DIRECTIONS: Point to each picture in each set of four boxes one at a time and ask the student to
name the picture. After naming the picture, ask him or her to identify the initial sound in the
word. Place an X in the small box at the lower right for each error. Practice with the first picture.
PRACTICE: Say: This is a cat. Cat begins with the /k/ sound: /k/ cat. Now it is your turn. Point to the
next picture: a duck. Say: What is this? What sound does it begin with?

DIRECTIONS: Have the student name the pictures in each row. Then tell him or her to put an X
on the picture in each row that starts with a different sound. Make sure he/she identifies the
proper name for each picture. Practice with the first row of pictures.
PRACTICE: Say: I am going to say the name of each picture in the first row – top, dog, tiger. Top and
tiger begin with the /t/ sound. Dog is different. It begins with the /d/ sound. I will mark an X on dog.

DIRECTIONS: Slowly and clearly read each word. Have the student slowly repeat the word and
say the beginning sound. Place an X in the box at the right for each error he/she makes.
Practice with the first word.
PRACTICE: Say: I am going to read a word. Read monkey. Say: Monkey begins with an /m/ sound: /m/;
monkey. Now it is your turn. Listen to the word I say. Then repeat the word and say the sound at the
beginning.

PRACTICE: Say: I am going to read three words. Read: rattle, race, bottle. Say: Rattle and race begin
with the /r/ sound: /r/; rattle and /r/; race. Bottle begins with the /b/ sound: /b/; bottle. Bottle is the word
with a different beginning sound. Now it is your turn.
