

home allow but monitor their children in visiting social media sites to

assure that only the proper site is allowed to visit and at a minimal time.

XI. Recommendation

The proponents make the following recommendations:

1. Elementary graders must know the limitations in using social

media and must have a commitment with their parents or guardian,

26

assuring them that the use of social networking sites will not affect their

study negatively.

2. Since it become helpful to our pupils, parents should not stop their

children but enhance them to use the website more as an aid for learning.

Like for searching for school works, watching videos prior to school

activities.

3. Although behavioural effect of social media to our students is

minimal, parents should monitor their children with the use of it to avoid

addiction and other negative effect resulting to bad attitude and outlook in

life.

4. For the reason that social media have minimal effect on study

habits of our learners in elementary level, there is no reason to restrain

them for using them rest assure that parents or guardian continue to

monitor their use of it.

5. Parental guidance with the use of social media in choosing or

visiting social networking sites should always be present to assure their

safety in the world of social media.
