2-telegraph office workplace of F. ariza / house of Fermina(casts- aunt escolASTICA, F. ariza, Fermina)
Narrator- The letter he wrote was handed to Fermina successfully after he saw her at the church. Fermina accepts the letter
secretly not to be seen by her father.(pause 5 secs.))They successfully exchange letters through the help of her aunt
Escolástica.One day, a woman arrived in florentino’s workplace as he is a telegraph worker.OPEN CURTAIN
Florentino- Yes?
Aunt escltca- Oh, how much is it
to send a telegram to the village
of Piedras de Moler?
Florentino- Piedras de Moler?Uh-huh.Uh... let me see.It's...
it's not on our list.
Aunt Escltca- you don't send telegrams to Piedras de Moler?
Florentino-no
Aunt Escltca- Th…then….good day to you.
Florentino- Senorita!(saw a letter left on the table then read it PLAY MUSIC)
Florentina-"Dear Florentino Ariza... I am sorry that I have made you wait so long
for my reply.I ask your forgiveness.
Please, write to me
again soon."
Florentino- "Crowned goddess, I enclose
what I know is
a worthless memento.I also write this verse
in honor of my love for you."
Fermina- "I think of you every moment.Now that spring is here, thoughts of you fill me with life. I
will love you forever.
Forever."
Narrator- Even they are far Away from each other they still find ways to connect their love through
telegraph system. (pause) After 2 years absence, Fermina returns by ship (she is now 17 y/o). She now
runs the household and has matured. When she encounters Florentino in a market, she is instantly
disenchanted and erases him from her life, breaking off the engagement. OPEN CURTAIN

Florentino-The Arcade of Scribes is not
a place for a crowned goddess.
Fermina- No. No, please.Forget it.
Florentino- Wh-wh-what do you mean
"forget it"?
Fermina- I just...I just realized this... this moment when I saw you. What is between us...is nothing more than an illusion. It... it clouded my eyes.I'm so sorry.

NARRATOR- because of this sadness, florentino leaves town for an upriver telegraphy station, encounters cholera,
and resolves to return to always be in Fermina's town, losing his virginity aboard ship.

discrete sexual encounters, with the Widow Nazaret—then he begins to write a diary.OPEN CURTAIN

Doctor-Now, it took Paris,
the city of love, to bring about this blessed transformation. we are overjoyed

Narrator- After seeing his only love pregnant and happy. He went to his unlce Don Leo who was the owner of
Loayza's River Company of the Caribbean to beg for a job and was then hired as a clerk.
Uncle- What do you want?
florentino’- A job.
Uncle- I gave you a job...at Villa de Leyva
and you threw it away.
florentino’- It is different now. I want to be
rich like you.
Uncle- I am not rich.I'm a poor man with money.which is not the same thing.
Why do you want to be rich?
florentino’- So that I can be
someone in society, I need... I need to be worthy of a great lady I cannot stop loving.
Uncle- Who is she? Married?
florentino’- Yes, but I'm waiting
for her husband to die.
Uncle-you’re crazy. So you want a job in the River Company of the Caribbean.
Florentino- Yes, yes.
Uncle- Well, are you any good at, um, writing letters?
Florentino- I think so, I...
I... I write poetry, too
I enter a poem every year
in the Poetic Festival.
I have never won, but...
Uncle- So, you have a way

Narrator- Fermina was insulted by florentino’s premature visit and sends him an insulting letter. She struggles with her
feelings and anger over her husband's death, burning his belongings and many luxuries she acquired. She starts to think of
Florentino.OPEN CURTAIN
(FLORENTINO READING THE LETTER)
Fermina- Florentino Ariza,
you are a dreadful,insensitive human being.
How dare you enter my house
on the day my beloved husband died
and utter such monstrous,ridiculous sentiments?You have put me in
a mortal rage,which has caused me
to think about you without wanting to. Do you understand?
I do not want to think about you.
Stay out of my life."
NARRATOR- FLOrentino writes consoling and philosophical letters to Fermina, who is pleased. After a year, he begins
regular visits.CLOSE CURTAIN
Fermina- Some of your letters
were a great comfort.
Florentino- I'm glad to know
you received them.
Fermina- What... what I most
admired about them..was their simplicity. They helped me a great deal
florentino- In what way?
Fermina- They helped me regain some kind
of peace.
Florentino- You cannot
imagine how happy
I am to know that.
Fermina- But I don't agree with
everything you say.We have nothing in common except memories.The young people we
were are banished...that was all
an illusion.
Florentin0-not for me…. Well...I thought this might amuse you.
Fermina-that must be 50 years ago

NARRATOR- Fermina loses her will to live. Her daughter opposes her interest in Florentino and is told to never return to her
house. OPEN CURTAIN She decides to go on a cruise up the Magdalena R and her son is surprised, on seeing her off, to
discover Florentino aboard. As they go up river,he gradually courts her and wins her love. Close CURTAIN They kiss. He learns
that América has killed herself. They make love. They make love. At La Dorada, the final destination upriver, she doesn't want
to be seen by passengers boarding that she knows. The captain, Diego Samaritano, colludes with Florentino and raises the
cholera flag, putting the passengers off. They make tranquil love. On nearing their port of origin, they realize they will be
discovered and she feels returning "will be like dying". Florentino asks the captain to turn the boat upriver again and sail back
and forth "Forever".OPEN CURTAIN
