The gift of the Magi by O. Henry

This story takes places in the house, the shop and wig shop. They have dinner in their
house at 7 in Christmas Day. The atmosphere is very sad and touching. Della as the main
character and protagonist is described as a kind, honest, lovely and worried person. Jim as the
main character and protagonist is described as a kind, wise, lovely and faithful person. Mrs.
Sofronie as the supported character and protagonist is described as a direct person.

There is a husband and wife named Jam and Della, they want to celebrate Christmas
Day by giving gift to each other, because of their economic limitations, they are forced to sell
their valuables things. Della really takes care of her beautiful long hair, which her husband is
very proud of. But Della sells it which the money the uses later to buy a gift for her husband.
While Jim sells his gold watch, it is hereditary things. At dinner, Jim is shocked and
disappointed to see Della with her short hair. Della immediately explained what had
happened, in fact she was doing this to buy a new watch for Jim. Della asks Jim to show his
gold watch, but Jim explains that his watch was also sold by him to buy The Combs for
Della. In the end Jim explained that all who give and receive gifts are the most wise. They are
the Magi.

In this story, the narrator uses third-person point of view, the pronouns, “she”, “he”,
“it”, “they”, or a name. The style of language used is semantic, it uses figurative language,
hyperbole. The theme of this story is sacrificing of love solved by accepting each other.
