ABSTRACT

This study will modify the hydrophilic nature of cellulose to be hydrophobic on cellulose
membranes to separate water-oil using polymer polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and
polyvivynil pyrrolidone (PVP) as additive polymers with the immersion precipitation
phase inversion method and gamma irradiation. The mixture of water in oil fuels can
result in pollution which has a considerable effect in the long term. The use of
hydrophobic membranes was chosen as an effective oil / water separation method. The
hydrophobic membrane was synthesized using the precipitation immersion phase
inversion method followed by gamma irradiation with cellulose as a substrate, PVDF as a
low energy modifier, PVP as a membrane additive, and PLA as a coating agent in
improving membrane hydrophobicity. From the research that has been done, the
optimum PVDF concentration is obtained to obtain a membrane with hydrophobicity,
characteristics, and the best separation is 15% PVDF concentration. PVDF 15%
membrane with the best contact angle at 145º has porosity of 88.2%. The hydrolytic
degradation value of 49.93% resulted in a flux value of 1.07 mL /m2. Hour, with a
separation efficiency of 91.64%.
