ABSTRACT

One of factors of incidence of skin disease is poor personal hygiene. The aim of this
study is to determine the effect of personal hygiene on female students’ skin disease in Nurul
Cholil Islamic boarding school, Bangkalan, Madura. This research is quantitative descriptive
research. The population of this study is 1000 respondents with samples of 89 students who were
chosen by cluster random sampling. The instruments used were personal hygiene questionnaire
and observation sheet about skin diseases. The results of the study show that 45 respondents had
positive personal hygiene, and 47 respondents had experienced skin disease. Chi-Square
statistical test which was conducted obtain ρ-value = 0,000, α = 0,05. It means that there is an
influence between personal hygiene towards the incidence of students’ skin disease in Nurul
Cholil Islamic Boarding School, Bangkalan, Madura. The respondents in this study have poor
personal hygiene behaviors such as frequently exchanging clothes with fellow friends, not
wearing their own towels, bed is being used together, and not changing clothes after bathing. It is
suggested for the students to maintain personal hygiene better thus the skin disease does not
occur.
