Introduction: -

Children undergoing chemotherapy most frequently experience painful invasive procedures

like IV cannulation to administer medication. It is often accompanied by pain, fear and anxiety.
Thus, the reduction of such pain, fear and anxiety becomes the responsibility of health care
professionals by using various pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
Method: -
The present study was carried out in hemato oncology ward of a tertiary care hospital of
Bhubaneswar with a purpose to determine the effect of Animated Cartoon on pain perception
during IV cannulation. 60 children of 3 to 6 years age undergoing IV cannulation for
chemotherapy were selected through random sampling method. Children who were seriously
ill, visually and auditory handicapped excluded from the study. Perception of pain was assessed
among control group with routine care only but in experimental group with routine care and
just showing animated cartoon one minute before administration of IV cannulation. The tool
used for the study included a baseline Performa, Wong Baker Pain Scale, FLACC (Face, Legs,
Activity, Cry & Cons ability) behaviour pain scale.
Results: -
There was significant less pain observed (p <0.001) among the children with use of animated
cartoons as per Wong Baker Pain Scale and FLACC Pain Scale. There was significant
association of pain perception with gender, previous exposure of IV cannulation and diameter
of IV cannula. Significant increase in pain score with the increase in age was observed as per
one-way ANOVA (p<0.001).
Discussion: -
Animated cartoon is an effective, easy and economical distraction strategy to reduce pain
among the children undergoing IV cannulation for chemotherapy. Thus, animated cartoons can
be used for effective handling of behavioural responses in children during invasive procedures
in various paediatric settings.
