UNIT 8.

I WOULD RATHER…

8.1. Introduction

Are you ready for the next unit? This one has the title I WOULD RATHER…

Let me say an example using this expression: I would rather die on my feet
than live on my knees. Do you know the meaning? It means that it is better to
live for your beliefs with dignity and respect rather than to pretend believing
another's views.

Anyway, let me say what vocabulary and grammar I am going to explain in the
unit.

The vocabulary is related to housework and Internet. And, as for the grammar,
we will revise the verbs that are followed by -ing or infinitive and the use of
prefer and would rather.

Besides, you will have the opportunity to practice all the theory doing all the
exercises that you will find in the Practice section!

I am sure you are improving your English playing the games and reading about
the place where Susan and I are spending a few days.

8.2. Listening

Time for the listening. Listen closely for information that can be important and
useful to understand the meaning of the dialogue.

8.2.1. Listening 1

We have just arrived in Yosemite Park, San Francisco. It is a gorgeous and huge
park. We are very happy with the idea of coming here. We decided to spend
some days resting in the middle of this park in a small house. It is a cozy, cute
and charming house and we have a lovely view. As we are going to stay for a
week Susan and me are talking about the housework…listen to us:

Matthew: That is a huge and fabulous park. We also can rent bikes! Cool! But
…Susan, it seems that we have to share the housework as we are going to stay
here some days!

Susan: Is that necessary? I can't remember myself doing the house cleaning,
cooking, washing the dishes, dumping out the garbage, doing the laundry,
sweeping... I usually have a maid that cleans my house.

Matthew: Come on Susan! You must be exaggerating! Don’t you like, for
example, cooking?

Susan: I do not, but don’t worry. I will cook these days. I prefer cooking than
washing up.

Matthew: Ok, that is fair enough. And I will sweep up and mop the floor. Also I
can make the beds.

Susan: Thanks, Matthew. I hate sweeping.

Matthew: That’s not a big deal. I am motivated to do some chores around the
house. The secret of a happy marriage is to share the housework. And as you
see we wouldn’t have any problem…

Susan: Matthew! What do you mean…?

8.2 Inglés Intermedio Alto (B2). I would rather…

8.2.2. Listening 2

Listen to Susan talking about men and housework. Do you agree with her?

Do men do their share of housework? It is a question I have made many times

to myself. Well, I suppose that depends on the man. There are some men who
are now stay at home dads that pull double duty cleaning and caring for
children. There are some men that come home from work, shop for groceries
and spend their evenings doing dishes and tidying the house. Yet, there are
other men that expect their wives to clean, cook, and care for the children. So
as I said before it depends on the man, we cannot generalize.

There is no reason why a man can't help

out with housework. If he lives there,
eats, makes a mess, needs clean clothes,
he should be able to participate. Of
course, a wife is not a mother or slave to
her husband. If I had a husband I am
sure that we would have an
understanding about housework: if I
clean downstairs, he cleans upstairs; I
clean the bathrooms, he takes out the
garbage; if I do the laundry, he puts it away. If I'm late in the evening, he can
start preparing the dinner. If he washes, I dry. I will appreciate some help,
especially if my husband does it without me having to ask him!

8.4. Grammar

Here we will study grammar. In this topic it is about verbs followed by gerund
(-ing) and verbs followed by infinitive. We will also study “prefer” and “would
rather”.

Let’s study together!

8.4.1. Verbs followed by gerund

There are some verbs that are followed by a gerund. The gerund is formed by
adding to the verb –ing.

It is used as a noun, and doesn’t form tenses. In a sentence its use depends
on what precedes it (verb, preposition, etc.) or it refers to a general activity.

Let’s study when to use the gerund:

After verbs that (in general)

express attitude dealing to an
activity: love, hate, detest, I like playing golf.
dread, like, feel, fancy, fear,
etc.

After “admit” and “deny”. He admitted hurting his brother.

My mother avoided talking to my

father.
After “be worth” or “worth

(while)”.
After “can’t help” or “couldn’t

help”.
They have delayed opening the new

store.
After “mean”. Love means caring for someone.

After “miss” I missed dancing with you.

After “prefer...to...” I prefer eating to drinking.

8.10 Inglés Intermedio Alto (B2). I would rather…

After senses verbs: see, hear,
I saw him watching TV.
smell, sense, etc.
After verbs expressing the
beginning, continuity or end of an
It started snowing.
activity: start, begin, continue, go
on, keep (on), finish, end,...

After “stop” (meaning “dejar de”). He stopped talking.

After “suggest”. I suggested going to sleep.

After “regret”. I regret buying this car.

After “postpone” My boss postponed meeting us.

We also use –ing after: give up
I gave up doing that.
(stop) and put off (postpone)

Also we put –ing to all the verbs after the prepositions:

Example: I am interested in studying Italian.

8.4.2. Verbs followed by infinitive

There are some verbs which are followed by an infinitive. Depending on the
verb, it will be with or without “to”.

 Infinitive without “to”.

After “had better”. You had better study Medicine.

After “have”, meaning “hacerle”. Have her come in.
Idiomatic sentences. Easy come, easy go.
After “let”. Let me go with you.
After “make”. You make me feel good.
After “see”,”hear”, “smell”, “sense”, etc. I heard her sing.
After modal verbs. I must be careful.
After “why” or “why not”. Why not go with them?
After “would rather”. I would rather see you.

Inglés Intermedio Alto (B2). I would rather… 8.11

 Infinitive with “to”

After “agree” I agreed to lend him my car.

After the meeting we decided to buy

the company.
After “would like”. I would like to make the bed.
After “prefer...than...” I prefer to dance than to sing.
After “propose”. I proposed to go there.

activity.
After “hope” You hope to come early.
After “promise” I promised to arrive on time.
After “want” She wants the chocolate one.

Also we put to+verb after some adjectives:

Example: I am glad to stay here.

8.4.3. Verbs + -ing or to

 Remember + -ing

Meaning: Remember doing something after you have done it

Example: I remembered sending the letter.

 Remember + to

Meaning: Remember to do something before you do it.

Example: You must remember to send the letter.

 Go on +-ing
Meaning: Continue doing the same thing.
Example: I go on reading this book.

 Go on + to
Meaning: Do or say something new.
Example: I go on to explain the next point.

8.12 Inglés Intermedio Alto (B2). I would rather…

 Regret + -ing
Meaning: I did it and now I’m sorry.
Example: I regret making you feel bad.

 Regret + to
Meaning: I’m sorry that I have to say, etc.
Example: I regret to inform you that you need to pay the double.

 Try + to
Meaning: To attempt to do something
Example: We tried to get through to her on the phone but...

8.4.4. “Prefer”/ “would rather”

We use “prefer” or “would rather” to talk about things or activities that you like
better than other things or activities.

Let’s study both:

 Prefer

We use “prefer” to express a general preference, that is, to talk about likes,
dislikes, what we want, etc.

It is followed by a noun, a gerund or an infinitive with “to”.

Example: I usually prefer a magazine.

I usually prefer reading a magazine.

Inglés Intermedio Alto (B2). I would rather… 8.13

I usually prefer to read a magazine than watch TV.

 Would rather

We use “would rather” to talk about a preference in a particular, more specific

situation.

It is followed by an infinitive without “to”.

Example: I’d rather cook dinner at home.

The negative of “would rather” is “I’d rather not”, and it is used to refuse an
offer, suggestion or invitation.

“Would rather” goes with “than”.

Example: I’d rather talk than call on the phone.

8.5. Reading

Read the following article about the advantages of Internet.

Susan and me are at home. At the minute, I am doing the washing up and she
is reading. Let’s know what she is reading.

8.5.1. Text

Internet Advantages

There are many advantages for using the internet, such as Email and the
searching or looking for information.

The email is now an essential communication tool. It is also excellent for

keeping in touch with friends and family. The good thing is that to write emails
or chat is free if we compare to telephone, cell phones and postal services.

Internet is good for getting information because it provides instant

communication to almost anywhere. Things that happen in any part of the
world can be instantly communicated around the globe. Digital media
preparation and presentation can flash photos online in seconds.

Today, the Internet has become the most powerful tool for mankind. It offers
also a great variety of services and resources.

Many new services are now provided on the Internet, such as online banking,
online shopping, purchasing tickets for your favourite movies or plays, and
hotel reservations. You can also be admitted to different universities online.

The basic aim of the Internet has always been communication. And it is a cheap
communication way. Just imagine the costs of sending out physical mailing to
many addresses, with the costs of an e-mailing to many e-mail addresses. The
second option is more worthwhile.

Nowadays nearly every middle-class people have internet at home as they have
TV.

Internet to do it! Here we have rented a house and all this is gorgeous. I will

I hope you all are now on holidays, so enjoy them and I look forward to seeing

8.6. Speaking

 Intonation and stress

Intonation contour is the rise and fall of pitch.

In English, there are some intonation patterns which add meaning to the
utterance: question, statement, surprise, disbelief, etc.

To mark the focus of a sentence we have an intonational accent.

In questions the normal intonation contours are:

 Final rising pitch for a yes/ no question.

Example: Are you doing your homework?

 Final falling pitch for a wh- question.

Example: Where do you live?

If we use a different pattern it adds something extra to the question.

For example, rising intonation on a wh- question can imply surprise.

As for, stress:

In English, we do not say each syllable with the same force or strength. In one
word, we accentuate one syllable very loudly and all the other syllables very
quietly.

For example, in the word “cardinal” we say: CARdinal

Listen to the following words and choose the correct answer dealing with the
stress (stress syllables are in capitals):

8.8. English World

Enjoy reading and listening interesting things about Yosemite Park.

As Susan likes surfing the net to find more information, here there is new
information related to this national Park and Yosemite Valley in California.

Yosemite National Park, CA

Yosemite National Park, one of the first wilderness

parks in the U.S., is best known for its waterfalls. But
within its 1170 square miles, deep valleys, grand
meadows, ancient giant sequoias, vast wilderness
and captivating wildlife also exist. Situated in
California's Sierra Nevada mountain range, Yosemite's
peaks soar to above 13,000 feet above sea level.

Yosemite National Park was established by an act of

Congreso on October 1, 1890, and has since become
one of the best-known parks in the world. Five
distinct areas attract nearly 3.5 million visitors each
year to the park: Yosemite Valley, Wawona and the Mariposa Grove of Giant
Sequoias, Glacier Point, the Tioga Road and Tuolumne Meadows, and Hetch
Hetchy.

You can drive your car to the Park year-round, but be careful because no
gasoline is sold in Yosemite Valley. Matthew and me were very cautious and
came in with the tank full.

We were very lucky that we had Internet access in Yosemite Park. Wireless
Internet service is available in some public places at Yosemite Lodge at the
Falls and at The Ahwahnee for a fee. Internet kiosks, also for a fee, are located
in the lobby at the Yosemite Lodge at the Falls. In addition, free terminals are
available at the GirlsClub County Satellite Library next to the Valley Visitor
Centre.

Yosemite Valley

Yosemite Valley is a world-famous

scenic location in the Sierra Nevada
mountains of California. It is the
centerpiece of Yosemite National
Park, attracting visitors from all parts
of the globe.

Yosemite Valley is seven miles long.

The Valley was formed by glacial erosion over millions of years.

The walls of the Valley are draped with waterfalls that usually run full in spring
and early summer.

Visitors enjoy fields of flowers in summer, a show of colour in fall, and brilliant
mountain light and relatively mild temperatures in winter. A number of
recreational and educational opportunities are available including hiking, biking,
nature walks, photography, ice-skating and cross-country skiing. Visitors can
also take advantage of lodging, dining, tours, etc. An area rich in history and
geologic marvels, Yosemite has a variety of sites you will definitely want to visit.

One of the great things to see here is a monolith called El Capitan. This massive,
granite monolith stands 3,593 feet from base to summit and is claimed to be
the largest monolith of granite in the world.

Also the Half Dome. It is the Yosemite’s most distinctive monument, Half Dome,
dominates most Valley views.

Yosemite is home to a great variety of animals: the coyote, mule deer, spotted
bat, golden eagle, the great gray owl, etc. Also, American black bears are an
integral part of the Sierra Nevada ecosystem and are only one of the many
animal species protected in Yosemite National Park.

Don’t miss and come to visit this huge national Park.

Many services are now provided on the Internet, such as online banking, online
shopping, purchasing tickets for your favourite movies, and hotel reservations.
You can also be admitted to different universities online.

The basic aim of the Internet has always been communication. And it is a cheap
communication way. Just imagine the costs of sending out physical mailing to
many addresses, with the costs of an e-mailing to many e-mail addresses. The
second option is more worthwhile.

Nowadays nearly every middle-class people have internet at home as they have
TV.
