1. Prove that every subgroup of an abelian group is abelian.

2. Let H = {a + bi | a, b ∈ R, ab ≥ 0}. Prove or disprove that H is subgroup of C under

addition.

3. Let H = {A ∈ GL(2, R) | detA is an integer power of 2}. Show that H is a subgroup

of GL(2, R).

4. Prove that H = | a 6= 0 is a subgroup of GL(2, R).
0 1

a 0
5. Let H = | a and b are nonzero integers . Prove or disprove H is a subgroup
0 b
of GL(2, R).

6. Show that for n > 2, the order of the group Un is even.

7. Suppose H and K are subgroups of a group G such that o(H) = 12 and o(K) = 35.
Find o(H ∩ K). Generalize.

8. Let o(G) = 8. Show that G must have an element of order 2.

9. Let G be an abelian group and let H = {a ∈ G | o(a) is finite}. Show that H is a

subgroup of G.

10. Let a be a fixed element of a group G and let

H = {x ∈ G : xa2 = a2 x} and K = {x ∈ G : xa = ax}.
Show that H is subgroup of G and K is subgroup of H.

11. Prove or disprove each of the following statement:

(i) U8 is cyclic.
(ii) (Q, +) is cyclic.
(iii) If every proper subgroup of a group is cyclic, then G is a cyclic group.

12. Let G be an abelian group of order pq with (p, q) = 1. Suppose that there exist a, b ∈ G
such that o(a) = p, o(b) = q. Show that G is cyclic.

13. Let G be a cyclic group of order 6 generated by a. Let H = ha2 i and K = ha3 i. Show
that G = HK.
