Discussion with Occupational therapist list of strategies

List of strategies for Student to be implemented in term 4 2018


Recommended by Occupational Therapist
1. Transition into activities slowly: For letter writing unit in term 4 student requires
large movements transitioning from gross motor skills to fine motor skills. Repeat
this process as a way to strengthen and extend learning stamina.
2. 30 minutes letter writing activity
o Big animal movements 10 minutes to centre himself in the
classroom and engage student within the activity.
o 10 minutes fine motor activities to build fine motor skills.
o 10 minutes of writing – will take time to build this stamina.
3. He needs big movement to support his learning and develop his sense of awareness
of where he is physically in the classroom.
4. Learning frame of mind is about 5 minutes long – Engage him in learning and then
provide frequent brain breaks that allow for movement around the classroom
moving his whole body.
5. He responds best to Deep pressure – bringing him into the learning frame of mind.
Start the process in a heighten state of mind then slowing sow down the process
slowing the voice, body movements.
Strategies to bring into zone of learning
- Use of weighted blankets in the sensory room.
- Squeezing of a large pillow.
- Hand pushing against the wall.
- Jumping activities
- Walking along lines.
- Flapping with arms.
Recommendations for discussion from phycologist
1. Create a visual learning chart to support Student in engaging in classroom activities
as well as follow instructions.
2. Incorporate frequent brain breaks into classroom activities.
