If anyone has any ideas of a good place to ride please feel free to express your ideas.

We find ourselves in a rather strange dilemma as most of our members no longer have bikes or are in good health

enough to ride. I know that not being able to ride is not a good feeling as I have experienced this for myself. Rest assured

that you don't have to quit or not participate in Chapter E as you can tag along in your vehicle or provide moral support by

attending meetings, membership drives or suggest places, events and more for the Chapter. We need your knowledge

and suggestions. Help get others especially they youngsters who only want to ride in town to join in our fun. Remember

you are part of our family and we need and appreciate you.

GroupWorks

GroupWorks is a new communication system being shared by all GWRRA members. We are talking nationwide.

Chapters as well as districts will have calendars. You, the member will be able to keep up with what is going on in not just

your area but throughout the entire state. Chapters will be able to email other chapters will very little effort. Districts will

be able to send out messages to not just their district members but to other district as well. Most chapters are aware of

how this system works, but it will take 90 or so days to get it going.

There is a lot of stuff going on , you just have to participate. Thanks a lot, ride safe and have fun.

Hi Everyone,

I recently mad a trip to Missouri to visit my Aunt in the White Plains area actually closer to Dora and
Twin Bridges.

While in the area I enjoyed many good motorcycle roads that curved and ran up and down at the same
time. Lots of fun to be had and the weather was very cooperative. In addition to the roads I stumbled
upon a semi well-kept secret in the Twin Bridges area.

For those of us who do more than eat to ride and ride to eat there is a wonderful place to go river
rafting, canoeing and more. Yes, there is a live band and karaoke for those of us brave enough to sing.
(Not me I assure you!) This is also in the Mark Twain national forest so the wild life is abundant, be
careful as deer cross the road during day and night times. Yes, occasionally there is a bear. I highly
recommend this area.

Twin Bridges Canoe & Campgrounds will be hosting their annual Bike Rally on September 26-28th of 2019
with a poker ride for charity. Hope to see you there!

I speak to you now of the Twin Bridges Canoe & Campgrounds.

Hello Louisiana
The next few months we will be posting information from the Officers Hand Book of GWRRA. This will
help all members better understand what we do for you. This may inspirer one of our members to
become an Officer or other position in GWRRA. Remember, the more you participate, the more fun you
will have. All information will come directly from the GWRRA Officers Handbook.

OFFICER ROLES IN GWRRA

DISTRICT ROLES
The District is extremely important to both the Chapter Team and the Members. They will have some
direct responsibilities to our Members. Some of the responsibilities that were once done at the Chapter
will now shift up to the District.
District Director- Eagle pin with White inset
The District Director will help in coordinating activities throughout the District to meet Chapter and
Members needs and desires. Your focus will be as a Coach. A Coach, by our definition, is the one who
tells you how to do it and where you can get the needed help to get it done well. The problem-solving
approach will be to coach others into a self-discovery after you have shared ideas with them. Then guide
the results.
The District Director will communicate to all Members in their District through a modified newsletter,
due out quarterly to all Members on the ARL. Communication through email, social media, Facebook, etc.
as needed, with activities and some news of the District. The focus of communication is to encourage
participation in activities.
Our District Director will have regular (monthly at least) conversations with the Chapter Directors to
help keep them focused and to guide them as to where they can get the answers, including from the rest
of the District Team. It is recommended that the communication is done through a video conference call.
The District Director will also attend the video or conference calls scheduled by GWRRA President.
Our District Director will also coach and facilitate their team to be certain that activities are planned
and assist as needed when a Team Member needs help.
The District Director will be certain that all new Members and Prospective Members are contacted by
the District MEP and guided toward the appropriate Chapter that meets their needs. Focus must be on
Member growth, retention and riding.
If the District puts on a rally, they will coordinate all of their Team and volunteers to put on a rally
focused on fun, socialization, rides and education that fits each District’s needs.
Overall, the District Director role is the coordinator of fun, riding, knowledge opportunity and Chapter
interaction/socials.
District Educator- Eagle pin with Red inset
The District Educator will promote the program of Rider Education. They will write articles to promote
the program for Chapter Newsletters. They will be the reporting arm of activities (N6) to Team
GWRRA. They will gather activities through the District planning and Chapter newsletters and calendars.
All request for training in the District happen with coordination with the District Educator and
University Coordinator. Paperwork for the levels program will process through this position.
The District Educator will work together with the District Ride Coordinator for the benefit of the Rider
Education program each following their specific responsibilities.
They will attend the conference calls monthly with both the Director of Rider Education and the
District either by computer video call or phone.
The District Educator will work with the District University Coordinator to assess the education needs
in the District. The goal is quarterly education events in the District that can be the District rally,
multi-Chapter events or District education events. The Educator will also assess and set up Ride Courses
as needed. Working together and including the Ride Coordinator, they will create fun events with a ride
to the destination. The District Director will support, and the District MEP will provide some of the fun
activities to be included in the day/weekend events. If the District puts on a rally, the Educator will
work with the Team and volunteers to put on a rally focused on fun, socialization, rides and education
that fits each District’s needs. This and the education events will be the place to really promote the
Rider Education Levels Program.
District Ride Coordinator- Eagle pin with Red inset
The District Ride Coordinator will plan District rides of all types throughout the year. Their audience is
not only the Chapters but all Members in the District. Using social media (Facebook, Groupworks, Google
Calendar, GWRRA Events Page, etc.) the Ride Coordinator will establish a calendar of available rides,
open to all and open to all bikes. They will work with the Chapter Ride Coordinators to ensure their rides
are included on the District calendar. If possible, archive all the rides to create a GWRRA Member
Electronic and/or print Ride book each year.
The District Ride Coordinator will create riding areas within the District and designate an Area Ride
Coordinator. The Area Ride Coordinator will communicate all area rides to the District Ride Coordinator
for inclusion on all District and Chapter event Calendars. You may also want to include on the GWRRA
Events page. http://gwrra.org/events/
The District Ride Coordinator will be at least a Level 3 and a Road Captain.
The District Ride Coordinator will reach out to all the Members in the District to invite them on rides
and work toward inclusion of those who do not regularly participate with a Chapter or the District to
have them come out to the rides and possible the Education events.
The District Ride Coordinator will work together with the District Educator for the benefit of the Rider
Education program each following their specific responsibilities. The District Ride Coordinator will
encourage Members toward safety and safe riding techniques. They will also share with the Members
how to participate in the Rider Education Program.
The District Ride Coordinator will assist the District Educator and the District University Coordinator
with District Education events. Their specific responsibility will be to create rides in the event and
possible rides at the events. They will work with Chapter Ride Coordinators to plan the ride in. The goal
is quarterly education events in the District that can be the District rally, multi-Chapter events or
District education events. The District Director will support, and the District MEP will provide some of
the fun activities to be included in the day/weekend events.
They will attend the conference calls monthly with both the Director of Rider Education and the
District either by computer video call or phone. They will schedule regular calls with the Chapter Ride
Coordinators.
If the District puts on a rally, the Ride Coordinator will suggest ride in routes as well as rides during the
rally. They will also work with the District Educator for the promotion of the Rider Education program.
They will work with the Team and volunteers to put on a rally focused on fun, socialization, rides and
education that fits each District’s needs.
District University Coordinator- Eagle pin with Gold inset
The District University Coordinator, along with the District Educator, will assess the training needs in
the District. They will gather requests from Chapters of their training request and put joint events on
with Chapters, where possible, to enjoy the training as well as the social event
University Coordinators will make the recommendations if additional ITCP Certified Trainers or
Certified Instructor Trainers are needed in the District.
The District goal is to have quarterly education events in the District. That can be the District rally,
multi-Chapter events or District education events. The Educator will also assess and set up Ride Courses
as needed. Working together and including the Ride Coordinator, they will create fun events with a ride
to the destination. The District Director will support, and the District MEP will provide some of the fun
activities to be included in the day/weekend events. They will attend the conference calls monthly with
both the Director of the University and the District either by computer video call or phone.
If the District puts on a rally, the University Coordinator will work with the Team and volunteers to put
on a rally focused on fun, socialization, rides and education that fits each District’s needs.
District Membership Enhancement Coordinator - Eagle pin with Blue inset
The District Membership Enhancement Coordinator will help the Chapter MEC with fun ideas and
encourage them to participate with programs that would be beneficial to the Chapter.
The District MEP must focus on contacting all New and Prospective Members each month to welcome
them to GWRRA and to find out what they are looking for with their Membership. Along with the
District Director, they will suggest to the Member the Chapter or Riding group that would best meet
their needs. They will report all their contacts monthly. They will also follow any program, task or focus
they are asked to do from the Director of Membership Enhancement or the MEP Team.
They will attend the conference calls monthly with both the Director of MEP and the District either by
computer video call or phone. They will also schedule regular calls with the Chapter Membership
Enhancement Coordinators.
They will also work on contacting Membership in the District, and along with the Ride Coordinator,
Educator and Director to plan fun education days or weekends. They will also help plan fun events inviting
all Members in the District to join in. They will guide each Chapter in reaching out to those prospect and
new Members faithfully every month.
If the District puts on a rally, the MEP Coordinator will work with the Team and volunteers to put on a
rally focused on fun, socialization, rides and education that fits each District’s needs
District Motorist Awareness Coordinator- Eagle pin with Orange inset
The District Motorist Awareness Coordinator will work with the District and Chapter Teams to take full
advantage of opportunities to share information with the public. They will create sample kits for bikes
shows; bike rallies; street fairs; other public events where Members can be out and sharing information
with the public. They will also create a sample package for presentations at schools and other locations
when those opportunities arise. They are the resource for the District and Chapter for materials and
guidance. They are encouraged to create District Motorist Awareness events where they can, keeping
the District Director informed and involved in any decisions.
District Treasurer- Eagle pin with Green inset
The District Treasurer will keep the finances of the District. They will give monthly updates on the
financial status of the District as well as reconcile the checking account. They will assist the District
each year in establishing the financial needs to the District. They will also assist the Chapters, coaching
them with needed financial requirements. They will prepare annually the District financial report and the
IRS 990 reporting. They will collect financials and 990 from each Chapter, review and process them per
GWRRA Guidelines. They will submit the annual District financial to TEAM GWRRA Director of Finance
for review and acceptance. Use of the Excel spreadsheet for finances, found on Oconnect, is highly
encouraged.
District Newsletter modification: The communications from the District needs to be for sharing what
is new in Programs, information from GWRRA, and District news. It is more of a bulletin and can be done
monthly or semi-monthly but it‛s audience is the Chapter Officers and Team. It might be a good idea to
focus a piece quarterly to all Members in the District for encouragement to join the District at events,
education events or rallies.

IF YOU DON’T USE IT,
YOU LOSE IT!
This summer, we along with 5 other gold wings, headed out on a 22 day, 6000+ mile ride that we called our
Continental Divide Ride. We traveled due north to Canada, then left to Jasper. Alberta, south to Santa Rosa,
NM and east to Monroe. Most of us had ridden together previously and all had experience in GWRRA Team
Riding techniques. This is what makes us feel more comfortable and safer on our rides. It didn’t take long to
discover we were rusty, very rusty in our skills. As the ride leader, I made several sudden turns that weren’t
effectively communicated beforehand, causing near misses and missed turns. Our intervals were sometimes
too far apart and at other times too close. When we would pull into a parking lot instead of staying together
until out of harms way and adequate space was attained, some would separate to find their own parking. All
things indicating that we were out of practice. Then one afternoon, reality snuck in.

Riding south from Calgary to the States, we were passed by a group of 6 Canadian Gold Wings. They were
riding in a tight, staggered formation, spoke to us briefly on the CB, merged back into the right lane in front
of us much like synchronized swimmers. It was a beautiful sight. How come they looked so good and we
didn’t? Well, they were all on their home turf, probably had not ridden 4000 miles, they were all two wheel-
ers and they did not have trailers. I asked myself, “How can we look like that?” The answer, we can’t. We
were all trikes each with a loaded trailer. The Team Riding Manual says that we are to ride 1 second behind
the bike immediately in front of us, if staggered, and 2 seconds behind the bike in our lane. So, I asked my-
self, “Are trikes really staggered?” A trike always takes 2 of the 3 tracks in a lane. So, we should be 2 sec-
onds behind the bike in front. Maybe more while pulling trailers in other than good conditions. At a cruising
speed of 70 miles per hour you are traveling approximately 100 feet per second. At a 2 second interval, with
6 bikes (5 gaps), your group would stretch out 1000 feet. Longer than 3 football fields. Can you imagine
what is going through the mind of that 18 wheeler driver coming up in the left lane when the drag bike se-
cures the left lane for a team riding maneuver and he sees 6 bikes spread over 1000 feet slowing him down
and keeping that much longer from a day’s end? I retired from a trucking company. I know what he is think-
ing and it’s not nice. So, what do we do?

The Team Riding Manual mentions 2 other group riding styles. There is “Mass Riding” which is what you
generally see at poker and toy runs when all kinds of bikes are participating. It is generally undisciplined and
not recommended. There is also “Leisure Riding”. This is defined as traveling with a group of people you
know with some agreed upon techniques and ground rules. Many of these can come from the Team Riding
style; staggering, distance, speed, knowledge of the route, etc. Each rider is responsible for his own ride.
Our group fit the Leisure style more so than the Team style. When our speed slowed down and we were go-
ing through communities and cities, we were able to revert back to team concepts as not to get lost or separat-
ed. I can hear someone saying right now, “People are going to get all up in your formation!” Yes they will.
But, that happens in Team Riding as well, especially at entrance and exit ramps. The two second interval is
not designed to keep people out of your formation, it is to provide you with adequate reaction time for what
happens in front of you. Remember, the Motorist Awareness slogan is “Share the Road”, not “Get Off My
Road”.

Is it time to renew safe group riding skills in your chapter? I’ll bet it is! You find a place and a time and we
will get you the instructors. Call Mike Stevenson, Joan Partigianoni or me today.

District Directors,

It is no secret that our Membership numbers have been declining. This decline which has been out-pacing our
recruitment efforts has put many of our Chapters in peril. The Chapter legacy of being there for the next GWRRA
Member is in question.

None of us want to see a Chapter close and we cannot control in many instances the reasons for Membership loss.

We need to ask ourselves, what can we do to grow our membership? What can we do to help our Chapters re-vitalize
themselves while encouraging the Chapters to do a little more to preserve their legacy?

I believe we have an opportunity to accomplish just that, and you the District Directors, are the catalyst to encourage
that to happen. I often hear our Membership say and I will paraphrase, hopefully we can do this or do that. As we all
know, “Hope Is Not A Strategy.” We need to plan. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

There seems to be some confusion as to the Staff Position of the Chapter Motorist Awareness Coordinator. Some
believe the position was eliminated and some believe it kind of went away due to lack of interest. The reality is that
every Chapter needs and can have a Motorist Awareness Coordinator.

In case you have not thought of this, that Chapter Staff Position is now critical to the life of the Chapter.

A Motorist Awareness Event gives us an opportunity to potentially meet and recruit a motorcyclist who may be in their
4-wheel vehicle at the time they come upon our event. All Motorist Awareness Events are a golden opportunity for
recruiting and should be planned with that in mind. Even when we are just out riding or sitting in a restaurant, we are
educating the public to be aware of us. That said, the best opportunity for us to educate the public and recruit some
new Members could be a planned quarterly event. It does not take a lot of folks to accomplish this. Naturally, the bigger
the attendance, the greater the impact.

A Chapter Motorist Awareness Coordinator working with the Membership Enhancement Coordinator is a recipe for
being of service to our community while enhancing our opportunity to meet and recruit new Members.
So, District Directors, I am asking for your help in encouraging your Chapter Directors to ask that special person(s) in
their Chapter to take on this vital role and help the Chapter to survive. If they already have a Coordinator, perhaps a few
more events could be planned.

We have a very strong National Motorist Awareness Team dedicated to supporting your District efforts and the efforts
of the Chapters.

As always, Sherry and I appreciate everything you do and in advance, thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Jere and Sherry Goodman
