I WOULD RATHER…
8.1. Introduction
Are you ready for the next unit? This one has the title I WOULD RATHER…
Let me say an example using this expression: I would rather die on my feet
than live on my knees. Do you know the meaning? It means that it is better to
live for your beliefs with dignity and respect rather than to pretend believing
another's views.
Anyway, let me say what vocabulary and grammar I am going to explain in the
unit.
The vocabulary is related to housework and Internet. And, as for the grammar,
we will revise the verbs that are followed by -ing or infinitive and the use of
prefer and would rather.
Besides, you will have the opportunity to practice all the theory doing all the
exercises that you will find in the Practice section!
I am sure you are improving your English playing the games and reading about
the place where Susan and I are spending a few days.
Time for the listening. Listen closely for information that can be important and
useful to understand the meaning of the dialogue.
8.2.1. Listening 1
We have just arrived in Yosemite Park, San Francisco. It is a gorgeous and huge
park. We are very happy with the idea of coming here. We decided to spend
some days resting in the middle of this park in a small house. It is a cozy, cute
and charming house and we have a lovely view. As we are going to stay for a
week Susan and me are talking about the housework…listen to us:
Matthew: That is a huge and fabulous park. We also can rent bikes! Cool! But
…Susan, it seems that we have to share the housework as we are going to stay
here some days!
Susan: Is that necessary? I can't remember myself doing the house cleaning,
cooking, washing the dishes, dumping out the garbage, doing the laundry,
sweeping... I usually have a maid that cleans my house.
Matthew: Come on Susan! You must be exaggerating! Don’t you like, for
example, cooking?
Susan: I do not, but don’t worry. I will cook these days. I prefer cooking than
washing up.
Matthew: Ok, that is fair enough. And I will sweep up and mop the floor. Also I
can make the beds.
Matthew: That’s not a big deal. I am motivated to do some chores around the
house. The secret of a happy marriage is to share the housework. And as you
see we wouldn’t have any problem…
Listen to Susan talking about men and housework. Do you agree with her?

Here we will study grammar. In this topic it is about verbs followed by gerund
(-ing) and verbs followed by infinitive. We will also study “prefer” and “would
rather”.
There are some verbs that are followed by a gerund. The gerund is formed by
adding to the verb –ing.
It is used as a noun, and doesn’t form tenses. In a sentence its use depends
on what precedes it (verb, preposition, etc.) or it refers to a general activity.
There are some verbs which are followed by an infinitive. Depending on the
verb, it will be with or without “to”.
Remember + -ing
Remember + to
Go on +-ing
Meaning: Continue doing the same thing.
Example: I go on reading this book.
Go on + to
Meaning: Do or say something new.
Example: I go on to explain the next point.
Regret + to
Meaning: I’m sorry that I have to say, etc.
Example: I regret to inform you that you need to pay the double.
Forget +-ing
Meaning: Forget to do something.
Example: I forgot opening the door. (I forgot and the door is still
opened)
Forget + to
Meaning: Forget that you did something.
Example: I forgot to open the door. (I closed the door, but I forgot that
I did that)
Try +-ing
Meaning: Experiment on, prove
Example: We tried getting through to her on the phone but…
Try + to
Meaning: To attempt to do something
Example: We tried to get through to her on the phone but...
We use “prefer” or “would rather” to talk about things or activities that you like
better than other things or activities.
Prefer
We use “prefer” to express a general preference, that is, to talk about likes,
dislikes, what we want, etc.
Would rather
The negative of “would rather” is “I’d rather not”, and it is used to refuse an
offer, suggestion or invitation.

Internet Advantages
There are many advantages for using the internet, such as Email and the
searching or looking for information.
Today, the Internet has become the most powerful tool for mankind. It offers
also a great variety of services and resources.
Many new services are now provided on the Internet, such as online banking,
online shopping, purchasing tickets for your favourite movies or plays, and
hotel reservations. You can also be admitted to different universities online.
The basic aim of the Internet has always been communication. And it is a cheap
communication way. Just imagine the costs of sending out physical mailing to
many addresses, with the costs of an e-mailing to many e-mail addresses. The
second option is more worthwhile.
Nowadays nearly every middle-class people have internet at home as they have
TV.
Read again the text Internet Advantages and then fill in the blanks of the text:

Hi All!
What’s up?
I have been trying to write a response to you all for at least a week, but we
were so busy visiting places that I didn’t have much time. But now that
Matthew and me are in Yosemite National park for a week I have free time and
Internet to do it! Here we have rented a house and all this is gorgeous. I will
send you some pictures later.
I hope you all are now on holidays, so enjoy them and I look forward to seeing
you. I might come over and see you at beginning of January. Will you be
around? I'm thinking 4/5/6/7 January.

As Susan likes surfing the net to find more information, here there is new
information related to this national Park and Yosemite Valley in California.
You can drive your car to the Park year-round, but be careful because no
gasoline is sold in Yosemite Valley. Matthew and me were very cautious and
came in with the tank full.
We were very lucky that we had Internet access in Yosemite Park. Wireless
Internet service is available in some public places at Yosemite Lodge at the
Falls and at The Ahwahnee for a fee. Internet kiosks, also for a fee, are located
in the lobby at the Yosemite Lodge at the Falls. In addition, free terminals are
available at the GirlsClub County Satellite Library next to the Valley Visitor
Centre.
The walls of the Valley are draped with waterfalls that usually run full in spring
and early summer.
Visitors enjoy fields of flowers in summer, a show of colour in fall, and brilliant
mountain light and relatively mild temperatures in winter. A number of
recreational and educational opportunities are available including hiking, biking,
nature walks, photography, ice-skating and cross-country skiing. Visitors can
also take advantage of lodging, dining, tours, etc. An area rich in history and
geologic marvels, Yosemite has a variety of sites you will definitely want to visit.
One of the great things to see here is a monolith called El Capitan. This massive,
granite monolith stands 3,593 feet from base to summit and is claimed to be
the largest monolith of granite in the world.
Also the Half Dome. It is the Yosemite’s most distinctive monument, Half Dome,
dominates most Valley views.
Yosemite is home to a great variety of animals: the coyote, mule deer, spotted
bat, golden eagle, the great gray owl, etc. Also, American black bears are an
integral part of the Sierra Nevada ecosystem and are only one of the many
animal species protected in Yosemite National Park.
