Reading
This term we will be learning about World War II, reading children’s stories
and poems based around war life and how WW2 impacted our local area.
As well as this, we will be reading information texts about Winston
Churchill and things which we had in place on a day to day basis
throughout the war (air raid shelters, ration books etc).

Your child will be read with every week, spending half an hour completing
guided reading tasks, focused on a scheme called Project X.

Children will have a reading record and we encourage

parents to read daily with your child and log it in this book.
Writing
This year will be continuing to focus on ways to improve children’s
writing, developing their understanding of VCOP (vocabulary,
connectives, openers and punctuation).

Through the scheme Read Write Inc Language and Literacy and the
Power of Reading, the children will be given many writing opportunities
that will be assessed and kept in their writing portfolios.

We also teach writing creatively across the curriculum and through our
whole school challenges.
Maths
This year we will begin following a mastery based scheme called White
Rose Maths which covers the National Curriculum.

We will begin the year with a focus on Number then lead into other
units such as geometry and measurement, as well as looking at formal
methods for addition and subtraction.

Our school ethos encourage a kinaesthetic approach, involving lots of

actions linked to maths concepts and games.
