USES AND GRATIFICATION (Elihu Katz & E. Rossi Spring 2002)

according to spring,2002; over the past few decades, technology has truly revolutionalized our
lives. This theory came up with the motion that people use the media to their benefit. In this case we
will be able to understand why and how people actively seek out specific media to satisfy specific needs.
In this scenario, people use media as a tool to find their match using online dating sites and will satisfy
their needs and allow one to enhance knowledge, social interaction and relaxation.

SIMILARITY THESIS

According to Adelman & Ahuvia 1991; Gottlieb, 2006; Will & Cozby 1987; today’s commercial
matchmakers often work with a small base of clientel, whom they get to know personally. Their
matching decisions are typically based on intuition and experience, not mathematical algorithms. In this
theory this discusses how online interpersonal communication and face to face communication that
people are drawn when they’re similar to each other. In this case, this shows how it started to getting
closer to someone that is similar to yourselves and message that person frequently. It is different to face
to face where you can most likely tell from the start.

SOCIAL PENETRATION THEORY

As the connection evolves, interpersonal communication moves from something depthless.

Intimate levels to deeper, more like those intimate ones. In this case, we will be able to understand
relationship between individuals. And in this scenario, it requires different levels intimacy exchange or
social penetration.

TOLERANCE FOR VULNERABILITY

According to this theory, people tend to ask how vulnerable sharing information will make them
and then they will appraise their comfort with vulnerability. Many relationships do this, people tend to
share more information faster in online dating than they would face to face. Many people get scared on
nervousin face to face in Online Dating. Most people will list many things on profiles and gone as much
information as possible.

SOCIAL EXCHANGE THEORY (GEORGE HAMANS)

Social exchange theory proposes that social behavior is the result of an exchange process. It is to
maximize benefits and maximize costs. According to this theory, people weight the potential and
benefits and risks of social relationships, when the risk but weigh the rewards, people will terminate or
abandon that relationship. Most relationship are made up of a certain amount of give and take but this
does not mean that they are always equal.

MERE EXPOSURE EFFECT ( ROBERT ZAJONC 1960’s and 1990’s)

In this theory, it happens in both online and in conventional. People like things that is familiar to
them. The mere that they are around someone or something the more it becomes attractive. People
tend to develop a preference for things merely because they are familiar with them.

explain how individual use computer mediated communication to develop interpersonal
impression and to advance relational communication over a time in online world. Theory stated
the more the user shared their information continuously they both develop a judgement and
slowly build a strong bond that can be effective ass face to face relationship.

COGNITIVE DISSONANCE

-Refers to a situation involving conflicting attitudes, beliefs or behaviors that lead to dis harmony which
people strive to avoid. This theory proposed by psychologist Leon Festinger. Theory explain how your
attitude change when there is inconsistency between your belief and behavior to other.

RELATIONAL DIALECTICS THEORY

- A theory introduced by Baxter and Matgomery in 1998, explain the communication patterns
that arise between individuals between when they maintain a relationship, this theory focuses
on tension and struggle of relationship. In this case, the partners found out the meaning of their
relationship through their conflicts, how they understand and respect their differences and
having their own space. Dialectics are the competing states that produced through dialogue.
