8 Theoretical Framework
The researcher finds that the problem of students of SMP 1 Menui is lack of

vocabulary. Vocabulary is additional words for helping the students to be able to improve

their English skill. It means that, without vocabulary students would not be able to do

anyhing in their English skill.

Vocabulary is one of the components in language learning that must be mastered. Without

vocabulary mastery, English as a foreign language (EFL learners) cannot achieve the four

macro skills in English, such as listening, reading, writing and speaking. If they cannot achieve

the macro skills, it means that they cannot achieve the language proficiency.

Based on the theories explained previously and the background of the research is

constructed on the description of the difficulties to understand English vocabulary mastery.

This theoretical framework is aimed at focus this research on the problem concerned. To give

more obvious explanation, look at chart

Most of the students have lack of vocabulary among others, sometimes feel bored

when learning English with a book and just listen to the teacher’s explanation, so the teacher

should teach English with media. Then, there are four types of vocabulary listening

vocabulary, speaking vocabulary, reading vocabulary, and writing vocabulary, so in four

types of vocabulary they get a new vocabulary with four ways to improve in their daily

activities. Next, to improve four types of vocabulary are using part of speech nouns and

adjectives in constructing a phrase. After that, pictures is a tool or media to identify the

students’ vocabulary. Furthermore, pictures use to teaching vocabulary to the eighth grade

students.

The students that are taught by using pictures which are expected to increase their

vocabulary, because the pictures are easier to understand and also easier to explain. The
researcher assumes that using pictures as media is able to change an abstract knowledge to be

concrete which can increase students’ vocabulary mastery. Hopefully, by using picture, the

students’ result in English course will increase, and the goal of teaching learning activity will

be achieved.
