Scenorio1:

1. IBM AS400 storage is other than EMC we can use “EMC Open replicator for Symmetrix.
2. It’s a Platform-independent replication for enterprise data mobility and non-disruptive
migrations.

Scenario 2:
1. EMC storage is already in place, we can use SRDF/Time finder for IBM i.

EMC VMAX

EMC Symmetrix VMAX systems are storage platforms intended for open systems and mainframe
computing. Symmetrix VMAX systems run the Enginuity operating environment. The system scales
from a single Symmetrix VMAX Engine system with one storage bay to a large eight-engine system
with a maximum of ten storage bays.

Symmetrix Remote Data Facility

The Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) is a family of software products that facilitates the data
replication from one Symmetrix storage array to another through a storage area network or Internet
Protocol(IP) network.
SRDF logically pairs a device or a group of devices from each array and replicates data from one to
the other synchronously or asynchronously. An established pair of devices can be split, so that
separate hosts can access the same data independently (maybe for backup), and then be
resynchronized.
In synchronous mode (SRDF/S), the primary array waits until the secondary array has
acknowledged each write before the next write is accepted, ensuring that the replicated copy of the
data is always as current as the primary. However, the latency due to propagation increases
significantly with distance.
Asynchronous SRDF (SRDF/A) transfers changes made to the secondary array in units called delta
sets, which are transferred at defined intervals. Although the remote copy of the data will never be
as current as the primary copy, this method can replicate data over considerable distances and with
reduced bandwidth requirements and minimal impact on host performance.
Other forms of SRDF integrate with clustered environments and to manage multiple SRDF pairs
where replication of multiple devices must be consistent (such as with the data files and log files of a
database application).
EMC® SRDF® /TimeFinder® Manager for IBM i
EMC SRDF/TimeFinder Manager for IBM i is a set of host-based utilities that provides an IBM i
interface to EMC Remote Data Facility (SRDF) and EMC TimeFinder. The SRDF/TimeFinder
interface enables you to configure and control SRDF or TimeFinder operations on DMX and VMAX
Family arrays attached to IBM i hosts. The operations are:

 Execute TimeFinder commands to establish and split TimeFinder BCV devices where BCVs
are used for local mirroring, or are used as the source device in multi-hop replication
solutions.
 Create point-in-time copies of full volumes or individual data sets using TimeFinder/Clone
copy sessions.
 Execute SRDF commands to perform establish and split operations for local replication
solutions, or for extended-distance replication solutions, such as SRDF/Asynchronous
(SRDF/A).
 SRDF/TimeFinder Manager provides support for the IBM i host environment, such as
multipath, boot from SAN, and independent ASP (IASP) functionality.

Time Finder functionality: -

The Time Finder family of local replication software allows users to non-disruptively create and
manage point-in-time copies of data to allow operational processes, such as backup, reporting, and
application testing to be performed independent of the source application, and to maximize service
levels without impacting performance or availability
