James Shirley was born in London, probably on

September 3, 1596. He was a english poet and


dramatist, one of the leading playwrights in the
decade before the closing of the theatres by
Parliament. Shirley was educated at
the University of Cambridge. His first play, The
School of Complement, was performed in 1625 at
the Phoenix, Drury Lane. He died in 1666
October 29
