The Philippine Environment

I.

Chemical Weathering -breaks down rocks by changing their chemical composition .

Coordinate System it is the way of locating points by labeling them with numbers called coordinates .

Coordinates -these are numbers measured with respect to a system of lines or some fixed reference.

Equator -the imaginary line circling the earth halfway between North pole and South Pole.

Latitude-imaginary lines on a map or globe that measure the distance in degrees north or south of the
equator. Latitude lines extend horizontally , from east to west on a globe.

Longitude- imaginary lines on a map or globe that measure distance in degrees east or west of the prime
meridian.

Minerals – the naturally occurring ,inorganic ,crystalline solid with a definite internal structure and
chemical composition.

Nonrenewable resources-a natural resource such as coal, gas ,oil that ,once consumed ,cannot be
replaced. (coal, natural gas)

Parallels- the circles formed by latitude lines.

Physical Weathering-the process of breaking down rocks without changing their chemical composition.

Prime Meridian-the great circle on Earths surface passing through the North and south Poles, which is
considered 0 degrees latitude .

Renewable Resources- these are organic natural resources which can be replenish.(wind, hydro power,
geothermal, solar)

Rocks-consolidated mixtures of minerals.

Watershed-the land area from which the surface run off drains into a stream , channel ,lake ,reservoir or
other body of water.

The relationship between our latitude position and high diversity of life forms is that Philippines is located
near the equator where there is sunshine all year around and rainfall is abundant.

Factors that affect the formation of soil( climate , temperature, and amount of rainfall)

The presence of minerals in the Philippines indicates the presence of geologic structure like active faults
and volcanoes.
