Introduction

The idea of first hand contacts with the real things of life is not
new in education. An educational trip is a visit to a certain place by
students with a teacher for the purpose of firsthand observation and
enhancement of their creative thinking and learning skills; it is also
recognized as an important moment in studying, it is a shared social
experience that provides the opportunity for students to encounter
and explore novel things in an authentic setting. This kind of trip also
helps the student to build independence and confidence as they
explore new places and locals. The excursion or field trip, while only
one of many ways of introducing reality and objectivity to the
students. Several studies show that such trips can have positive
impacts on learning facts and concepts.

If the purposes of the school are to teach pupils to do even better

the desirable things that they will do anyway and to reveal higher
activities, at the same time making them desired and to a degree
possible, then the excursion becomes important. By it the school is
able to acquaint pupils with the various museums, memorials,
industries, and natural phenomena of a community, thus making
them intelligent concerning their environment and widening their
interests. As shown in a survey, students nowadays would like to go to
amusement parks rather than zoos or museums because amusement
parks are more exciting and fun, but here’s the thing. Going to
amusements parks would be really fun but do know that it is still an
educational trip. Going to museums would be highly appreciated
rather than just having the time for leisure.

One study have been made that when students go out for an
educational trip it helps them to gain more science and history
literacy, visiting informal education settings like museums and zoos.
The research was an attempt to determine what influences a
student could absorb when she is joined to an educational trip.
Impacts of an educational trip is the topic being talked about in the
studies, a lot of people said that real world learning is one of it, each
experience that a student participates in, contributes to their
understanding of the world. It is still different when students just go to
school for exploration, they still don’t see the “real world” in there;
they only begin to see the world within.

The purpose of this study is to know what the impacts of field trips to
gr.9 students are. Another reason why we conducted this study is
that we have to know the difference between male and female
students performance when taught using the method of field
trip/excursion. Also this study aims to know what the difference is
between the students’ performance using expository and when
taught using the method of field trips/excursion

Research Questions:

1. What is the difference between the students’ performance

when going on a museum, historical places, or agricultural field
trips?
2. What learning experiences do different types of field trips
expose to students?
3. What is the difference between the students’ performance
when taught using excursion method?

Review of Related Literature

Educational field trip is a progressive method learning by which the

student goes through the necessary learning experiences under the
leadership and guidance of the teacher. One reason teachers
encourage students to join an education field trip is for them to
widen their knowledge, creative thinking and learning skills. Informal
learning setting like educational field trips is one of the effective
ways to learn something.
As said in a 2007 survey, students feels more at ease when they are in
an informal setting because it makes them more focused and it also
gets their attention. Educational field trips also help students in
enhancing their experiential learning’s wherein it gives them the
opportunity to explore, touch, listen and move things. Learning
consists of grasping experience and using it in our everyday lives.
Field Trips can be done in a few hours or take a few days depending
on the schools program.

In another 2007 survey, teachers said that field trips are useful tools in
education providing a more vast exploration of students’ knowledge
while learning outside the four walls of a classroom. The idea behind
this survey is to contextualize knowledge in order to develop a
deeper understanding about the effects of an educational trip to a
student. Educational Field trips has also an impact on students where
they will enhance their creative thinking, help them widen their
science knowledge and enhance their art skill. Teachers believe that
these trips provide cognitive, social or affective value tended to
offer more class/field visits. In addition, science teachers who relied
heavily on textbooks for teaching seemed to have less effective
strategies for field trips.

However, it’s important to relate the field trip to the things the
students are learning so that students do not see that simply as a
break to stay away from learning for the meantime. Teachers really
put effort and time into planning field trips for the students, in order
to make their experience as meaningful as possible.

A research in 2005, simply said that a lot of skills can be developed in

a person’s mental and physical ability. Almost half of the participants
said that only educational field trip is a way for them to know
themselves more aside from socializing in their schools. The survey
was simply to know if field trips are really helpful for a person, not by
only seeing it as a time for fun but also as a time for studying. Similar
to this was a research done by a group of teachers in 2009, for them
to know if students learn something in their field trips, 87% of the
schools population said that it really helps them to be more
educated by simply discovering more about their surroundings when
they go to museums and planetariums. It was then proved by the
teachers by giving them a questionnaire to answer before and after
their field trip wherein almost all of the students failed to pass before
the excursion and then suddenly, 94% of them passed after the
excursion.

Methodology

The research method that the researchers used was random

sampling, wherein they listed down the all possible class numbers of
those who will answer the survey. The design of the said sampling
method which the researchers use was a quantitative in nature. The
researchers distributed 10 survey forms to the president of the class
for each of the four sections in grade 9.

Fig.6 OPINION OF GRADE 9 STUDENTS IN HAVING EDUCATIONAL TRIPS NECESSARY IN THEIR LIFE

Most of the grade 9 students think that educational field trips are
really necessary in their life. 9 students from three sections and 8 from
one section said that it is necessary, but 1 student from the three
sections and 2 students from one section said that it isn’t necessary.

CONCLUSION

The researchers therefore conclude that based on data gatherings

there are three major impacts of educational excursions: increases
interest of the students about the place, improves students’ socio-
economic growth and academic growth and lastly increase the
knowledge about the history of places. Based on the survey forms
that the researchers have tallied most of the students have voted
that the major impact of the excursion is that it can increase their
interest about the place. It just means that they want to learn more
about the place not just some random facts about it, they want to
learn more about the place like the history of that place and others.
Students want to learn not only in school but also in the outside
world.
RECOMENDATION

The researchers recommend future researchers to:

 gather up more information on educational field trips

 have time management skills in doing the research
 have good and easy to understand research questions
 handout better survey questions which will answer the research
questions appropriately
