Concept of Development and its relation with learning
Development is a process of internal and external growth of a child and
the emergence or differentiation of his capabilities. It could also be
understood as the function of maturity and his interaction with the
environment.
Various Aspects of Development:

1. Physical aspect: - Physical growth and development refer to the
psychomotor changes of an individual. It is basically related to the growth
of a child's height, weight and physique. The rate of growth is different in
every individual depending upon his/her age group. Children belonging to
elementary group (6-9yrs) tend to grow at a slow pace. On the other
hand, upper primary students are, on average healthier than those
younger to them. Their resistance to fatigue and disease is also more.
Now, when we talk about secondary and senior secondary school
children, their adolescence period of development begins with puberty. In
early stage changes take place at a rapid pace, in the middle stage, it is
more stable in terms of behavioral patterns and later one is marked by the
preparations of responsibilities and choices which they make in their
careers etc.
2. Mental or Cognitive development: - The meaning of cognition is to
know, perceive or to comprehend. Hence, it would mean the
development of capability of knowing and understanding things over
time, again in interaction with an environment. Cognition also involves the
ability to construct mental images based on one’s own imaginations and
reasoning. These mental images are also constructed by an individual
after examining the surroundings around him/her. Thus, every individual
has a unique model of his imagination based on his understanding of the
unique process of observation. This is how a learner tries to learn about
the world around him.
3. Emotional: - All emotions play an important role in making
adjustments in an individual's life. One of them is the emotional aspect.
The ability to respond emotionally is present even in a new born
infant. There are different types of emotions which are demonstrated by
an individual at different stages of his life.Joy, anger, fear, anxiety,
jealousy, happiness, envy and curiosity are some of them. From the stage
of infancy to maturity, adolescence is one such stage in which emotions
could be seen at its peak. Many adolescents are continually constructing
or reacting to an imaginary audience. They also spend hours before the
mirror imagining how they look in the eyes of others. They generally live
in a world of fantasy away from reality bites.
4, Language development: - The word communication came into being
immediately after the coming up of human race. As we all know that
language is the only mode that which differentiates humans from all other
living beings. Hence, we can say that language acts a channel for
communicating with various individuals and expressing our ideas and
concepts as well as moods, feelings, and thoughts. With the passage of
time there have been many advancements in technologies and so in
communication methods too. It is the code we all use to express
ourselves and communicate to others. It is a communication by word of
mouth. It is the mental faculty or power of vocal communication. It is a
system for communicating ideas and feelings using sounds, gestures,
signs or marks. Language, so far as we know, is something specific to
humans, that is to say, it is the basic capacity that distinguishes humans
from all other living beings. Language, therefore, remains potentially a
communicative medium capable of expressing ideas and concepts as well
as moods, feelings, and attitudes.
5. Ethical or Moral development: - It basically refers to the development
and attaining knowledge of moral values and human ethics. With
scientific development, faith in God is vanishing. In past people were
afraid of doing crime due to fear of Almighty, because it was thought that
He will punish for our sins. Do not consider that anybody who has
committed a crime, is criminal. We must understand that knowingly or
unknowingly, we all commit the crime once a while for certain gain or
pleasure. A child can only act morally until unless he has attained a
certain level of maturity or cognition. Moreover, in today’s time, there is a
great need of self-exploration in order to know about one’s self and a
need of value education both at professional as well as personal level.
Development in Relation to Learning:
As we have already stated that development is actually a process which
starts at the time of birth of an individual and continues until the end. A
child or organism, is surrounded by some or the other kind of
environment whether it’s his surroundings, peers, family or work place
and his actions are also motivated by this external factor. All such action-
reaction behaviour involves changes in an individual and this kind of
changes are termed as ‘learning’. Learning is a continuous process and an
individual keeps on learning different things at different stages of life. The
changes which occur within an individual could be intentionally or
unknowingly. The main area of learning and development together
comprises of skills, knowledge, and experiences suitable for children as
they grow, learn and develop. The main areas in which they need to excel
are communication and literacy, understanding of the word facts, creative
development, personal, social, emotional and physical development along
with problem-solving ability. Hence, we can say that learning and
development both go together hand in hand and takes place
simultaneously.
