a)Define the efficiency of a transformer and derive the condition for which the efficiency of a
transformer is maximum.

1.b) Derive the expression for the EMF induced in the secondary winding of a transformer.

1.c) A single phase 20 KVA transformer has 1000 primary turns and 2500 secondary turns. The net cross
sectional area of the core is 100cm2 , when the primary winding is connected to 500v, 50 Hz supply,
calculate i) The maximum value of the flux density in the core. Ii)the voltage induced in the secondary
winding and iii)the primary and secondary full load currents.

2a) With a neat diagram, explain plate earthing

c) What are the precautions to be taken to prevent electric shock?

3a) “Both the power and power factor in a 3 phase circuit can be measured using 2 wattmeters”. Prove
this giving relevant circuit and vector diagram.

b) A balanced 3phase star connected load and 150 kw takes a leading current of 100 A with a line
voltage of 1100v, 50 Hz. Find circuit constants of the load per phase.

c)3 coils each of impedance 20 ∟600 are connected in star to a 3 phase, 400v, 50Hz supply. Find the
radings of each of the two wattmeters connected to measure the power input.

4a)The input power to a 3 phase Induction motor runningon 400v, 50 Hz supply was measured by 2
wattmeter method and readings were 3000w and -1000w. Claculate i) total power input ii)power factor
iii)line current

b)Obtain the relationship between line and phase , voltage and currents in a 3 phase balanced star
connected system.

c)Define phase sequence and list out the advantages of 3 phase systems as compared to 1 phase
system.
