TEST 2.1 Qualification Test Each welder shall be qualified for each welding process to be used in production welding, ‘The performance qualification test shall be performed in accordance with one of MHI’s qualified Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) and Plan for Performance Test. ‘A.welder qualified to weld in accordance with one qualified WPS is also qualified to weld in accordance with other qualified WPS's, limits of the essential variables of QW-350 in Section IX of the ASME Boiler and Pressure ‘Vessel Code. (Refer to attached sheet 9.1). ‘A welder is qualified only for the positions in accordance with Chapter 4. ing the same welding process, within the He shall be requalified whenever a change is made in one or more of the essentials variables listed in QW-350. ‘The limits of thickness for which he will be qualified are dependent upon the thickness of the weld he deposits with each welding process, in which this thickness shall be considered the test coupon thickness as given in QW-452. (Refer to attached sheet 9.3). ated at any stage of the testing procedure, whenever it ‘The performance test may be te becomes apparent to the supervisor conducting the tests that the welder does mot have the required skill to produce satisfactory results. (All welding inspection for performance qualification tests except for fillet welding as given in QW-141.3, shall be confirmed by using test pieces on radiographic inspection instead of the bend test, as given in QW-142).(Please refer to attached shect 9.9). 22 Identification of Welders Each qualified welder, and welding operator shall be assigned an identifying symbol by MHI. When using the jigs illustrated QW-466.1 or QW-466.2, the side of the specimen tured toward the gap of the jig shall be the face for face-bend specimens, the root for root-bend specimens, and the side with the greater discontinuities, if any for side-bend specimens. The specimen shall be forced into the die by applying load con the plunger until the curvature of the specimen is such that a 1/8 in, mm) diameter wire cannot be inserted between the specimen and the die of QW-466.1 or the specimen is bottom ejected, if the roller type of jig (QW-466.2) is used. When using the wrap around jig (QW-466.3), the side of the specimen tumed toward the roller shall be the face for the face-bend specimens, the root for the root-bend, specimens, and the side with greater discontinuities, if any, for side-bend specimens. When specimens wider than 1 1/2 in, (38 mm) are to be bent as permitted in QW-462.2, the test jig mandrel must be at least 1/4 in, (6 mm) wider than the specimen width, 3.4.7 Acceptance Criteria for Bend Test ‘The weld and heat-affected zone of a transverse-weld bend specimen shall be completely within the bent portion of the specimen after testing ‘The guided-bend specimens shall have no open discontinuity in the weld or heat-affected zone exceeding 1/8 in. (3 mm), measured in any direction on the convex surface of the specimen after bending. Open discontinuities occurring on the comers of the specimen during testing shall not be considered unless there is definite evidence that they result from lack of fusion, slag inclusions, or other intemal discontinuities. For corrosion-resistant weld overlay cladding, no open discontinuity exceeding 1/16 in (1.5 mm), measured in any direction, shall be permitted in the cladding, and no open discontinuity exceeding 1/8 in, (3 mm) shall be permitted along the approximate weld interface. 3.5 Fillet Weld Test 3.5.1 Specimens The dimensions and preparation of fillet weld test specimens for performance qualification shall conform to the requirements in QW-462.4(b) or QW-462.4(c).
