Inventor: Daniel Halladay

When was is invented: The first windmill manufactured in the


United States was designed by Daniel Halladay, who began
inventing windmills in 1854 in his Connecticut machine shop.

A windmill is a structure that converts the energy of wind


into rotational energy by means of vanes called sails or
blades.

It's purpose: The majority of modern windmills take the form


of wind turbines used to generate electricity, or wind pumps
used to pump water, either for land drainage or to extract
groundwater.
