The Common Application Personal Essay

American entrepreneur, Walt Disney, once said “All our dreams can come true, if we have
the courage to pursue them.” I (Joshua G Alonzo-Morales) have been trying to obtain my dream
for a considerable amount time. The opportunity to transfer and complete my undergraduate
degree represents the fulfillment of a lifelong goal. I have been through many difficult obstacles
and made sacrifices to achieve them. At the age of sixteen, I became a father. However, that did
not hinder my ability to complete my studies as well maintain a presence in the community. I
graduated as an honors student who worked full-time and led in our “clean up the street”
initiative. After graduating, I wanted to give back to the country by enlisting in the United States
Army. It was a daunting task due to leaving my daughter and postponing my studies. In Fort
Benning, Georgia my peers and I dealt with many complicated tasks. We managed by working
together, trusting on others abilities, and maintaining a professionalism. There were many doubts
by our superiors, oftentimes saying “why do you think you can make it as an infantryman?” I
would respond “it is my ambition to succeed and I have the heart to fight.” Once coming back
from Basic Training, I decided to pursue my goal of obtaining a college degree.
I have a desire to complete the next chapter in my life. I want to pursue a new goal and
that is to transfer into a university. Transferring into a university may be unnerving at first but in
the end it will serve as an instrument. It takes courage to succeed in a university setting.
An individual needs to understand that one needs to contribute. Ultimately achieving a higher
thinking and benefiting my community and country. Currently, I am apart of three organizations:
Department of Environmental clean-up services, United States Honor Guard,
and Princeton’s adolescents and youth program. The knowledge obtained from my studies will
benefit these organizations. I am ready to take the next step and build my future.

Since, I was a child I wanted to help others. I have impacted many lives with my services
and have been honored to meet officals like governor Phil Murphy and Domcratc Cory Booker.
While, stationed at Fort Dix for extensive training I was told to drive some officals around.
