ATHENS, Ga. – August 27, 2019- The University of Georgia’s School of Public and
International Affairs was delighted to host Amanda Maddox as a Visiting Practitioner for
the Public Affairs Professional Certificate students. As the current Communications
Director for U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, Maddox had no shortage of wisdom to about
professional life in Washington D.C. She shared her experiences on Capitol Hill and
answered students’ questions about how to prepare for legislative careers.

Once a recent UGA graduate working in the U.S. House, Maddox is now running a
Press Office for a prominent Georgia legislator. Students were able to learn not only
what a political career in communications looks like, but also what the path from Intern
to Director looks like. In addition to her many speaking engagements on campus, she is
highly supportive of UGA students interning in Washington D.C. through the
Washington Semester Program.

“Amanda Maddox is an absolute superstar,” said Dr. Audrey Haynes, Director of the
Applied Politics Certificate Program. “She has always been so generous and supportive
of the program and we’re always excited to have her back on campus to inspire our
students.”

Dr. Haynes presented Maddox with the first-ever Applied Politics Appreciation Award for
her dedication to the program’s students over the past four years.

The Public Affairs Professional Certificate is available to UGA in two tracks, Applied
Politics, and Public Affairs Communication. The program is a joint effort between the
Grady College of Media and Journalism and the School of Public and International
Affairs which seeks to prepare students for careers in public affairs.
