Metamorphosis: Creative Writing Assignment

Consider: One morning Gregor Samsa wakes up and his world has been turned upside down.
Consider what his life had been like before the metamorphosis…this is very important. Why
would he turn into this type of animal? What characteristics do the two share? Was it really that
big of a change?

Now: This morning, you awaken from a deep slumber. You’ve been dreaming of a freak snow
day in September which tempts you to lie in your bed and luxuriate under your soft covers.
Nestled in your flannel sheets you plan to sip on hot cocoa and read your latest Humanities
reading…Ahhh…lovely.

The alarm goes off and you can clearly see out your window. No snow. Shoot…you must get
up. That’s when you notice that like Gregor, from that freaky book Stephen required you read,
you, too, have metamorphosed.

Tell the tale: What have you turned into? Why would you turn into this? What
characteristics do you and your “new self” share? Is it really that big of a change?

Write about your day from the perspective of this object. Perhaps you transform into the pencil
in your best friend’s backpack…and get tortured all day because he/she had three tests and
rubs your scalp raw (uses his/her eraser) all day. Perhaps you transform into your dog and we
discover what your dog does all day when you are gone.

Make sure your creative, original tale addresses all the questions above in bold. There is no
expected length here…but discuss your thoughts about your transformation…how do you react?
…..how do you handle it? How does your family react. Discuss what happens to you, and what
you do once you are transformed. Discuss how your life changes. Your ending is up to you.
Your tale may also include a (digital arts) illustration.
