Conclusion

The purposes of this experiment was to study the operation of filter press for filtration of
calcium carbonate slurry and to determine filter medium resistance and specific cake
resistance from filtration data obtained. From the experiment, the wet cake obtained after the
experiment was 3.3 kg and dry cake mass 2.64 kg. The filtration process done after 864 s and
total volume of filtrate is 80 litres. The recovery of the calcium carbonate is 80%. The viscosity
of the fluid is inversely proportional to the rate of filtration. The lower the viscosity will increase
the rate of filtration. The sample at 5L, 45L and 80L that has viscosity of 8.8, 5.6 and 4 Pa.s
while the amount of time taken to filter this sample is 65s, 56s and 53s. The density of the
sample has remained the same throughout the experiment which is 0.997 g/cm³. Based on
the data, the graph of t/V versus V has been plotted and the trendline showing linear increase

and cake resistance. At sample 5L, the filter medium resistance is -4.327×10^5 and cake
resistance is 1.566×10^7 while at sample 45L, the filter medium resistance is -6.799×10^5
and cake resistance is 2.461×10^7. At 80L, the filter medium resistance is -9.519×10^5 and
the cake resistance is 3.445×10^7. In a nutshell, the objectives of this experiment has
achieved.

Recommendation

There was recommendation for the experiment of plate and frame filter press which is in
the future, we may create and use inline vertical centrifugal pumps to prevent leakage air through
pump shaft seal that will allow oxygen to enter the system. Therefore, we can have a better result
of the experiment. Other than that, to maximize the operating level of the equipment, we may use
a combination of filter cloth coated with filter aid such as filter paper. Lastly, in the future we may
create a machine that can measure density and viscosity digitally for an accurate result of plate
and frame filter press.
