5) Is the pool open?

A. Yes, the pool is open.

B. No, the pool is not open. The

Answers and Explanations

1) D
At the beginning of the story, Sam says, “Today is very hot.” We can
understand from this that the weather is hot. Therefore (D) is correct. Sam
wants to get cool because the weather is hot. Therefore (B) is incorrect. The
story does not provide information to support choices (A) and (C), so they are
incorrect.

2) B
At the beginning of the story, Sam says, “I want to be cool.” Therefore (B) is
correct. The story does not provide information to support choices (A) and
(C). Therefore they are incorrect. Sam is hot, but Sam wants to become cool.
Therefore (D) is incorrect.

3) B
Sam wants to be cool. Sam asks, “How can I get cool?” Then Sam says,
“Wait...I know! I can go to the pool. The pool is cool.” We can understand
from this that since the pool is cool, Sam thinks that he can become cool by
going in the pool. Therefore (B) is correct.

The library (A), school (C) and work (D) may all be places that are cool, but in
the story Sam thinks that the pool is the place to cool off. The story does not
mention any of those places. Therefore answer choices (A), (C), and (D) are
incorrect.

4) D
In the middle of the story, Sam wants to find out if the pool is open. Sam asks,
“Where is the phone?” Then Sam says, “I need to call the pool. I need to find
out if the pool is open or closed.” The phone rings. “‘Hello. My name is
Andrea. I am at the pool. Can I help you?’” Sam asks Andrea if the pool is
open and Andrea says yes. We can understand from this that Sam has called
Andrea to find out if the pool is open. Therefore (D) is correct.

The story does not provide information to support choices (A), (B), and (C).
Therefore they are incorrect.

5) A
When Sam calls Andrea, he asks, “Is the pool open?” Andrea replies, "Yes.
The pool is open." Therefore (A) is correct. The pool is open, so it is not
closed. Therefore (B) is incorrect.

Answers and Explanations

1) C
In the middle, the story says, “someone is at the door of” Anna’s house. Then,
“Anna opens the door. What does Anna see? Anna sees a dog.” We can
understand from this that a dog was at Anna’s door. Therefore (C) is correct.
The story does not provide information to support choices (A), (B), and (D).
Therefore they are incorrect.

2) A
At the end of the story, “Anna's mom sees the wet dog.” Then Anna asks,
"Can we keep it?" Next, Anna’s mom says, "Yes, we can.” We can
understand from this that Anna keeps the dog. Therefore (A) is correct. The
story does not provide information to support choices (B), (C), and (D).
Therefore they are incorrect.

3) B
In the middle, the story says, “The dog is wet.” Therefore (B) is correct. The
dog is wet, not dry. Therefore (A) is incorrect.

4) C
There is no information in the story about how strong the dog is. This
eliminates option (I). In the middle of the story, Anna says to the dog, “You
are very cute!" This supports option (II). In the middle of the story, it says,
“The dog is small.” This supports option (III). Therefore (C) is correct.

5) D
At the beginning of the story we learn that “it is Thursday.” Therefore (D) is
correct. The story does not provide information to support choices (A), (B),
and (C). Therefore they are incorrect.

Questions:

alligator? I. It has long legs.
II. It has a long tail.
A. an amphibian III. It has sharp teeth.
B. a mammal A. I only
C. a reptile B. I and II
D. a fish C. II and III
D. I, II, and III

3) What do alligators eat? 4) According to the story, most alligators

I. birds are
II. plants
III. fish A. big and long

A. I only C. small and weak
B. I and II D. fat and funny
C. I and III
D. I, II, and III

5) The opposite of sharp is 6) What can the reader discover about

Florida from the passage?
A. dull
B. big A. It is far away.
C. soft B. It is a very big place.
D. smart C. It has rivers and swamps.
D. It is the best place to see alligators.
Answers and Explanations

1) C
The beginning of the story says, “An alligator is a very big reptile.” Therefore,
(C) is correct. The story does not contain information to support choices (A),
(B) and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

2) C
In the middle, the story says “An alligator has a long tail, short legs, strong
jaws, and sharp teeth.” Since the alligator has short legs, this eliminates
option (I). The alligator has a long tail. This supports option (II). The alligator
has sharp teeth. This supports option (III). Therefore (C) is correct.

3) C
In the middle, the story says that alligators eat “fish, mammals and birds.”
Since alligators eat birds, this supports option (I). The story does not say that
alligators eat plants. This eliminates option (II). Since alligators eat fish, this
supports option (III). Therefore (C) is correct.

4) A
At the beginning, the story says, “An alligator is a very big reptile.” The story
also says, “Alligators can grow to be more than 15 feet long.” We can
understand from these statements that alligators are big and long. Therefore
(A) is correct. The story does not contain information to support choices (B),
(C) and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

5) A
Sharp means having an edge that can cut or pierce. The story tells us that
alligators eat fish, mammals and birds, and it would be difficult to eat those
things if the alligators’ teeth could not cut or pierce. Something that is dull is
blunt and lacks sharpness. Something that is dull cannot cut things very well.
Therefore (A) is correct.

Answer choice (B), big, and answer choice (D), smart, are both unrelated to
“an edge.” Therefore (B) and (D) are incorrect. The word soft, which is
answer choice (C), means not hard. While something that is sharp is usually
not soft, soft does not mean blunt. Therefore (C) is incorrect.

6) C
The story claims “alligators live in rivers and swamps” and “there are lots of
alligators in Florida.” If there are lots of alligators in Florida, there must be
rivers and swamps because that is where alligators live. Thus, (C) is correct.

We do not know whether Florida is far away because we do not know where
the narrator is. Therefore (A) is incorrect. Although the story tells us that there
are a lot of alligators in Florida, that does not necessarily mean that Florida is
a very big place. Therefore (B) is incorrect. Although the story tells us that
there are lots of alligators in Florida, we do not know if that makes the
alligators easy to see. We also do not know if there are better places to see
alligators. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

_______________________________________________________________________
Answers and Explanations

1) C
Paragraph 2 tells us, “Jaime lives in a house in the country.” Therefore (C) is
correct. The story does not contain information to support answer choices (A),
(B), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

2) A
In paragraph 3, we learn, “Jaime has a dog. The dog is named Go-Go.”
Therefore (A) is correct. The story does not contain information to support
answer choices (B), (C), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

3) D
To walk across something means to go from one side to the other. In the
story, we can understand that Jaime and Go-Go have walked from one side
of the field to the other because they jump over the fence. We know the
fence is on “the other side of the field.” Therefore (D) is correct.

The story does not contain information to support answer choices (A), (B),
and (C). Therefore they are incorrect.

4) B
In paragraph 5, the story says, “Jaime and Go-Go walk out of the house.”
This is the first thing that Jaime and Go-Go do in the story. Therefore (B) is
correct.

Near the end of the story, Jaime starts to walk home. This happens at the
end, not the beginning. Therefore (A) is incorrect. There is no information in
the story about fishing in a river. Therefore (C) is incorrect. In paragraph 7,
Jaime tells Go-Go, “We are going to the top of that mountain.” To get to the
top of the mountain, Jaime would have to climb the mountain. This could
seem like a right answer. However, this happens after Jaime walks out of the
house. This happens in the middle of the story. Also, he does not ever climb
the mountain. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

5) A
Paragraph 15 tells us, “Jaime starts to walk home.” This happens at the end
of the story. Therefore (A) is correct.

In paragraph 7, Jaime tells Go-Go, “We are going to the top of that mountain.”
To get to the top of the mountain, Jaime would have to climb the mountain.
This could seem like a right answer. However, this happens after Jaime walks
out of the house. This happens in the middle of the story. Therefore (B) is
incorrect. There is no information in the story about fishing in a river.
Therefore (C) is incorrect. There is no information about Jaime playing a
game with Go-Go. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

6) D
In the middle of the story, Jaime tells Go-Go, “We are going to the top of the
mountain.” The next sentence tells us, “Go-Go looked nervous.” We can
understand that Go-Go is nervous because he doesn’t want to climb the
mountain. Therefore (D) is correct.

The story does not contain information to support answer choices (A), (B),
and (C). Therefore they are incorrect.

7) B
In paragraph 6 we learn “the mountain is very tall. The top of the mountain is
in the clouds.” Jaime has fun thinking about climbing the mountain. But in
reality, it would be very hard for him to climb a very tall mountain with Go-Go.
It would also be very dangerous. Jaime will still get tired climbing the
mountain tomorrow. Go-Go will still be nervous about climbing the mountain
tomorrow. Therefore (B) is correct.

There is no information in the story that Jaime will be less tired climbing
tomorrow. There is no information that Go-Go will be less nervous. It is not
likely they will climb the mountain tomorrow. Therefore (A) is incorrect.

Answers and Explanations

1) C
in paragraph 1 we learn that Bella is hiding with her puppy, so she cannot be
looking for him. This eliminates option (I). In paragraph 4, we find out that
“Bella always hides when she’s scared.” This supports option (II). In
paragraph 2, we learn that Bella is hiding because she does not want to go to
the doctor. This supports option (III). Therefore (C) is correct.

2) C
In paragraph 1, we learn that Bella is hiding behind the couch with her puppy,
Sir. Therefore (C) is correct. The story does not contain information to support
choices (A), (B) and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

3) A
In paragraph 3, Bella’s mother calls “Where are you?” to Bella. This lets us
know that Bella’s mother is looking for Bella. Therefore (A) is correct. The
story does not contain information to support choices (B), (C) and (D).
Therefore they are incorrect.

4) D
In paragraph 6, we learn Bella’s mother finds Bella behind the sofa, letting us
know that (D) is correct. In paragraph 4, we learn that she looks “in the
closet,” “in the kitchen,” and “next to the bookcase,” but still cannot find Bella.
Therefore (A), (B) and (C) are incorrect.

5) D

________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________
Answers and Explanations

1) B
At the beginning of the story, Olaf says, “I live in a big city.” Therefore (B) is
correct. The story does not provide information to support answer choices (A)
and (C). Therefore they are incorrect. A big city might be busy, and the story
says that Olaf lives “on a busy road.” But the story also says that Olaf lives in
a “big city,” not a busy town. This means (D) is incorrect.

2) B
In the middle of the story, Olaf says, “The dogs make a lot of noise.” This
supports option (I). In the middle of the story, Olaf also says that the dogs
“are like the trucks,” “the cars,” and “the buses” because “all of them are
loud.” We can understand from this that the buses also make noise. This
supports option (II). Airplanes are not mentioned in the story at all. This
eliminates option (III). Therefore (B) is correct.

3) D
At the beginning of the story Olaf says, “At night and during the day, cars go
by. Buses go by. Trucks go by.” We can understand from this that trucks go
by at night. Therefore (D) is correct.

The story does not say anything about bikes, so (A) is incorrect. In the middle
of the story, we learn that people keep their cats and dogs “outside in their
yards at night.” However, cats and dogs do not go by like cars, trucks and
buses do. This means (B) and (C) are incorrect.

4) C
Daytime is when most people do activities or go places like work and school.
Since most people are busy or gone during the day, they do not seem to
notice the noise from the trucks, buses, and dogs. Therefore (C) is correct.

Olaf says that his neighborhood is noisy in the day and at night, so it cannot
be quiet. Therefore (A) is incorrect. People usually get sleepy at night, not
during the day. Also, being sleepy would not make people unable to hear the
noise. This makes (B) incorrect. There is no information in the story to
support the idea that people do not hear well during the day. That would not
make sense. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

5) C
It does not say anywhere in the story that the road is dirty. This eliminates
option (I). Olaf says that cars, buses and trucks go by on the road and that
“at night, the noise makes it hard to sleep.” Olaf also says that there are dogs
on his road. He says that “the dogs make a lot of noise.” Using this
information, we can understand that the road is noisy. This supports option
(II). At the beginning of the story, Olaf says, “I live on a busy road.” This
supports option (III). Therefore (C) is correct.
6) C
In the middle of the story, it says that a dog named Simba barks more than
the others. We learn that Mr. Lucas thinks that Simba “is a very bad dog. He
keeps me up at night.” Olaf says, “The two men argue about Simba’s barking
almost every day.” Using this information, we can understand that Simba, the
barking dog, makes Mr. Lucas angry. This means (C) is correct.

The story does not contain information to support answer choices (A), (B),
and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

7) D
At the end of the story, we learn that “Simba is Mr. Cheek’s dog.” We also
learn that Mr. Lucas is bothered by Simba’s barking and that “the two men
argue about Simba’s barking almost every day.” From this we can understand
that Mr. Lucas and Mr. Cheek argue almost every day. Therefore (D) is
correct.

The story does not contain information to support answer choices (A), (B),
and (C). Therefore they are incorrect.

8) D
We know that Simba’s barking keeps Mr. Lucas up at night. When Mr. Lucas
and Mr. Cheek argue, Mr. Lucas says, “You should take your dog inside at
night.” Using this information, we can understand that Mr. Lucas thinks that
he will not hear the dog if Mr. Cheek takes Simba inside at night. If Mr. Lucas
does not hear the dog, he will be able to sleep at night. This makes (D)
correct.

The story does not contain information to support answer choices (A), (B),
and (C). Therefore they are incorrect.

9) A
We know that Simba’s barking keeps Mr. Lucas up at night. When Mr. Lucas
and Mr. Cheek argue, Mr. Cheek says, “You should not sleep with your
windows open.” We can understand from this that Mr. Cheek thinks that Mr.
Lucas would not be able to hear Simba barking at night if he closed his
windows. If Mr. Lucas could not hear Simba barking, he would be able to
sleep at night. This means (A) is correct.

The story does not contain information to support answer choices (B), (C),
and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

10) B
In the middle of the story Mr. Lucas says, “That is a very bad dog,” about
Simba. This means (B) is correct. The story does not contain information to
support answer choices (A), (C), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

11) B
In the middle of the story, Olaf says, “Mr. Lucas lives next door to Mr. Cheek.”
This makes (B) the correct answer.

Olaf says that Simba is one of the animals that live on his road. Simba is Mr.
Cheek’s dog. This tells us that Mr. Cheek lives on Olaf’s road. However, the
story does not say where Mr. Cheek lives on the road, so we do not know if
Mr. Cheek lives next door to Olaf. Therefore (A) and (C) are incorrect. The
story tells us that Mr. Cheek lives next door to Mr. Lucas, so he can’t live next
door to no one. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

12) D
In the middle of the story, Olaf says, “The dogs are like the trucks,” “the cars,”
and “the buses,” because “all of them are loud.” Later in the story Olaf says
that the dog Simba “barks more than others do.” We can understand from this
that Olaf thinks that both Simba and the buses are noisy, so (D) is correct.

We do not know if Simba barks at the buses, so (A) is incorrect. The story
does not say that Simba and the buses argue. Therefore (B) is incorrect. At
the beginning of the story, Olaf does say that buses go by at night, but the
only thing we learn about Simba is that he barks a lot. We do not know if he
runs down the street at night. This means (C) is incorrect.

13) D
Throughout the story, Olaf describes how noisy the big city is. He explains
that the noise comes from vehicles like cars, trucks and buses and from dogs.
He does not say that something could be done to quiet the noise. Instead, he
says, “This is what living in a big city is like.” Therefore (D) is correct.

Olaf does not say that people could ride bikes to help the noise in the city, so
(A) is incorrect. Mr. Lucas wants Mr. Cheek to put Simba indoors at night so
that Mr. Lucas will not hear the dog barking. However, Olaf does not say that
putting Simba inside would help the noise of the city. This means (B) is
incorrect. Olaf does not say that people could walk everywhere to help the
noise in the city. Therefore (C) is incorrect.

________________________________________________________________________
Answers and Explanations

1) A
The passage talks about what birds are like. Therefore (A) is correct. In
paragraph 5, the passage does tell us about two kinds of birds that cannot fly.
But it does not tell us why they cannot fly. Therefore (B) is incorrect. In
paragraph 2, we learn that birds are the only animal with feathers. But it does
not tell us where they have feathers. Therefore (C) is incorrect.

2) B
Paragraph 4 says, “Most birds can fly.” Therefore (B) is correct. The passage
does not contain information to support answer choices (A) and (C).
Therefore they are incorrect.

3) C
In paragraph 5, we learn that “turkeys and penguins are two kinds of birds
that cannot fly.” Therefore (C) is correct. The passage does not contain
information to support answer choices (A) and (B). Therefore they are
incorrect.

4) A
Paragraph 1 tells us, “A bird is a kind of animal.” Therefore (A) is correct. Blue
jays and penguins are both kinds of birds. But not all birds are blue jays or
penguins. Therefore (B) and (C) are incorrect.

I am very excited. My dad gives me a hug.

"You won!" he says.

My dad and I go home.

My dad tells my mom about my ribbon.

She cries.

A. because Tess has a twin A. She is at work.

B. because there are two horses B. She is at the show.
C. because another horse looks C. She is at home.
very similar to Twin D. She is with Tess’ father.
D. because Tess feels the same as
Twin when she rides her

5) Why does Tess's father yell? 6) What prize does Tess win in the
horse show?
A. He is angry.
B. He needs help. A. The Gold Star
C. He is surprised. B. Winner’s Prize
D. He is excited. C. new riding boots
D. First Prize

7) What color ribbon does Tess get? 8) How does Tess's mom feel about
the ribbon?
A. green
B. blue I. worried
C. purple II. happy
D. red III. proud
A. I only
B. I and II
C. II and III
D. I, II, and III
Answers and Explanations

1) A
In paragraph 2, Tess tells us that she rides her horse “in shows.” This
supports option (I). While horse shows may commonly be held at school, the
story does not give specific information about where the “shows” are held.
This eliminates option (II). Horse shows could also be held on a farm, but the
story does not give specific information about where the “shows” are held.
This eliminates option (III). Therefore (A) is correct.

2) B
In paragraph 4, Tess is at the horse show. Tess’s horse “runs, jumps, and
dances.” In order to do this, the horse moves quickly and in many different
directions. To stay on the horse, Tess needs to “hold on!” Otherwise, Tess will
fall off the horse. Therefore (B) is correct.

(A) is incorrect because it is the horse who dances, not Tess. The story does
not contain information to support choices (C) and (D). Therefore they are
incorrect.

3) D
At the end of paragraph 6, Tess tells us that “I feel like the horse and I are the
same when I ride her.” Tess means that she feels like she is part of Twin, or
connected to her in a very close way. Answer choice (D) best reflects this
idea. The story does not contain information to support choices (A), (B) and
(C). Therefore they are incorrect.

4) A
In paragraph 7, Tess tells us that her mother is not at the horse show. This is
because she “has to work.” Answer choice (A) provides this reason. The story
does not contain information to support choices (B), (C) and (D). Therefore
they are incorrect.

5) D
In paragraph 8, Tess’s father is at the horse show. He “claps,” “yells,” and
“smiles.” Here, Tess’s father yells because he is excited (D) and wants to be
heard by Tess, who is far away. Therefore (D) is correct.

Sometimes people yell because they are angry, but he is not angry (A). The
reader knows this because he is smiling. He would not smile if he was angry.
Thus, (A) is incorrect. The story does not contain information to support
choices (B) and (C). Therefore they are incorrect.

6) D
In paragraph 9, a man announces the winners of the show, stating, “First
Prize goes to Tess and Twin [Tess’s horse].” According to the story, the name
of her prize is “First Prize.” Therefore (D) is correct.
Although Tess does win a prize, the Gold Star (A) and the winner’s prize (B)
are incorrect because the name of her prize is “First Prize.” Tess does not win
new riding boots (C), so (C) is incorrect.

7) B
In paragraph 10, Tess tells us that the announcer gives her the “blue” ribbon.
Therefore (B) is correct. The story does not contain information to support
choices (A), (C) and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

8) C
At the end of the story, Tess’s father shows Tess’s mother the ribbon that
Tess won in the horse show. The story does not provide information to
support the idea that Tess’s mother is worried. This eliminates option (I).
Tess’s mother cries and gives Tess “a big hug.” She cries because she is
happy; she is crying tears of joy. This supports option (II). In addition, Tess’s
mother tells Tess that her “hard work is showing.” The “hard work” she is
referring to must be the time she spends practicing to become a better horse
rider. When someone is happy or satisfied as a result of the work someone
else has done, that person is proud. This supports option (III). Therefore (C)
is correct.

________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________
Answers and Explanations

1) B
In paragraph 1, the story says that “Machines need gas to work.” The correct
answer is B.

2) A
The story says that cars, buses, and airplanes all need gas. They need gas
because they are machines. So cars, buses, and airplanes are all machines.
Machines are made of parts. The parts work together. A frog (B) is not a
machine. A person (C) is not a machine. A bus (A) is a machine. Therefore,
(A) is the correct answer.

3) B

“a lot of” = “much”

For example:

I have a lot of homework. = I have much homework.

Tommy has a lot of money. = Tommy has much money.
Jane gets a lot of mail. = Jane gets much mail.

So, “a lot of” is another way to say “much.” Therefore, (C) is correct.

“Green Grass”
Reading Comprehension – Short Stories
Directions: Read the story. Then answer the questions below.

Plants need sunlight and water to make their own food.

You can do an experiment to test if this is true.
Place a bucket over a patch of green grass.
After a few days, lift the bucket.
You will see that the grass is not as green anymore.
If you leave the bucket in place for a week, the grass will become
very dull.
This happens because the grass cannot make food in the dark.
Remove the bucket. In a few days, the grass will start turning green again.

Questions:
1) What is the main point of this 2) What is an experiment?
passage?
A. a way to grow grass
A. Buckets are bad. B. a way to test an idea
B. Plants need sunlight. C. a way to use a bucket
C. Grass is not pretty when it is
dull.

3) What happens after a few days? 4) What is the opposite of dull?

A. The grass turns brown. A. bright

B. The grass gets very dull B. brown
C. The grass is not as green C. sunlight

5) According to the passage, how 6) What might happen if the bucket

long does it take for the grass to stays on the grass for a very long
become dull? time?

A. a month A. The grass might die.

B. a week B. Flowers might start to bloom.
C. a few days C. The grass might start growing
again.
Answers and Explanations

1) B
In paragraph 1 we learn that “plants need sunlight” (B). The passage
describes what happens when plants do not get sunlight. The main idea of
the passage is the fact that plants need sunlight. Therefore (B) is correct.

Although the bucket keeps the grass from staying green, it is not the bucket
itself but the lack of sunlight which is bad. Therefore (A) is incorrect. Grass
may not be as pretty when it is dull, but that opinion is never stated in the
passage and therefore cannot be the main idea. Therefore (C) is incorrect.

2) B
In paragraph 2 we learn that an experiment will “test if this is true.” We know
that “this” means the idea from the previous sentence that “plants need
sunlight.” An experiment is a way to test this idea. Therefore (B) is correct.
The experiment is not a way to grow grass but a way to hurt grass. Therefore
(A) is incorrect. Although the experiment does use a bucket, you could test
this idea using something other than a bucket. Also, you could do another
experiment to test a different idea. Therefore (C) is incorrect.

3) C
In paragraphs 4 and 5, we learn that after a few days, you can lift the bucket
and see the “grass is not as green anymore.” Therefore (C) is correct. The
passage does not ever say that the grass turns brown. Therefore (A) is
incorrect. Paragraph 6 does say that the grass “will become very dull,” but
only after “a week,” not a few days. Therefore (B) is incorrect.

4) A
dull (adjective): lacking brilliance or brightness.

After a few days, the grass is “not as green anymore.” This is the same thing
as say the grass is not as bright green. Bright is the opposite of dull.
Therefore (A) is the correct answer.

When the grass gets “dull,” it gets less green and, we can understand, more
brown. Brown is similar to dull, not opposite. Therefore (B) is incorrect.
Sunlight is an example of something bright, but it is a thing, not a description,
so it cannot be the opposite of dull. Therefore (C) is incorrect.

5) B
In paragraph 6 we learn that after “a week, the grass will become very dull.”
Therefore (B) is the correct answer. The story does not contain information to
support choices (A), (C) and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

6) A
If “plants need sunlight” and “the grass cannot make food in the dark,” then
the grass might die if the bucket stays on a very long time, because grass
needs sunlight and food to live. Therefore (A) is the correct answer.
Flowers will not start to bloom because flowers are plants, and plants all need
sunlight. Therefore (B) is incorrect. Likewise, the grass will not start growing
again if it does not have food and sunlight. Therefore (C) is incorrect.

Answers and Explanations

1) C
The story does not say that Griffin plays tennis. This eliminates option (I).In
paragraph 5, we learn that Griffin “plays soccer with his friends.” This
supports option (II). In paragraph 1, we learn that Griffith plays the violin.
This supports option (III). Therefore (C) is correct.

2) C
Paragraph 1 tells us, “Griffin plays the violin.” Paragraph 2 tells us “he takes
lessons after school on Tuesdays.” Therefore (C) is correct. The story does
not contain information to support answer choices (A), (B), and (D). Therefore
they are incorrect.

3) A
In paragraph 3, we learn that “Mr. Thomas tells Griffin to practice every day.”
Therefore (A) is correct.

Griffin actually does practice “most days,” but that is not what Mr. Thomas
tells him. Therefore (B) is incorrect. Griffin only takes lessons on Tuesdays,
but he should practice every day. Therefore (C) is incorrect. The story does
not contain information to support (D). Therefore (D) is incorrect.

4) B
According to paragraph 4, “Griffin practices his violin on most days.”
Therefore (B) is correct.

In paragraph 3 we learn that “Mr. Thomas tells Griffin to practice every day,”
but that is not in fact what Griffin does. He only practices “most days.”
Therefore (A) is incorrect. The story does not contain information to support
(C). Therefore (C) is incorrect. Griffin takes lessons on Tuesdays, but he
practices “most days.” Therefore (D) is incorrect.

5) A
At the end of the story, we learn that Griffin “loves playing the violin.”
Therefore (A) is correct. The story does not contain information to support
answer choices (B), (C), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

6) C
The story does not say anything about Griffin loving to read. This eliminates
option (I). In paragraph 8, we learn that Griffin “loves fixing clocks.” This
supports option (II). In paragraph 8, we also learn that Griffin “loves playing
soccer.” This supports option (III). Therefore (C) is correct.

7) C
In paragraph 3, we learn, “Griffin’s violin teacher is Mr. Thomas.” We can
understand that this means Mr. Thomas teaches Griffin how to play the violin.
Therefore (C) is correct. The story does not contain information to support
answer choices (A), (B), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.
8) D
In paragraph 6, Griffin’s parents tell him, “You are a boy of many talents.”
They go on to tell him, “That means you are good at doing many things.” We
can understand from this information that having many talents means being
good at doing a lot of things. Therefore (D) is correct.

The story does not contain information to support answer choices (A), (B),
and (C). Therefore they are incorrect.

9) C
In paragraph 5, we learn, “On the days Griffin does not practice his violin, he
plays soccer with his friends or fixes old clocks for fun.” Using this
information, we can understand that Griffin sometimes does not practice the
violin because he is busy doing other things. Therefore (C) is correct.

The story does not contain information to support answer choices (A), (B),
and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

He does not come with me on the airplane.
He likes to play airplane with me.
We play airplane when I get home.
We run around the yard. We wave our arms in the air. We make airplane noises.

Questions:

1) Who is telling this story? 2) What does Bristol like to do in the

airplane?
A. Bristol
B. a little boy A. look out the window
C. a pilot B. run in the yard
D. a friend C. sit in the back
D. be the pilot

3) Bristol points at something outside 4) Why doesn't the little boy like to fly?
the window. What does she point
at? A. because he is very young
B. because he is very little
A. a giraffe C. because he doesn’t like
B. her dad airplanes
C. a cloud D. because he is afraid to be up
D. a tree high
Answers and Explanations

1) C
A pilot is telling this story. At the beginning of the story, the narrator (the
person who tells the story) says, “I fly airplanes for a living. I am a pilot.” The
narrator is the same person throughout the story. Therefore (C) is correct.
The story does not contain information to support answer choices (A), (B),
and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

2) A
In paragraph 2, the narrator talks about being in the airplane. He says that
Bristol, his daughter, “likes to look out the window of the airplane.” Therefore
(A) is the correct answer. The story does not contain information to support
answer choices (B), (C), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

3) C
In paragraph 2, Bristol looks at the clouds outside the airplane. According to
the narrator, she “thinks the clouds look like animals,” and points at “one” of
them. Here, it is important to understand that, although the cloud looks like an
animal (a giraffe), is it not actually an animal. The cloud is still a cloud.
Therefore, when the narrator says that Bristol points at “one” of them, she is
not pointing at an animal, but rather, she is pointing at a cloud. Therefore (C)
is the correct answer.

In paragraph 2, Bristol points at a cloud and says, “I see a giraffe!” Here she
means that the cloud looks like a giraffe. It is not really a giraffe. Therefore (A)
is incorrect. The story does not contain information to support answer choices
(B) and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

4) D
In paragraph 3, the narrator talks about his “little boy.” He tells us that his little
boy “does not like to be up high.” For this reason, the little boy does not like to
come with his father (the pilot and narrator) in the airplane. Therefore (D) is
correct.

We do not know if the boy is “very young.” We also do not know if this is the
reason he does not like to fly. Therefore (A) is incorrect. Although the narrator
says, “I also have a little boy,” we do not know if he is “very little.” We also do
not know if this is the reason why he does not like to fly or not. Therefore (B)
is incorrect. We do not know if the boy likes airplanes or not; the narrator
does not talk about this. All we know is that the boy “does not like to be up
high.” Therefore (C) is incorrect.

Answers and Explanations

1) B
In paragraph 2, Eric tells us that he has 2 sisters. Therefore, (B) is correct.

2) D
In paragraph 3, Eric tells us that his mother is 40 years old. Mother is another
word for mom. Therefore (D) is correct.

3) C
In paragraph 4, Eric says, “my father is an engineer.” Father is another word
for dad. Therefore, (C) is correct.

Even though Eric’s dad builds bridges, he is not a construction worker.

Therefore, (D) is incorrect.

4) B
In paragraph 5, Eric says, “My dog’s name is Paw.” Therefore, (B) is correct.

5) C
In paragraph 5, we learn that Paw is a “brown dog.” Therefore, (C) is correct

6) A
In paragraph 2, Eric tells us that he has two sisters. Eric says, “Rachel is 18
years old. Carrie is 10 years old.” Carrie is younger than Rachel. This makes
Carrie Eric’s younger sister. Therefore (A) is correct.

7) B

correct. The passage does not contain information to support choices (A) and
(B). Therefore they are incorrect.

2) B
Paragraph 2 tells us, “North Carolina is a state.” Therefore (B) is correct. The

Hill. From this information, we can understand that the city of Chapel Hill is in
the state of North Carolina. In paragraph 2, the speaker tells us that the

11) What lesson did Maddy learn?

A. Practice makes perfect.

B. Do not ride a scooter with pink shoes.
C. Be careful what you wish for.
D. School is fun with new shoes.
Answers and Explanations

1) D
At the beginning, the story says, “One day, Maddy gets a hole in the shoes
she likes best while riding her scooter. They are pink with hearts and a Velcro
tab. Now she needs new shoes.” We can understand from this that Maddy
needs new shoes because she got a hole in the shoes with the pink hearts.
This means (D) is correct.

The story does not provide information to support answer choices (A) and
(B). Therefore they are incorrect. Maddy did not lose her favorite shoes. She
got a hole in them, so (C) is incorrect.

2) B
At the beginning, the story says, “Maddy gets a hole in the shoes she likes
best while riding her scooter.” This makes (B) correct.

At the beginning, we learn that Maddy loves to “ride her skateboard,” but she
does not get a hole in her shoe while riding her skateboard. This means (A) is
incorrect. Maddy also “loves to jump rope,” but she does not get a hole in her
shoe while jumping rope, so (C) is also incorrect. The story does not provide
information to support (D), so it is incorrect.

3) C
At the beginning, the story says, “Maddy gets a hole in the shoes she likes
best while riding her scooter. They are pink with hearts and a Velcro tab.” We
can understand from this that Maddy got a hole in the shoes with pink hearts.
This makes (C) correct.

In the middle of the story, “Maddy sees a pair of purple sneakers with orange
laces. She sees a pair of red sandals with dots. She sees a pair of green flip-
flops.” Maddy sees these shoes when she is shopping for new shoes, so
these are not the shoes that have a hole. Therefore (A), (B), and (D) are
incorrect.

4) B
In the middle of the story, while Maddy is in the store, she “sees a pair of
purple sneakers with orange laces. She sees a pair of red sandals with dots.
She sees a pair of green flip-flops. She wants the purple sneakers.” We can
understand from this that Maddy wants the purple sneakers, so (B) is correct.

The pink shoes with the hearts are the shoes with the hole in them, so (A) is
incorrect. The green flip flops are other shoes that Maddy sees at the store,
but she does not want those shoes, so (C) is incorrect. Maddy also sees the
red sandals with dots, but Maddy does not want those shoes either. This
makes (D) also incorrect.

5) D
Near the beginning, the story says, “The shoe area is crowded, and there is a
long wait. Maddy does not mind.” We can understand from this that Maddy
feels okay about waiting at the crowded store. This makes (D) correct.

In the middle of the story, Maddy “is very happy” about getting the new
sneakers, but she is not happy about the wait, so (B) is incorrect. The story
does not provide information to support answer choices (A) and (C).
Therefore they are incorrect.

6) A
At the beginning, when Maddy goes to the department store, “the store is
filled with people looking for shirts, dresses, pants and toys.” Since the store
is filled with people, we can understand that Maddy sees a lot of people.
Therefore (A) is correct.

The story does not provide information to support answer choices (B), (C),
and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

7) A
In the middle of the story, Maddy’s mother tells Maddy, "If we buy the purple
sneakers, you must learn to tie them before you can wear them to school.”
We can understand from this that Maddy must learn how to tie the laces
before she can wear the sneakers to school. Therefore (A) is correct.

The story does not provide information to support answer choices (B) or (C).
Therefore they are incorrect. Early in the story, we learn that Maddy goes to
the store on Saturday. At the end of the story, Maddy “gets to wear her new
shoes to school on Monday.” Tomorrow means the day after today, and
Maddy wore her new shoes two days after she got the shoes. This means (D)
is incorrect.

8) B
promise (verb): to give assurance that you will do something in the future.

In the middle of the story, Maddy’s mother says that Maddy must learn to tie
the laces of the purple sneakers before Maddy may wear them to school.
Maddy says “I will! I promise!” Since Maddy may only wear the shoes if she
can tie them and Maddy says that she will learn, we can understand that
Maddy is saying that she definitely will learn to tie the laces when Maddy says
“I promise.” Therefore (B) is correct.

Want means to desire or wish for. While Maddy does want to learn to tie,
Maddy’s promise that she will learn to tie the laces is a statement of what
Maddy believes surely will happen. This means (A) is incorrect. Cannot
means unable to. Since Maddy is assuring her mother that she is going to
learn to tie the laces, cannot is the opposite of promise, so (C) is incorrect.
Might means that something could happen but will not happen necessarily.
Since Maddy is assuring her mother that she certainly will learn to tie the
laces, (D) is incorrect.
9) D
In the middle of the story, Maddy wants the sneakers with the laces. “Maddy's
mother thinks. She does not want to tie Maddy's laces each morning before
school.” Since Maddy’s mother does not want to tie Maddy’s shoes each
morning, (D) is correct.

Maddy’s mother takes her to the store to buy new shoes, so Maddy’s mother
does want to buy Maddy new shoes. This means (A) is incorrect. Although
Maddy sees the green flip-flops, Maddy only asks her mother for the purple
sneakers. Since Maddy’s mother does not give an opinion on the green flip-
flops, (B) is incorrect. The story does not provide information to support (C).
Therefore it is incorrect.

10) B
After Maddy learns how to tie the laces, Maddy says, “I did it.” Maddy says
this “with a big smile.” Since Maddy has a big smile, Maddy is probably
happy. This supports option (I). Since Maddy has worked hard to learn to tie
her shoes, and exclaims that she did it, Maddy must be proud that she has
learned to tie them. This supports option (II). Since Maddy wanted to learn
how to tie the laces and she did learn, it is unlikely that Maddy feels nervous
after learning to tie them. This eliminates option (III). Therefore (B) is correct.

11) A
In the story, Maddy picks out new shoes that she wants very much. In order
to wear the shoes, Maddy must learn how to tie the laces. She has to practice
for two days to learn how to tie her laces. Since Maddy has reached a goal
that was important to her through hard work and practice, Maddy has learned
that practice makes perfect. Therefore (A) is correct.

Maddy did get a hole in her pink shoes while riding a scooter, but the main
idea of the story is that Maddy got to wear her new shoes after putting in hard
work to learn how to tie the laces. This means (B) is incorrect. Maddy is
happy with the shoes that she wanted, so Maddy did not learn to be careful
what you wish for. This means (C) is incorrect. Maddy does not learn that
school is fun in this story, so (D) is incorrect.

Answers and Explanations

1) A
In the middle of the story, it says, “Paul makes beef soup for dinner. He puts
in cubes of beef, carrots, and onions.” This tells us that Paul puts in onions,
which supports option (I). The story does not say that Paul puts potatoes in
the soup. This eliminates option (II). The story does not say that Paul puts
cucumbers in the soup. This eliminates option (III). Therefore (A) is correct.

2) C
At the beginning of the story, it says, “Paul’s wife knows that Paul loves to
read cookbooks. She decides to get him one for his birthday.” We can
understand from this that Paul’s wife gave him the cookbook. Therefore (C) is
correct.

Since the story says that “she” got Paul a cookbook for his birthday, we know
that Paul did not buy it himself. Therefore (A) is incorrect. At the beginning of
the story, we learn that Paul has a wife, not a girlfriend. Therefore (B) is
incorrect. The story does not say anything about Paul’s friends. Therefore (D)
is incorrect.

3) D
At the beginning of the story, Paul tells his wife that “he will try to make a new
recipe for three days in a row.” This means (D) is correct.

Although Paul likes to read cookbooks, the story does not say anything about
Paul becoming a chef. This makes (A) incorrect. While the story does tell us
that Paul picks cucumbers and tomatoes from his garden, Paul does not say
that he will grow his own food. Therefore (B) is incorrect. Paul says that he
“will try to make a new recipe for three days in a row,” not cook every recipe
in a week. This means (C) is incorrect.

4) B
In the middle of the story, it says, “On Monday, Paul makes blueberry
pancakes for breakfast.” Therefore (B) is correct. The story does not say
anything about Sunday. This means (A) is incorrect. The story says that Paul
“makes beef soup” on Tuesday. This means (C) is incorrect. The story says
that Paul “makes a tomato salad with cucumbers and onions” on Wednesday.
This makes (D) incorrect.

5) B
In the middle of the story, it says, “He gets the blueberries from the farmers’
market. Therefore (B) is correct.

Paul uses cubes of beef in the soup, but the story does not tell us where Paul
got the cubes of beef. This means (A) is incorrect. At the end of the story, it
says that Paul “picks the cucumbers and tomatoes from his garden.”
Therefore, the tomatoes come from the garden, not the farmers’ market, so
(C) is incorrect. At the end of the story, it says that Paul “picks the cucumbers
and tomatoes from his garden.” Therefore, the cucumbers also come from the
garden, not the farmers’ market. This means (D) is incorrect.

6) C
At the end of the story, it says that Paul “picks the cucumbers and tomatoes
from his garden.” This means (C) is correct.

Although Paul’s wife got him the cookbook, the story does not say that Paul’s
wife gave Paul tomatoes and cucumbers. Therefore (A) is incorrect. The story
does not mention a store at all. This means (B) is incorrect. In the middle of
the story it says that Paul “gets the blueberries from the farmers’ market.” The
story does not say that Paul got tomatoes and cucumbers from the farmers’
market. This makes (D) incorrect.

7) C
At the end of the story, it says that Paul “makes a tomato salad with
cucumber and onions.” Then it says that Paul “likes this dish best.” We can
understand from this that Paul likes the tomato salad best. Therefore (C) is
correct. The story does not contain information to support answer choices (A),
(B), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

8) A
In the middle of the story, it says that Paul does not use cream in the beef
soup because “Paul does not like cream.” This means (A) is correct.

The story does say anything about a store, so (B) is incorrect. Although Paul
does get cucumbers and tomatoes from the garden, Paul does not get cream
from the garden. Therefore (C) is incorrect. Although Paul buys blueberries
from the farmers’ market, Paul does not buy cream at the farmers’ market.
This makes (D) incorrect.

9) C
In the middle of the story, it says that the beef soup recipe “calls for cream,
but Paul does not like cream. He uses water instead.” We can understand
from this that Paul used water in the beef soup recipe instead of cream.
Therefore (C) is correct. The story does not contain information to support
answer choices (A), (B), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

10) C
At the end of the story, it says that Paul made “a tomato salad.” Then, the
story says Paul liked the tomato salad best and “it was also the easiest for
him to make.” This means that the tomato salad was the easiest recipe for
Paul to make, so (C) is correct. The story does not contain information to
support answer choices (A), (B), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

Answers and Explanations

1) D
At the beginning of the story, Mimi says, “Today is a rainy day.” We can
understand from this that it is rainy. At the end of the story, Mimi says, “The
clouds are gray. The clouds are big.” We can understand from this that it is
cloudy. Therefore (D) is correct.

Since we know that it is rainy and there are big, gray clouds, it is not hot and
sunny. Therefore (A) is incorrect. We know that it is cloudy, but the story does
not say that it is cool. Therefore (B) is incorrect. The clouds might make it
dark, but it is rainy, not snowy. Therefore (C) is incorrect.

2) B
At the beginning of the story, Mimi says, “Today is July 5, 2010.” Therefore,
(B) is correct. The story does not provide information to support choices (A),
(C), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

A. He dreams. II. his family
B. He sleeps. III. his future
C. He eats. A. I only
D. He drinks. B. I and II
C. II and III
D. I, II, and III
Answers and Explanations

1) A
The first line of the story says, “Dieter loves to run.” Therefore (A) is correct.

Dieter loves running because it “gives him the best dreams,” but the story
does not say that Dieter loves to dream. Therefore (B) is incorrect. When
running makes Dieter’s body hurt, “Dieter starts thinking.” The story does not
say that Dieter loves thinking. Therefore (C) is incorrect. In paragraph 4, it
says, “No one likes it when it hurts.” Therefore (D) is incorrect.

2) B
In paragraph 4, it says, “No one likes it when it hurts.” People do not like bad
things. Since no one likes it, hurting must feel bad. Therefore (B) is correct.
People like good things. Since no one likes hurting, it does not feel good.
Therefore (A) is incorrect.

3) A
In paragraph 3, when Dieter’s body starts to hurt, Dieter “starts dreaming.”
The last line of the story says, “Dieter runs and dreams.” Therefore (A) is
correct. The story does not contain information to support answer choices (B),
(C), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

4) B
In paragraph 3, it says Dieter “dreams about his job,” “home,” “family,”
“friends,” and “the world.” The mention of “job” supports options (I). The
mention of “family” supports option (II). The story does not say that Dieter
dreams about the future. This eliminates option (III). Therefore (B) is correct.

Answers and Explanations

1) B
The first line of the story reads, “Yana is my mother.” Later, we learn, “My
name is Sasha.” Yana is Sasha’s mother. Therefore (B) is correct. The story
does not contain information to support (A), (C), and (D). Therefore they are
incorrect.

2) A
In sentence 4, Sasha says, “We live in a red house.” Therefore (A) is correct.
Sentence 5 tells us that Sasha’s family’s car is blue. From this we know that
the car is blue, not the house. Therefore (B) is incorrect. The story does not
contain information to support (C) and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

3) C
Sentence 3 reads, “My name is Sasha.” This lets us know that Sasha is telling
the story. Therefore (C) is correct. The story does not contain information to
support (A), (B), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

4) D
In the middle of the story, Sasha tells us, “We sit in the yard at night.” When
Sasha says “we,” she means herself and her family. Therefore (D) is correct.
The story does not contain information to support (A), (B), and (C). Therefore
they are incorrect.

5) B
In the middle of the story, Sasha says, “Father says the stars make him
happy.” Therefore (B) is correct. The story does not contain information to
support (A), (C), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

6) D
Near the end of the story, Sasha says, “My mother sings.” Sasha tells us in
the next sentences, “The baby stops crying. We think he heard my mother’s
pretty song.” The baby stops crying after Sasha’s mother sings. Therefore (D)
is correct. The story does not contain information to support (A), (B), and (C).
Therefore they are incorrect.

7) D
Near the end of the story, Sasha says, “I like to think about how many stars
are in the sky.” Because Sasha cannot know how many stars are in the sky,
we can understand that this means she likes to guess how many stars there
are. Therefore (D) is correct. The story does not contain information to
support (A), (B), and (C). Therefore they are incorrect.

8) C
The last line of the story is, “We all smile.” When Sasha says “we,” she
means her mother, her father, and herself. Therefore (C) is correct. The story
does not contain information to support (A), (B), and (D). Therefore they are
incorrect.

B. a place where people talk about are there
business C. because her hair is cut
C. a gift shop D. because her nails are purple
D. a place to get hair and nails
done
Answers and Explanations

1) D
At the beginning of the story, we learn that Talia is getting ready for a dinner
celebration. In paragraph 11, learn that Talia has arrived at a restaurant.
Using this information, we can understand that Talia’s celebration takes place
at a restaurant. Therefore (D) is correct. The story does not contain
information to support choices (A), (B), and (C). Therefore they are incorrect.

2) A
At the beginning of the story, we are told that Talia is getting ready for a
dinner celebration. The story tells us, “She wants to look very nice for her
night out.” Talia wants to look nice because she is celebrating a special
occasion. Therefore (A) is correct. The story does not contain information to
support choices (B), (C), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

3) C

The passage tells us how Talia gets ready for her special celebration. In
paragraph 2, we learn, “First, she gets her hair cut at a salon.” Therefore (C)
is correct. Although Talia does pick out a dress, get her nails painted, and go
out to eat, all of these things happen after she gets her hair cut. Therefore
answer choices (A), (B), and (D) are incorrect.

4) B
In paragraph 3, we learn that Talia has her nails painted pink. In paragraph 4,
we learn, “Talia is not happy with the color. She asks the woman to change
the color to purple.” Because Talia is not happy with pink nails, she has her
nails painted purple. Therefore (B) is correct.

It is true the pink nails would not match Talia’s purple dress, but Talia does
not know what outfit she is wearing when she gets her nails painted.
Therefore (A) is incorrect. The story does not contain information to support
choices (C), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

5) C
Talia tries on several outfits before she decides which one to wear. Paragraph
10 tells us, “she wears the purple dress.” Therefore (C) is correct. Although
Talia tries on the light blue pants (A), brown skirt (B) and green top (D), she
does not wear them out. Therefore, (A), (B), and (D) are incorrect.

6) C
In the passage, parents is another word for Talia’s mother and father. In
paragraph 12, we learn that Talia “hugs her mother and father.” So we can
understand that Talia hugs her parents when she sees them. Therefore (C) is
correct.
Talia’s sister smiles at her. Therefore (A) is incorrect. The story does not
contain information about anyone saying hello. Therefore (B) is incorrect. She
gives her grandfather a kiss. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

7) B
In paragraph 14, we learn, “Talia’s sister gives her a big smile.” Therefore (B)
is correct. The story does not contain information to support choices (A), (C),
and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

8) C
In the last paragraph Talia tells her family and friends that she feels great that
they are at the restaurant for her “last night as a teenager.” A person is a
teenager from the ages of 13 to 19. If it is Talia’s last night as a teenager, we
can understand that she is still 19 and will turn 20 the next day. Therefore (C)
is correct. The story does not contain information to support choices (A), (B),
and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

9) D
Paragraph 2 explains, “A salon is a place where people go to get their hair
and nails done.” Therefore (D) is correct. The story does not contain
information to support choices (A), (B), and (C). Therefore they are incorrect.

10) B
In the last paragraph, Talia says, “I feel great because all of you are here.”
Using this information, we can understand that when Talia says “all of you”
she means her friends and family. Therefore (B) is correct. The story does not
contain information to support choices (A), (C), and (D). Therefore they are
incorrect.

Answers and Explanations

1) B
At the beginning of the story, it says, “Gustavo works far away from his
home.” It also says, “He drives a car to work.” We can understand from this
that Gustavo drives a car to work. Therefore (B) is correct.

The story does not say anything about a bus. Therefore (A) is incorrect.
Gustavo’s little girl likes to ride horses, but Gustavo does not ride a horse to
work. Therefore (C) is incorrect. The story does not say anything about a
train. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

about many things.” We can understand from this that Gustavo thinks while
he drives. Therefore (C) is correct. The story does not contain information to
support answer choices (A), (B), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

This eliminates option (I). In the middle, the story says while “Gustavo
drives,” he “thinks about his wife.” This supports option (II). In the middle,
the story also says Gustavo “thinks about his little boy” while Gustavo
drives. This supports option (III). Therefore (C) is correct.

is incorrect. In the middle, the story says that Gustavo’s little boy plays
fireman. Therefore (B) is incorrect. In the middle, the story says that
Gustavo needs to water the flowers. Therefore (D) is incorrect.
6) B

is incorrect. In the middle, the story says that Gustavo’s little girl rides
horses. Therefore (C) is incorrect. In the middle, the story says that Gustavo
needs to water the flowers. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

7) C
Gustavo’s wife, not Gustavo, milks the cows. This eliminates option (I). At
the end of the story, “Gustavo thinks of the things he needs to do when he
gets home.” First, the story says Gustavo “needs to cut the grass.” This
supports option (II). Next, the story says Gustavo “needs to water the
flowers.” This supports option (III). Therefore (C) is correct.

8) D
At the end of the story, we learn that Gustav “wants to sit with his wife.” This
supports option (I). Gustavo also “wants to read a story to his little girl.”
This supports option (II). Gustavo also “wants to play a game with his little
boy.” This supports option (III). Therefore (D) is correct.

9) C
In the middle of the story, it says Gustavo “needs to cut the grass. It is too
long.” We can understand from this that Gustavo needs to cut the grass
because the grass is too long. Therefore (C) is correct.

Answers and Explanations

1) C
In the middle of the story we learn that Jethro believes “he has a good chance of
getting a job at the technology company.” Therefore (C) is the correct answer. The
passage does not provide information to support answer choices (A), (B), and (D).
Therefore they are incorrect.

2) C
The story does not say that Jethro talked to his dad. This eliminates option (I). The
story does not say that Jethro called Mr. Stone. This eliminates option (II). In the
beginning of the story, we learn that Jethro takes a shower, shaves, brushes his
teeth, cuts his fingernails, combs his hair, and puts on a new suit. This supports
option (III). Therefore (C) is correct.

3) C
In the middle of the story we are told that Jethro arrives at the interview at 9:45 and
is 15 minutes early. That lets us know that the interview is at 10:00. Therefore (C) is
the correct answer.

If the interview was at 9:30, Jethro would have been 15 minutes late for the
interview. Therefore (A) is incorrect. If the interview was at 9:45, Jethro would have
been on time for the interview. Therefore (B) is incorrect. If the interview was at
10:15, Jethro would have been 30 minutes early. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

4) B
confident (adjective): sure of oneself; having no uncertainty about one’s own
abilities, correctness, successfulness, etc.

In the middle of the story we learn that Jethro is confident. The reason for this is that
“Jethro graduated at the top of his class in college.” Because he graduated at the
top, he must have done well. If he did well, he is sure of his abilities. Confident
means sure of oneself. Therefore (B) is the correct answer.

While being early might help one feel confident, it is not the same as feeling
confident. Therefore (A) is incorrect. Being nervous or worried means the opposite
of being confident. Therefore answer choices (C) and (D) are both incorrect.

5) D
In the middle of the story, we learn that Jethro is nervous because “many people are
interviewing for the same job.” Therefore (D) is the correct answer.

We know that Jethro graduated at the top of his class. Therefore (A) is incorrect.
The story does not tell anything about Jethro’s speaking ability. Therefore (B) is
incorrect. The story does not tell us how Jethro feels about wearing a suit. Therefore
(C) is incorrect.

6) D
competition (noun): the rivalry offered by a competitor for supremacy, a prize, etc.
In the middle of the story it says, “Many people are interviewing for the very same
job. There is a lot of competition.” When people all want the same job, they are
going after the same thing. Therefore (D) is correct.

Jethro is getting ready to go out, but that is not related to the statement that “there is
a lot of competition.” Therefore (A) is incorrect. Jethro is going to a job interview, but
that is more specific than the idea of competition. There can be competition in many
other things, such as sports. Therefore (B) is incorrect. Jethro does feel he is good
enough, because he believes he has a “good chance” of getting the job. Still, the fact
that many other people want the same job means there is competition. Therefore (C)
is incorrect.

7) A
At the end of the story, it says that after Jethro arrives early, he sits and “thinks
about what he has learned to do in an interview.” When Jethro is called in to Mr.
Stone’s office, he successfully does the things he has thought about while waiting.
Therefore (A) is the correct answer.

While Jethro waits to see Mr. Stone, he does think about what he has learned to do
in an interview, and one of these things is “speak clearly.” However, getting there
early does not help him speak clearly. Therefore (B) is incorrect. The passage does
not provide information to support answer choices (C) and (D). Therefore they are
incorrect.

8) D
At the end of the story, it says that Jethro has learned to: “Look people in the eye.
Give a firm handshake. Speak clearly.” Therefore (D) is the correct answer.

In the middle of the story, we learn that Jethro is positive, because he thinks he has
a good chance of getting the job. However, this is not something he has learned to
do in an interview. Therefore (A) is incorrect. The passage does not provide
information to support answer choices (B) and (C). Therefore they are incorrect.

9) B
In the middle of the story we learn that Jethro, “graduated at the top of his class in
college.” Using this information, we can understand that Jethro did well in school.
Therefore (B) is the correct answer.

A bad economy is a reason to be negative. Therefore (A) is incorrect. Jethro’s dad

losing his job is also a reason to be negative. Therefore (C) is incorrect. The story
does not tell us whether or not Jethro knows Mr. Stone. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

10) D
We know that Jethro wants to have a successful interview, so we can infer that all of
the things he does in preparation are intended to make a good impression on the
interviewer. Towards the end of the story it says that Jethro has learned to look
people in the eye during an interview. This supports option (I). He also puts on a
new suit. This supports option (II). At the beginning of the story, we learn what
Jethro has done to groom himself for his interview: he showers, shaves, brushes his
teeth, cuts his fingernails and combs his hair. This supports option (III). Therefore
(D) is the correct answer.

11) A
The more clearly a person speaks, the easier he or she is to understand. At the end
of the story we learn that Jethro has learned to “speak clearly” in an interview.
Therefore (A) is the correct answer.

Answer choices (B), (C), and (D) are all things that might help make a good
impression on the interviewer, but they do not help the interviewer understand what
the person is saying. Therefore they are incorrect.

12) C
prompt (adjective): done, performed, delivered, etc., without delay; on time.

In the middle of the story, it says that Jethro arrives for the interview early because
“he realizes the importance of being prompt.” Jethro “does not want to be late.” From
this we can understand that the meaning of prompt must be related to being on time.
Therefore (C) is the correct answer.

Answer choices (A), (B), and (D) are not related to time. Therefore they are
incorrect.

5) What color is Max? 6) Who is singing?

A. Max is orange. A. Tito

B. Max is brown. B. Max
C. Max is black. C. Lilly
Answers and Explanations

1) B
The first line of the story says, “Ben has two cats.” Therefore (B) is correct. The
story does not provide information to support answer choices (A), (C), and (D).
Therefore they are incorrect.

2) B
The story does not say whether the cats are big or not. This eliminates option
(I). In the middle of the story, it says that the cats “are beautiful.” This
supports option (II). Therefore (B) is correct.

3) A
At the beginning of the story it says, “Tito has blue eyes.” Therefore (A) is
correct. No animal in the story has red eyes. Therefore (B) is incorrect.
According to the story, “Max has green eyes,” not Tito. Therefore (C) is
incorrect.

4) C
In the middle of the story we learn that Ben has a bird. The story says, “Her
name is Lilly.” Therefore (C) is correct. At the beginning of the story we learn
that Max and Tito are the names of Ben’s cats, not his bird. Therefore (A) and
(B) are incorrect.

5) C
At the beginning of the story we learn that “Max is black.” Therefore (C) is
correct. No animal in the story is orange. Therefore (A) is incorrect. The story
says that Tito is brown, not Max. Therefore (B) is incorrect.

6) C
At the end of the story, it says that Max and Tito “see who is singing. It is
Lilly!” From this we can understand it is Lilly who is singing. Therefore (C) is
correct. The story says, “Max and Tito try to discover who is singing.” If they
are trying to find out who is singing, then neither of them can be the one who
is singing. Therefore (A) and (B) are incorrect.

Answers and Explanations

1) C
At the beginning, the story says, “It is 6:15 a.m.” We can understand from this
that it is 6:15 in the morning. Therefore (C) is correct. The story does not
provide information to support answer choices (A) and (B). Therefore they are
incorrect. The letters "a.m." after 6:15 mean that it is morning. It would say
6:15 p.m. if it was at night. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

2) C
The first line of the story says, “It is 6:15 a.m.” The next line says, “It is time to
wake up.” We can understand from this information that it is early in the
morning and the first thing Billy has to do is wake up. Nothing else comes
before waking up. Therefore (C) is correct. All of the other things Billy does
come after waking up. Therefore (A), (B), and (D) are incorrect.

3) C
To be second means to come right after whatever comes first. “It is time to
take a shower” comes right after “It is time to wake up.” Waking up is the first
thing to do, so “It is time to take a shower” comes second. Therefore (C) is
correct. The story does not provide information to support answer choices
(A), (B), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

4) A
If something is last, this means it is at the end. At the end of the list of things
Billy does, it says, “It is time to go to sleep.” This means the last thing that
Billy has to do is go to sleep. Therefore (A) is correct.

In the middle of the list of things that Billy does, it says, “It is time to go to
work.” Since going to work is in the middle, it is not last. Therefore (B) is
incorrect. Going to a movie is not on the list of things that Billy does.
Therefore (C) is incorrect. Near the end of the list, we see that “It is time to
eat dinner” comes before “It is time to go to sleep.” Since something comes
after eating dinner, it is not the last thing Billy does. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

5) A
We say something comes after if it follows a thing that comes before it. Near
the end, the story says, “It is time to go home.” Following that sentence, the
story says, “It is time to eat dinner.” Since the time to eat dinner follows the
time to go home, the time to eat dinner comes after. Therefore (A) is correct.

In the story, “It is time to brush teeth” comes before “It is time to go home.”
Therefore (B) is incorrect. “It is time to get dressed” also comes before “It is
time to go home.” Therefore (C) is incorrect. “It is time to wake up” is the first
thing Billy does, so it doesn’t come after anything. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

6) C
At the beginning, the story says, “It is 6:15 a.m. It is time to wake up.” After
that, it is time for Billy to get ready and go to work. Billy wakes up first thing in
the morning and then gets ready and goes to work. We generally sleep at
night, and we cannot go to work when we are sleeping, so from this we can
understand that to wake up means to stop sleeping. Therefore (C) is correct.

Since we cannot get ready and go to work while we are sleeping, to wake up
cannot mean to start sleeping. Therefore (A) is incorrect. Billy starts working
after he wakes up, so to wake up cannot mean to start working. Therefore (B)
is incorrect. Billy eats dinner later, at the end of his day. We know this
because it is near the end of the list. Eating dinner is listed separately from
waking up, so they cannot mean the same thing. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

7) A
In this story, Billy does many things. To be busy means to be occupied with
an activity. Since Billy does activities all day long, we know that Billy is busy.
Therefore (A) is correct. The story does not provide information to support
answer choices (B), (C), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

8) A
Near the beginning, the story says, “It is time to brush teeth.” Before this, it “is
time to take a shower.” After this, it “is time to get dressed.” Since Billy is
getting himself clean and prepared for his day, we can understand from this
information that to brush teeth is to clean teeth. Therefore (A) is correct.

To chatter is to click together over and over again quickly. Teeth chatter when
a person is cold. In the story, Billy is not cold. He is getting groomed for his
day, so it is not time for Billy’s teeth to chatter. Therefore (B) is incorrect. To
bite is to cut into something with your teeth. Billy is getting ready by getting
clean, so it is not time to cut something with his teeth. Therefore (C) is
incorrect. To chew is to use teeth to break something up, like a person does
when eating. Billy is getting cleaned and dressed for work. He is not eating,
so it is not time to chew. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

9) C
In the middle of the story, Billy says, “It is time to go to work. It is time to eat
lunch. It is time to go back to work.” We can understand from this that Billy
goes to work, then stops working when he has lunch, and then starts working
again. To return means to go back to doing something you stopped doing
earlier. Since Billy stops working to have lunch and then starts work again
after lunch, Billy returns to work. Therefore (C) is correct.

To like something is to enjoy it. The story does not tell us if Billy enjoys work.
Billy could return to work whether he likes it or not. Therefore (A) is incorrect.
The story does not provide information about whether Billy is late or not.
Therefore (B) is incorrect. Billy does not stay home after lunch, because later
in the list it is “time to go home.” Therefore (D) is incorrect.

10) B
Near the middle of the story, Billy says, “It is time to eat breakfast.” After that,
Billy says, “It is time to eat lunch.” After that, Billy says, “It is time to eat
dinner.” This means that breakfast comes first, lunch next, and dinner last.
Therefore (B) is correct. The story does not provide information to support
answer choices (A), (C), and (D). Therefore they are incorrect.

about? have been thinking about?

A. nineteen A. ten
B. twenty B. fifteen
C. twenty-one C. twenty-three
D. twenty-two D. twenty-eight
Answers and Explanations

1) D
Near the beginning of the story, Becca and Kai “ate lunch on the porch.
Becca’s mom made sandwiches and lemonade.” Since Becca’s mom made
the sandwiches, we can understand that the friends were at Becca’s house.
Therefore (D) is correct. The story does not provide information to support
answer choices (A), (B), and (C). Therefore they are incorrect.

2) B
Near the beginning, the story says, “The two friends played outside in the
morning. They rode bikes and scooters.” We can understand from this that in
the morning, the friends rode bikes. This supports option (I). We can also
understand from this information that the friends played outside in the
morning. This supports option (II). Becca and Kai “played hide-and-seek in
the house right after lunch.” Since lunch happens after morning, the friends
played hide-and-seek in the afternoon, not the morning. This eliminates
option (III). Therefore (B) is correct.

3) D
Near the beginning, the story says, “They ate lunch on the porch.” We can
understand from this that Becca and Kai ate lunch on the porch. Therefore
(D) is correct. The story does not support answer choices (A), (B), and (C).
Therefore they are incorrect.

4) C
Near the middle of the story, Becca and Kai do not know what to do. “‘I know!
Let’s play the number game,’ said Becca.” We can understand from this that it
was Becca’s idea to play the number game. Therefore (C) is correct.

Becca and Kai play the number game together, but it was Becca alone who
came up with the idea to play the number game. This means that it was not
Kai’s idea. Therefore (A) and (D) are incorrect. The story does not provide
information to support answer choice (B). Therefore it is incorrect.

5) D
Near the middle of the story, Becca suggests that they play the number
game. Becca asks Kai what number she is thinking of. “‘Is it five?’ asked Kai.
‘No, it is higher than five,’ Becca said. ‘Okay, is it one hundred?’” We can
understand from these sentences that Kai’s first guess was five and his
second guess was one hundred. Therefore (D) is correct.

Five was Kai’s first guess. Therefore (A) is incorrect. Twenty-two was Kai’s
last guess. Therefore (B) is incorrect. Kai guesses sixty after he guesses one
hundred. This makes sixty Kai’s third guess. Therefore (C) is incorrect.

6) C
Near the middle of the story, the friends decide to play the number game. Kai
has to guess: ‘‘Is it five?’ asked Kai. ‘No, it is higher than five,’ Becca said.
‘Okay, is it one hundred?’” From this we can understand that Kai guesses one
hundred after Becca tells him the number is “higher than five.” He guesses
one hundred because it is a number that is higher than five. Therefore (C) is
correct.

One hundred is not lower than twenty-two. Therefore (A) is incorrect. One
hundred is higher than sixty, but that is not the reason Kai guesses it. He
guesses one hundred before he guesses sixty, so he is not trying to guess a
number higher than sixty. Therefore (B) is incorrect. One hundred is not lower
than sixty. Therefore (D) is also incorrect.

7) B
In numbers, higher means that one number is more than another number.
178 is 1 more than 177. This means that 178 is a higher number than 177.
Therefore (B) is correct.

When a number is lower than another number, that number is less than the
other number. Since 178 is more than 177, 178 is not lower than 177.
Therefore (A) is incorrect. A number is between two numbers when there is a
lower number before it and a higher number after it. Here, 177 comes before
178, but there is no number after 178. This means that 178 is not between
two numbers. Therefore (C) is incorrect. When a number is the same as
another number, that number is equal to the other number. 178 is 1 more
than 177, so it is not the same as 177. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

8) B
A number is lower than another number if it is less than another number, so
239 is lower than 247. This supports option (I). A number is higher than
another number if it is more than the other number, so 224 is not higher than
256. This eliminates option (II). A number is between two numbers if there is
a lower number before it and a higher number after it, so 224 is between 220
and 230. This supports option (III). Therefore (B) is correct.

9) B
close (adjective): near or in proximity.

When Kai was guessing, he started with five, which was low. Then Kai
guessed one hundred, which was high. Kai’s next guess was sixty, which
again was high. Since Becca was thinking of the number twenty-two, these
numbers were all nearly twenty numbers or more away. So, these guesses
were far away. When Kai guessed twenty-five, he was only three numbers
away. So, this guess was close. Therefore (B) is correct.

How close or far away the guess is does not depend on the size of the
number, it depends on the nearness to the number being thought about.
Therefore (A) is incorrect. Far away is the opposite of close, so Kai’s guess
was not close because it was far away. That would not make sense.
Therefore (C) is incorrect. Since how close the guess is depends on how near
the guess is to the number being thought about, it doesn’t matter whether the
guess is higher or lower. Therefore (D) is incorrect.
10) A
hint (noun): a suggestion or tip.

In the middle of the story, Kai has made a few guesses, but he has not
guessed correctly. Then “Becca gave Kai a hint.” Becca tells Kai that the
number “is between twenty and thirty.” After Becca tells Kai this information,
Kai’s guess is “very close.” Since Becca gives Kai a hint after Kai has
guessed incorrectly, and after the hint Kai makes a better guess, we can
understand that a hint is helpful information—a clue. Therefore (A) is correct.

Giving a hint makes something easier to figure out, not harder. After Kai gets
a hint, he makes a better guess. Therefore (B) is incorrect. Since Becca’s hint
makes it easier for Kai to figure out the number, Becca did not give him the
hint in order to get Kai to give up. Therefore (C) is incorrect. Becca’s hint
made it easier for Kai to figure out the answer, but she did not give Kai the
answer. Therefore (D) is incorrect.

11) D
At the end of the story, Kai makes another guess. “‘Okay, I think I know. Is it
twenty-two?’ Becca says, ‘Yeah! You guessed it.’” Since Becca tells Kai that
Kai is right when he guesses twenty-two, we can understand that Becca was
thinking about the number twenty-two. Therefore (D) is correct.

The story does not provide information to support answer choices (A), (B),
and (C). Therefore they are incorrect.

12) C
In the middle of the story, Becca tells Kai that the number “is between twenty
and thirty.” When Kai guesses twenty-five, Becca tells him that “it is lower.”
Since the number is between twenty and thirty, but lower than twenty-five, the
number must be between twenty and twenty-five. Twenty-three is between
twenty and twenty-five. Therefore (C) is correct.

Ten is lower than twenty. Therefore (A) is incorrect. Fifteen is also lower than
twenty. Therefore (B) is incorrect. Twenty-eight is higher than twenty-five.
Therefore (D) is incorrect.
